Big Canvas Painting Demo: Embracing the Messy Middle 🎨

In this week's video, I continue working on the abstract painting from my previous video. It already has some marks and collage papers on it, and now I am building up layers and integrating mixed media elements using acrylic paint, including fluid and slow-drying open acrylic.
I've well and truly entered the middle zone with this painting, where doubts can surface, and often the painting seems to get worse before it gets better. As I dive deeper into larger-scale painting, I'm learning to embrace this stage and not be in such a rush to find a resolution to my painting. It's okay to let things get messy, and, in fact, I often reach for supplies that help with this, like baby wipes, silicone tools, water spray bottles, rags, brayers, and anything else that I can use to smudge and mess up my marks.
Once the painting has plenty of surface texture and interesting marks, I'll spend time refining and calming areas, but for now, it's all about building it up!
Let me know if you're interested in seeing what happens next. I'm enjoying this relaxed approach to creating RU-vid videos, where I invite you into one of my painting sessions and share what I am up to. There is little planning involved, just unfiltered painting. I hope you enjoy too!
Thank you for your support here on RU-vid ❤️

I really love watching your process, and the choices you make, the marks, drips, colours, covering things up. I love the idea of "risk-taking" - I think it is how we become more of ourselves - daring to do things that may feel a bit uncomfortable, but that really call to us! We are more than we seem, and I believe that painting in this manner that feels a bit wild and free helps us open up to embrace all of our self - and make better art in the process. I am happy to see more of your process and your thoughts while painting! I hope you'll continue to show us the evolution of this painting!

Oh my goodness, Laura! Such an education you just gave me! This particular video truly highlighted just how MUCH I don't allow myself freedom of movement. How loud my inner critic is and how it is in ongoing judgment of just about ANYTHING I have intuitively done or attempted in the past. You made nearly identical marks on your canvas that I have made before, yet, then, just instantly threw the paper away because it made no 'sense' to me! I can see now how restrictive and even constrictive my thinking mind is in direct opposition to my inner need to be free-flowing and for the most part, non-thinking. You gave my mind and actions the language I needed, by simply saying you didn't want to get "ahead' of yourself!! WOW! Thank you ever so much for allowing us to hear your thoughts and the reasons why you did or did not do something. I've definitely watched your videos on a good number of occasions and have always felt great appreciation for all of your work. This is why I have followed you for so long and even taken a class from you. However. For whatever reason, this has been quite an eye-opening adventure for me, today. I can see so clearly, that for the most part, I've never fully allowed myself to go through the uncomfortable, risk-taking stages for my painting project to fully reveal itself. This post may very well sound as though I'm haranguing myself, but I really am not. In truth, now I feel quite excited at the prospect of applying what I just uncovered! I imagine from all I've shared here that it's easy to see what a complete 'newbie' I am. I was born deeply curious and quite adventuresome in most other areas of my life. I will now simply carry those aspects of myself over into this creative realm. How peculiar that today would be THE day for REALLY taking this piece of information in, and fully digesting it. I have no idea how many times I've heard not only you, but numerous other artists say the same things I'm just happy that I finally DID. THANK YOU very, very much, Laura! I love your work. I love your new studio!! All the BEST!!

When i first found your channel i found it intimidating. I have never thought about getting out of my comfort zone like this before. I appreciate your style so much and it’s teaching me how to “freedom paint” it’s so bold and I can’t wait to explore this style a lot more.

I love the term "freedom paint", It captures it perfectly. I am so glad that you are feeling less intimidated! Once you step out of your comfort zone, it's addictive because it is so liberating and teaches us about life just as much as about art.

@LauraHornArt
@LauraHornArt 7 месяцев назад
So happy to hear that, I find the gel prints really get you thinking differently about marks and imagery. And the canvas flipping always opens up possibilities. It would be fun to do a session with timed canvas flips, e.g. paint for 5 mins, flip, paint another 5 mins, flip again. etc. Might try that! ☺

Yes, I definitely would love to see where this painting ends up - the colours are gorgeous and the gelli prints were certainly a great way to start your process. For those wanting a cheaper option than the catalyst tools you can buy silicon baking spatulas. They work very well and you can snip bits out of the ends in grooves for various effects.
