My friends wife taught full time for decades - eventually similar thing happened, they got wealthy enough she didn't have to work full time anymore - so she just did substituting because she still enjoyed teaching - the problem then became she was substituting all the time to the point it was nearly full time anyway - at that point she quit.

It’s a complicated problem. The politicians from both parties are ruining education. The kids play on their phones and will cause trouble if you ban them. They can’t read. We teach to “outcomes” tests instead of using a grade for the Outcome. Salaries and morale are low. I retire in 4 years, God willing.🎉

My wife decided to pull the pin in March 2021 and retire. I was very happy to have her at home, I was still working from home, but it was great having her here. In late October she suddenly passed away. She didn’t get much of a retirement. I was numb, I threw in the towel on my job, I ran my own business. The 8 months we had were the best we shared together. It’s a good feeling having the person you love at home with you. I’ve heard some horror stories about couples who go at each other like cats and dogs in a pissing match because they’re not used to being together 24/7. Always be thankful you have someone you love and vice versa, because that person could be gone without warning faster than you can blink your eyes. It was great while it lasted, zero regrets.

Best class I ever had in college was called "pre-teaching". Before I started taking teaching classes they said at the end of our college year, go back to our home town and sit in on a class for a week at the level we thought that we wanted to teach at. So I arranged to sit in on a high school class for a week as an observer. Middle of the first morning I was sitting there and realized "my God, what was I thinking!" indeed, funny thing is since the first I saw her, working on their fixer up yacht years ago; I knew she had to have been a teacher. And not just that, but from her ability to explain and kind mannerism; she was highly likely that one teacher the kids at her school universally regarded as their favourite. Some people are just born to teach. It actually made me nostalgic for my childhood as I had a teacher just like that in year 7.

Then they should pay us enough to make it worthwhile. Education budgets have increased, but our salaries have only kept pace with inflation since the 1960s... If you want talented teachers, make it an appealing profession and treat us like professionals who know what we're doing.

Good teachers deserve the utmost respect, and they haven't been given it in a long time.

I’ve owned 26 vehicles over my 47 years of driving. In my opinion most cars and pickup trucks made between ~ 1995 to 2010 hit a nice combination of durability longevity without being larded up with difficult and expensive technology. By now we know which of these modern era cars to avoid. If you have a decent enough car from this modern golden era, I always advise people to just keep repairing them and increase the frequency of maintenance as they age. My current fleet includes a 1998 Continental that has been very reliable now with 178k miles, a 2002 Continental with 156k miles, a 2004 Avalanche with 262k miles, and a 2006 Town Car with 142k miles. Outside of regular oil changes every 2,500 miles, trans service every 25k miles, differential service every 75k miles, I’ve mostly had just a few random repairs for an alternator, water pump, master cylinder etc. I did put a transmission in the Avalanche that I use for trailering, and I learned to avoid the discount transmission shops - because that first replacement trans didn’t last. Then I used a GM CERTA remanufactured trans that has now gone more than 100k miles and works great. New cars and trucks are no longer affordable at $50-$80k. Even if I wanted one, I could never justify those crazy car payments.

I drove two 2005 Buick lacrosses until the wheels fell off, 3.8L engine, bulletproof. Both were 220,000+ miles, original engine, altenator, radiator, and trans. Car still ran when I traded it in on a brand new 2018 Chrysler 300. That chrysler has 120,000 miles and has been perfect as well.

You got lucky, really lucky. The 3800 series II from 1995 through the 2005 model year typically burned through intake manifolds every 60,000 miles or so. Unlike the 3100/3400/4300 series it wasn't just the gasket that failed, but the entire upper intake plenum. GM thought it was a good idea to run a piping hot metal EGR tube through the plastic manifold. Failure was guaranteed from the factory. If not caught and repaired quickly enough the coolant the failure dumped into the engine oil would quickly destroy the engine. Often the failure was rapid and there would be no sign of an issue until the engine seized.

I'm if the opinion that the period from the early 90s though to around 2010 was the pinnacle of consumer car design. At this stage there was still an intention from manufacturers to make cars that people could actually enjoy for many years while remaining efficient, reliable and comfortable.

I have a 2008 Buick Lucerne; mine is the CX, where the one in the video is CXL (more luxurious, nicer seats and radio, etc.). Mine is even a pearl white like this one. Mine is going into the shop for a power steering leak, had a new radiator put in. Yeah, it's pricey but the ride is sooooo nice........ This looks a lot like mine; glad to know it's worth it to keep it running.

the LZ9 motor that came with those is actually a really cool motor, came from the GM "High-Value" engine lineup, along with the 3.5L (same block smaller bore). both of these are similar to the 2.8 and the like, as wizard said, but with the bore offset a bit to fit the larger hole. Best thing about these motors is the low end torque, worst thing is the displacement on demand after '07. 100% worth fixing.

Not sure on DOD on the Buick in the video. BUT 2007-2008 Impalas with 3900 had DOD. 2006 did not, and they dropped DOD in 2009 on the Impalas. 3900 was a TERRIFIC engine with the exception of oil leaks. They leak oil from everywhere. The one in the video is pretty dry, with the exception of oil running down the starter. 4t65e was also not the greatest transmission.

@@mph5896 yeah tbh I can't name a good fwd transmission from GM, AFAIK they don't exist. I regret trading in my perfectly functioning 2014 Mazda. The only thing that was a pain was changing the low beam headlight bulb (done blind from the bottom although the web suggested taking the front bumper case off). The only other repair were all the brake lines which succumbed to rust although the rest of the car looked rust free. Never used a drop of oil. Hamtramack made good cars.

I've been impressed with the power of every vehicle I've driven with the 3.4L. They're torquey little buggers. Despite the long gearing of the era's 4-speed autos, they pulled strong.. at least compared to Japanese cars at the time. Frankly, if people insist that Subarus are reliable despite their unrivaled head gasket failure rate, why should the 3.4L be dismissed for a similar tendency?
@nukedathlonman
@nukedathlonman Год назад
@@omgcool7206 I never had gasket problems - though my 3.1's where pre-dexcool (leading suspect of cause), and I do think GM solved those problems (but when I can't pin down). Even the 3.1 was quite torquey in the right car (clutch engaged and rolling at 1500rpm in 2nd gear (Getrag/Issisu manual trans), then just smash the peddle to the floor for an instant gut wrench and smoke show - yes I was quite brutal on my cars in my late teens/early 20's - learned the hard way that gets stupidly expensive on maint costs).
@good4jg
@good4jg Год назад
@@nukedathlonman I have two FWD 3.1 liter Malibus - a 2001 which only had the lower intake manifold gasket failure, and a 2000 I bought from a co-worker's dad 4 years ago for $250 that also had bad head gaskets. I previously had two previous-generation 3.1 liters (in a 1994 Lumina and 1994 Sunbird) that only need valve cover gaskets. EVERY GM car I've owned has had DexCool except my 1986 Cavalier. The issue with the 3100 ("M" and "J" code) and 3400 engines is that the lower intake gasket material on the earlier generations was changed to plastic (with rubber molded in for port sealing. The plastic would crack, the rubber would shift, and coolant or oil would either leak from the outside OR coolant would leak into the oil. If the latter happened, it would usually occur suddenly and QUICKLY fill the crankcase with coolant. You can imagine how the engine could overheat and destroy the head gaskets if the engine wasn't shut down. Fel-Pro eventually made a lower intake manifold gasket set that was constructed with aluminum, but the first set I installed was before then lasted about the same 70K miles as the first set. That car currently has 260K miles on it. I've done gasket replacement on several cars with every variation of the leak (as described above), and Fel-Pro's "problem solver" product is the real deal. I've been hard on cars my whole life, and I've discovered abuse is FAR better than neglect and inattention. You're right about abuse causing problems though - my Sunbird had the manual tranny (BTW, V6s were only mated to the Muncie-Getrag 282/New Venture Gear T550, while the I4s used the Isuzu) and I made a "money shift" that sent the engine to 8300 RPM. The engine only lasted about 140K miles, while the Lumina's was still pulling when we gave it away with 300K miles on it after buying the 2001 Malibu.
@nukedathlonman

@@good4jg Yea, my Cav (93) def did not have Dexcool in it and was not indicated for use of dexcool like on my later cars. But that car eventually popped a lifter, wrecked a rocker and push rod, then finally blew the head gaskets. It was a Gen II. Depending on application, not all 3.1's where 3100's in '93/94 (this is tail end of the splayed valved Gen II engines) - there was some changes to signify the Gen III 3100 series (new intake with sequential efi, roller rockers, stiffened block, Dexcool, and some other things I can't recall right now).
