Cool thing about Fox Squirrels they aren't skittish like regular squirrels. Came across one while out in the woods one day, he was laying stretched out on a tree branch with his legs draped over the side just chilling out. He was only about 15' feet up and never mover or flinched the closer I got, I got right up under him and he just looked down checking me out as I was checking him out. He as like "yeah and what do you want, can't you see I'm chilling?"
Aren't they cute. I have several in my yard I video. They are called Big Cypress Fox Squirrels & Sherman's Fox Squirrel. This one is a Sherman's. Which are more black. The Big Cypress is lighter the only difference is the color of coat. Mine hand feed too :) I am a bit squirrel crazy.. the one I see most I call Dinky. They get about 3 lbs.
The ones on my golf course are totally black. And they are huge! They walk around like they own the place and will not move even if a ball almost hits them.
Striking markings on that friendly little guy. I love his tail. I have an all black one visiting my yard lately so now I'm learning about fox squirrel color variants.
Finally, after watching this video I am certain that the small squirrel like mammals I’ve been seeing on our golf course nearly every late afternoon/early evening are these. Are they protected? A developer is trying to purchase the golf course and build homes on it. If they are protected, proving they live here can only help us put a stop to the development. I love to watch them. They seem like such smart little animals. They’re always stopping and looking around on their hind legs. They remind me of prairie dogs or something the way they stand up and scan everything.
Sherman's Fox Squirrel, because of the black head with white muzzle. I don't think that the Big Cypress Fox Squirrel has the head combination like this one.
We have a few of these at Timber Pines Golf Club in Spring Hill, Florida. Only around this golf course. I've never seen one anywhere else in our county.
