Navy News, Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia (July 27, 2020): 784 feet long USS Hershel "Woody" Williams (ESB 4) departs port-Williams is conducting its inaugural deployment following its commissioning in March.
Based on the Alaska-class oil tanker, Expeditionary Sea Base vessels posses a very significant 52,000 square-foot flight deck capable of hosting an array of aircraft. The vessels are immensely flexible in capability, providing equipment storage, repair spaces, and accommodation. As well as supporting grand scale logistical operations and equipment transfers-these unique ships can essentially function as a floating port at sea when conventional ports are unavailable or inaccessible.

I love this channel!! Before I started watching videos here, I knew little re US Military equipment, assets, etc. This shipcis incredible...reminiscent of something I'd see in the movie, WaterWorld! LOL You cannot beat American ingenuity!! God bless the fine young men and women who, at great personal sacrifice, protect and defend America every day!!

This looks like the USNS ESB-3 Lewis B Puller Expeditionary Sea Base vessel. This ship is like a floating dock that can be used in place of port facilities. In WW2 the Allies did not have port facilities to bring supplies ashore for the invasion of Europe so they built the two Mulberry artificial ports. This is a ship that serves same purpose. Ship or helicopters can bring supplies to this vessel, offload and then it can be transferred to another vessel to take equipment ashore. The big platform on top is a landing pad for helicopters. I think the ship can flood tanks to lower itself in water til the area under the top platform becomes like a open well deck.

Looks as though someone with a bit of sense took the Floater 1 concept of an offshore sea base and ran with it, the original idea was a multi barge assembly that had to be towed to its operational area, but they've gone for an adapted bulk carrier instead. The original concept allowed for amphibious vehicles to be able to drive on/off the base and for it too be able to accept hovercraft (LCAC and Attack).
