I had a client that was very adamant about their side gate not weathering. I used Trex Composite Wood to make sure its stays perfect and new.

Great video, thanks for sharing. Didn't realize Trex made this thinner facia board - Great option! On our 4' wide gates I think I will Liquid Nails the backside stiffener bars to eliminate the screws showing on the front, especially because we want to run the 'wood' horizontally. Thx again

Jimbo great job! I got one tip for you, prior to installing all the countersunk screws take a piece of cardboard and stick all the screws in it tightly together in some formation next to each other and then paint all the heads at once. it's easier and screwing them in won't damage the paint...

The only thing I would’ve done different was put those boards on in through the tablesaw and rabbet offsetting edges so they could you create your own overlap. I noticed once they were hung you could see the light through the cracks of the doors. I just love your educational videos

Oooh, that would have been nice. A serious bump in the labor costs, but very nice. I'll keep that idea in mind in case I ever end up owning a Californian villa with a double-wide driveway. lol

That is a good idea. I think it would be faster though to just use a router to cut out the overlap

Great video and beautiful work! Only thing I would have done differently is weld the hinges the opposite of one another so you can’t just lift the gate off the hinges, I used to build dump bodies for a truck equipment company and we also used the same hinges. Always welded the hinges on facing the opposite direction of each other. Of course you would have to weld it up on site which makes things more difficult but it is added security.
@OverTheTopFabrication
@OverTheTopFabrication Год назад
This is true, but you can also bolt a tab above the top hinge to prevent this. That way you can remove the tab and remove the gate if needed
@GenomulUman
@GenomulUman Год назад
Also, you can just lift those 2 drop pins from below and have yourself a wide-open gate.

Got me using those hinges too, here in Ireland they are called cigar hinges and I use the ones with the grease nipples so I can just use a grease gun afterwards.
@NoRoads2AllRoads

Hey @Jimbo's Garage ... regarding those screws on the front, if you have used maybe just a smaller head screw, and instead of sinking them flush, let it bite into the Trex material a little more - their decking screws would work great btw ... then instead of paint, you just run a heat gun on top of them and the hole closes up!

Looks good. I would suggest using a flap sanding disk with the plastic backer to grind out the welds when you are finishing the “finish” sides of your work. You can see the impressions on this gate from using the t27. Even when it’s hanged. You’d be surprised how much easier it is using a flat disk and gives a seamless finish. Great work Jimbo, love your shop and channel.

Nice attention to detail, you’re a real craftsman! I work with metal for a living myself. I’ve never watched one of your videos before. I don’t know if you have one, but I recently bought a Milwaukee metal circular saw. Works great for cutting those angles in the square tubing or cutting a long sheet. It’s fast and leaves a cool to the touch edge, don’t know how I lived without one. Also, I found for outdoor projects like your gate, that using a gloss black chassis car paint (like Eastwood) in a sprayer holds up extremely well. Saw palm trees in your video, I live in the snow and salt what up north so you probably don’t encounter the problems I do. Just thought I’d pass it along. Take care.

If you want to improve your accuracy with a cutting wheel, score a line on your sharpie mark before cutting through. If you use a little smaller grinder, you could use an anchor hand like you do with welding, that may increase grinder accuracy. Another beautiful project. Thanks!

Hi Nice, However, I do a little diffrent, I dont weld after, or drill after. What I do is have a top bar, say 40mm x 8mm, middle bar, and bottom bar. Predrill the bars all along with a 1mm drill-bit, to go thought the middle of the boards, thus if the boards were 160mm wide, first hole 80mm, second, 240mm, third, 400mm, and so on at every 160mm. Then put a 10mm silver or brass dome bolt though. Wayne

Instead of face-screwing through the Trex, you could also have welded another piece of pre-drilled angle or flat bar to the side of the tubes. Then you could fastened through the flange on the crossbar into the backside of the Trex. This would probably work better with some 3/4" lumber though. I'm not sure of the 1/2"+/- thickness composite wood's ability to hold a faster, and the self tapping screws you used would be most secure. Edit: New to the channel and I see you did that same method in another video, of course I assumed there was a reason you did what you did. Happy to find the channel, these are great build videos for practical fabrication jobs.

Good call to add the screws in the middle area, I made a gate for a friend and he insisted not to add screw in the middle area. It was a mistake, in time the heat of the sun warps that composite planks. Looks like crap now.

I use those hilti screws almost on a daily basis, and I can tell you on this application, they won't last. There's a lot of counterlever, moving weight. Best would be threaded rod in epoxy and locking nut. It can be installed on the back wall of the tubing so it won't be in the way. Other than that, looks great!
