While fishing I spotted a huge shark - much longer than my waverunner but dont have a clue what it was??? Sorry for the bad language but the average yorkshire man doesnt come across a shark everyday! especially one this big!
To me and my knowledge of sharks it's a Basking Shark. If you look at it's behaviour it's not really interested in you, it swims away but not in any hurry. I put this down to being because they're filter feeders and have no real reason to bump/mouth larger objects (such as a jetski) because they won't eat it. Most of the footage and info I've seen about Great Whites suggest they are inquisitive and like to know what large objects in their vicinity are, which they test through bumping, sight and mouthing. This would be especially true for a GW in unknown waters such as those off Pembrokeshire. Either way probably one of those moments you'll never forget. Great video pal! From the spacing of dorsal to tail fin , I'd estimate that it was a Basking shark. Huge , but harmless and in warmer weather they're in abundance off the western seaboard of the U.K.
As a recently qualified keyboard marine biologist ,I can allay everybody's fears ,this is not a great white shark ! but quite clearly and without doubt ,a near record ten spined stickleback!!!.
There are a few reasons why I'm convinced that the footage shows a basking shark. Firstly, the footage is apparently from the UK coastline and it's a known fact that basking sharks are to be found in these waters. Secondly, the sedate manner of its swimming at the surface is characteristic of basking sharks as they are filter feeders and spend most of their time at the surface, hence it's name: basking shark (admittedly, however, other sharks - including great whites - can swim slowly at the surface, too). Thirdly, there is a brief point around 1:18 into the footage when you can observe a larger section of its caudal fin and the subterminal notch (i.e. the 'extra' flap near the top of the tail) it's that of a basking shark. The great white shark's subterminal notch isn't as pronounced as that of the basking shark. With regards to great white sharks, the nearest verified sighting of one to UK waters was off the coast of La Rochelle, France, in 1977. That's approximately 400 miles south of South Wales.
@@mrianwonder6527could also be a shortfin mako or porbeagle, the later have been filmed as far in as right beside the rocks in Pembrokeshire before where there was line fishing going on. Also the fact the man in this video was fishing suggests to me that could be why the shark was attracted to the area in the first place. Personally I would never rule out the possibility of great whites in Pembrokeshire, the area has several seal colonies and I have heard first hand from marine life tour operators who have seen large predatory sharks that were definitely not basking sharks in Pembrokeshire waters, and these people see enough basking sharks to tell the difference.
I'm a marine narco biologist and I've been living in my submarine since 1985 and I've dealt drugs to all kinds of sharks... Even Pablo Escobars sharks! And I'm telling you it was a real great white!

They were not basking sharks, one of them showed some sharp aggressive turns in the water like it was hunting, basking sharks dont move like that. "Im fucking off!" Hahahaha great vid
There was only one shark in the video, what you can see is the front dorsal fin and the tail. I somewhat agree with you when you say about the sharp aggressive turn that it made. Cheers for comment!
Mate, after much consideration I, a legitimate Marine Biologist, have decided that the shark you encountered was, without any hesitation, a Megalodon. Which means, you are very, very lucky to be alive. Hope this clarification has cleared everyone's doubts! Peace out

Saw it too, looked like it might be a seal head, which would explain the white/porbeagle - I'm tempted to say it was a porbeagle but a bloody big one, we've had a few down here in Dorset. That isnt a basking shark though, no way, too much of a rigid tail and dorsal when on the surface

I'm not a biologist but I do have a serious interest in zoology. The main reason I am sure White sharks are present in the Channel at least is that a man who I respect and trust implicitly told me he saw one very clearly and very closely. He is a pilot and also sails his yacht out of Salcombe in South Devon. He saw the shark on one of his trips about 2 miles off the coast at a,place called the Skerries Bank off Dartmouth. He was,able to be certain as the shark was in calm clear water at a depth of about 2 feet and crucially he had, the year before been in a cage in the water off the coast of South Africa watching them first hand. Anecdotal of course but an extremely reliable source in my opinion. Cheers guys.
RL: Which means your buddy almost certainly saw a Porbeagle. Build-wise it is like a 'miniature' great white, cylindrical, stocky, large dark eyes, similar body colouration (although 'colour' is hard to determine through water distortion). It's also a species known to frequent UK waters. It's a great tale, but unlikely to be Carcharodon Carcharius.
Noo, Porgies are common as muck in our waters in Cornwall and between us my mate and I must have caught 30 or 40 of them. No, certainly not mistaken in that regard.
I wouldnt be so sure we don't have Great Whites in UK waters.There have been a number of significant sightings over the last few years,some very close to shore.While these sightings couldve been misidentified and are Porbeagles. As the Porbeagle and the Great White share alot of the same characteristics for survival and are closely related in specie, it is not to hard to believe that there are Great Whites in our waters. As the saying goes " There is no history of anything, until its happened"
Definitely a great white and the reason I can say this without fear of contradiction is I actually caught one the very same on lake Windermere whilst on a school trip
Great vid thanks for sharing ar kid... looks like a big Thresher with that elongated tail visible as he legged it before you ran him over with your sea 'hog'. Plenty of sharks and other unusual marine life to be seen around the Pembs coast as they take a short cut up through the Irish sea to the North. You were lucky to catch that on camera... top vid... well done!
whites all have a tail similar to a basking shark. there is absolutely nobody on earth who can "guarantee" the species of that shark just by seeing that video of its fins.
Without any doubt, a Basking Shark. Mouth wide open with it’s dorsal fin and tail occasionally breaking out of the water. It’s tail and rear body moving from side to side as it swims slowly forward filtering plankton from the water with it’s gills.

100% a basking shark. The way it moves and its size and fins. At that size it could only be a basking shark, white shark or large mako or porbeagle but nether of those sharks move like that. You can see lots of basking sharks off the Cornish coast with binoculars and if you are lucky they often come in very close to some popular beaches. It is very likely that white sharks visit our waters but it's no cause for concern as even in places where they are abundant they are rarely seen or come into contact with people. They are more likely to swim off which is also why this is a basking shark as it wasn't spooked by the jet ski.
Yup it’s a basking shark...I used to work at inshore trawling during early 70’s we d see them quite often in and around sea area “white” off the uk south coast", I recognised it right away!
well firstly a basking shark would certainly be a lot bigger and yes im well aware that it could be juvenile but ive never seen one and secondly basking sharks dont move like that at all, that was a great white no doubt at all and why are people surprised that theyre here? theyve been here a lot longer than we know water temp is fine and there is plenty of its favoured food ie seal and also very little if any orca activity which means no predators to worry about, makes total sense if you ask me

For anyone interested-this specific area is called Mwnt, in Pembrokeshire, Wales. it is my favourite place in the world and has been since I was about 6. Mwnt is known for its dolphin activity which I have always loved watching in the sunset, it is also known for baskin sharks, they are harmless to us and don’t have teeth, they feed off plankton etc. There is a lovely campsite on that hill and a little church and steps down the cliff to that little beach, after lockdown I am going to this campsite for at least a fortnight as I live in England now and miss home, I highly recommend visiting!

A few of the lads round at lydstep told me same thing but I would have expected a basking shark to have been much bigger, who know? lol I'll be back in july for another look though.
I'm a shark amateur investigator, this is 100% a basking shark, you can tell by the barbed tail at 1:19 if you compare the tail to other basking shark pictures it's the same. A great sight to see in Wales.
Just to make clear that Great Whites are warm blooded and as such the water temperature has no bearing on it`s location. The driver is food supply. I agree that the South and West coasts are most frequently the scene of sightings but I would venture that this is due to the high presence of a major food source, seals. I live in Pembrokeshire and we have instances of seals being washed up having been mortally wounded by unknown creatures. One of these carcasses was sent to an expert in South Africa and he was left in the dark as to where it had been found. He said that without question the injuries were inflicted by a Great White.
Great Whites are NOT warm blooded at all and that explains why you're very unlikely to ever catch sight of one of the even the Southernmost UK coast, it's typical fisherman tales, Great Whites are only partially warm blooded so still prefer a certain sea temperature, maybe in 20-30 yrs as the sea warms it could become a more realistic sighting....

These facts are widely available and its difficult to find somewhere reputable that does not agree that White Sharks are endothermic ie warm blooded. The above info supports my original comment of course.
I did also, I was always told that they were able to warm themselves if needed but they are not classed as warm blooded as they do require relatively warm water the vast majority of the time....seriously that's what I learnt and studied along with always that fact? I stand corrected though if you know different....thanks anyway...
I stand by my previous comment unless you can prove different though? They are only partially warm blooded (endothermic) so technically NOT able to swim in everywhere, I still think these waters may be still too cold for most white sharks? No?
that by the looks of things is a basking shark... u can tell by the dorsal fin...its rounded at the top..but great whites do come to our shores........im pretty sure !!
It's almost certainly a basking Shark, the waters off the a Welsh coast from South West to North are one of the best places in the world to see them, it's quite a commonly known fact too? But being from Yorkshire maybe you wouldn't know, there are loads of clips on RU-vid just the same actually...
All I could see were the tips of the dorsal fin and tail, but their shape didn't look like those of a basking shark. Also, aren't basking sharks a hell of a lot bigger than that? I'm not saying this was or wasn't a white shark.
Wouldn’t dream of it!! I’ve removed lots of discarded fishing nets and lines from the ocean with the help of that jet ski though but unfortunately there are nearly always dead fish that got caught up in them☹️ Jet skis have quite a bad reputation and rightly so! I’ve witnessed first hand some of the stupid things people do on them, but trust me not all of them are bad.

See no one would believe me ,but here we have a genuine Wild Nessie, that has been kept in secret by the Scottish to restock Loch Ness until it escaped . And to prove it we also have a picture that was taken after a day out, by the workers of a certain whisky distillery of their annual product tasting event............🦈........( it is a little larger bit bigger than this but little Lofty Stewart was slightly inebriated ,and had the camera the wrong way around at the time)
there is nothing stopping a great white from coming into uk waters, there are lots of seals and prefer cold water, however this is likely a basking shark, feeding, still a great experience.
Why do you use a rod when fishing out at sea?? as you can just use a line as casting is not required like casting off a beach. Also rods in a boat especially a little jet ski would be clumsy and difficult to use especially when retrieving fish from the lure.
Michael Macluskie my ski is huge it’s more like a small boat, and I have it setup to carry everything handsfree, don’t think you can see it in this video but there’s others where you can.
yeah I’d agree with that, there’s loads of sea life in the area, regularly see seals and dolphins but that was my first and only great white/basking shark sighting 👍🏻😂
Most likely Basking Shark in this case, dorsal fin does seem triangular in shape, although on the small side. Reality is it could be any number of shark species, very difficult to from grainy vids of the fins alone. Personally I'm convinced Great whites are here in summer months at least and believe the reason they've never been confirmed is due to the assumption every large shark sighted is a basking shark, even when those people were not there to confirm this and sightings occurred in areas known for seals and other marine life that great whites predate on. I'm confident great whites will be confirmed in UK waters at some point in the near future and I'm tempted to go out and probe it myself. I'm more afraid of diving in Pembrokeshire than I ever was in the med where whites have already been and confirmed. I have seen greater diversity of marine life in UK and have encountered other shark species within metres of the shoreline whereas I have always found the med to be largely baron of marine life due to over fishing & never had a single sighting of any type of shark in either hundreds of dives or while working as a boat tour guide out there. The water temps are also very comparable and sometimes even warmer in UK during summer months than those in the med, which is a lot chillier by the way than people think. We know the Med has White Sharks but we believe the UK does not? Honestly I think that is a cope from people who don't want to admit that they are here too, just elusive, probably because brits are hermits and we simply don't spend as much time in and around the water as other cultures do.
I, a marine bisologist, declare this to be a German stingray. These are amongst the most peaceful animals in the world, unless you insult it's mother, and then they are prone to robbing your house during the summer holidays
we do have great whites in uk waters and have had for years ... normally off the cornish / west coast due to warmer waters but recently evidence has been seen that supports the theory that they are travelling into the north sea (east coast) too . that does look like a basking shark and a small one at that. but still a rare sight ;)
I agree, it would be an extremely rare occasion to find a Great White off the Southern UK coast...it's still debated by experts in the field weather there are any in the Mediterranean let alone this far north.
jinxy72 No evidence but I think it's possible, The Ocean is vast and lets be honest who really goes into the water here anyway, it's disgusting and cold. Fisherman have said they have seen them but no proof. I hope they do come into our waters, It would be great and exciting knowing such a powerful predator lives nearby.
I live in Pembrokeshire worked on fishing boats (been up and down this bit of water many of times)and yes its cold here south wales and there are many sharks here that is a Baskin shark ,I think one the biggest blue shark was caught around here ,so no its not a great white ha ffs
British water condition are perfect for great white sharks, the water in South Africa is far colder than the water in Cornwall. Sharks that have been tracked have been found to travel 100s of miles from one country to another, some even pass through the English Channel.
All these "experts" saying "yeah it's definitely a basking shark" have no idea. No idea at all because it's impossible to tell. Could be a juvenile basker but could also be a porbeagle, thresher, mako...etc.. as for a great white? Don't make me laugh!!
No it is actually quite easy to tell, firstly by deduction. What is it LIKELY to be? The waters there have been studied for a long long time so we know what time of year certain species are going to be there. Basking Sharks look just like the film showed. They 'Bask' near to the surface of the water filtering plankton as they do so. People that study sharks and whales distinguish get most of there ID from the only the fin that shows above the water, they can tell apart individual sharks just by taken photos of the gins.....so buddy in this case the so called experts do know what WE ARE talking about...

Then you too sir sound like an idiot, there have been ZERO confirmed reports of great whites in british waters, most of them are people mistaking basking sharks or publicity stunts/hoaxs.. There have been ZERO traces of shark predation on seal colonys, no sightings of attacks, no wounded seals with bite marks or carcasses.. Its all hear-say, hundreds of ppl have wasted thousands of hours on boats with makeshift cages and chum slicks throwing bait overboard like a scene out of jaws.. For what ? where is the video of a great white in british waters ? Do you also beleive in the loch ness monster ? lol
korzer well I never said that there were its just that there could be. And I don't think there would be a massive migration but an individual could appear here and there. They cross almost all oceans its just they don't stick around. Could as easily be a porbeagle
Settle down folks! This shark only eats the tiniest of morsels in the seas and oceans! Look at the leisurely way it was swimming! Most likely, as said before, a Basking Shark and harmless to humans!
It's the basking shark n they never bite humans. You could of jump in and I guarantee it would swim away, they cruise on surface alot. I've been surfing all over the Welsh and Cornish coast and seen lots of sharks including swimming with a basking shark. And yes Uk waters do have great white. Not many. But they have been spotted by a few fisherman. RU-vid it. Argue all you want but it's a fact
Looks like a Young basking Shark or a Young great white, the dorsal fin and the tail look similar to each other, but this one was curious about you, basking Sharks dont behave like that, i Think you met a great White :)
I'd say a young basking shark based on the dorsal fin shape as well as the movement of the shark, also extremely unlikely to be a great white, if it was anything it'd more likely be a Porbeagle, they're far more common in UK waters
I was thinking porbeagl too but they have a rounder dorsal fin, this was pointy, but i hope for everyone in northern europe thats its just a basking one and the Whites stay the hell away from our Waters, scares the shit outta me
Great white's distribution just about avoid UK waters, there's a small possibility that they would stray into British water, however it's most likely a basking shark.
We spotted a big shark off Bridlington beach two weeks ago well are lass did and then me it was big and this was no basking shark which scared mi a bit cause we was about to go in for a paddle wi kids and it was only in waste high water and it was no great white but it was about 8-9 ft long with what we could see and wi have only ever seen one more shark other then this that close to beach
If it's not a Basker It may be a Thresher Shark....it's one or the other, Threshers are 99% of the time mistakingly claimed to be Great White sightings in UK waters...
At 2:10-2:16 i saw splashes on the right next to the cliff.waves hitting the rocks or could somthin b feeding at surface...id bet theres G.W.s in these waters, there are seals and shark hiding spots along the surf...Canada's has them in there chilly waters🤷
You could have stopped the jetski and jumped in the water to verify what kind of shark it was, If it ate you whole, it was probably a megladon, if it took both your legs and half of your torso, It was probably a white shark, If it swam up to you grinning and kissed you, It was probably a basking shark, if it grabbed all your money and sucked all your blood from your body, then spat you out, It was a Meghan Markle shark.🤣
@1:35 just as he looks back towards the wake the Seadoo leaves you can see the Fin above water just for one second and it was right beside him before he took off. Sharks are curious by nature, the shark wasn't trying to attack you it was just interested in the commotion on the top of the water thinking it could be food ;but sharks aren't man eaters and Seadoos are not in their diet either. Too bad you didn't have anything to chum the water with you probably could have got the shark to breach and put on a show for you. I'd be back there chumming the water from a boat trying to make friends with the shark.
+Allen Johnson Not sure what the law says these days but a few years ago there wasn't any law that said you couldn't drink and jet ski, maybe it's changed now I'm not sure??
