If your rig is built on 35 inch or larger tires, you may be experiencing lackluster steering performance. Before you spend thousands of dollars on a hydro-assist ram setup, take a look at this!
The JL Wrangler and JT Gladiator Jeeps have an electric power steering pump, which can be upgraded with this simple kit from Apex Performance Products. Increasing the bypass relief pressure of your steering's hydraulic system will restore steering to factory feel and performance with up to a 39" tire.
Follow along as we install and test this kit on a BIG JL Unlimited Rubicon running 39" BFG tires!
More info on the kit can be found here: www.apexdesignsusa.com/produc...

Use APEX and STEER SMARTS YETI XD SECTOR SHAFT BRACE W/ FRAME SIDE TRACK BAR REINFORCEMENT BRACKET on a Rubicon 392 running 38”. With a Fox adjustable Stabilizer. Drives great. Ran it through the Rubicon trail with no issues. Will probably add Redneck Ram just to take pressure off steering system.

Dec '22 update. Recently added Redneck Ram, which eliminates the Fox Stabilizer. Steering is really smooth and goes lock to lock with a finger in park. Since the electric pump really only puts out added pressure when you are turning I am glad that is runs at lower pressures on a normal basis. With the Redneck Ram you may not need the Sector Shaft Brace, as it is doing a lot of the work. However, I plan on owning the jeep for a long time and would rather have it be on the overkill side when it comes to the steering strength and redundancy. Have no doubt if I put on 40" the steering would be the same on or off road.

@@biggru4114 great message/point- literally was posting about the same thing :) Did you port the factory box yourself or send it in? I did the PSC big bore on our JK- amazing….. was going to go the same rout with the JT but considering looking into if this box can be ported.

What should the cost be to install this system?

While the increased pump pressure “feels” nice. A hydro assist takes a lot of beat down off the steering box itself. Which is a big deal when you start moving 37”+ on bead locks, in the rocks….. so this whole clip is great for those that off road once a month, don’t go too hard, etc. but for those that often off road, and take the harder lines, etc. the psc big bore with hydro assist is the way to go.

We just posted a blog article detailing many more power steering upgrade options for the JL/JT mountzionoffroad.com/power-steering-upgrades-for-jl-wrangler-and-jt-gladiator/

@@MountZionOffroad I appreciate the discussion on the strengthened box by swapping to PSC setup- but in my opinion what’s even more valuable is the hydraulic ram being the component that takes the abuse. Without the hydraulic ram the steering box is absorbing all of the force via drag link- with the ram in place that force is sent through the ram…. Frame deflection, and crappy boxes have been an issue in JK’s and JL/JT’s… Ram is the way to go :)- not saying your post didn’t promote the same message, just adding to it. :)

Redneck Ram. Better for your pump and way more assisted power without breaking the bank. Plus, less effort on installation (my opinion based upon how much that JLU was torn down.) Also, doubles as a stabilizer replacement. Which this kit does not do.

So the factory pump is designed for 1300psi until relief for safety reasons but Apex thought it was wise to run a psi number the pump really wasnt designed for? Seems like a bandaid and a ticking time bomb🤷‍♂️🤔

APEX engineers things very well. The factory system does not use a power steering fluid cooler. APEX includes a very high quality cooler, which is the primary concern at higher pressures. However, your concern is valid and needs to be taken into account along with your intended uses of the vehicle. For example, if your primary use is to traverse extremely hot terrain such as Arizona, Nevada, Southern California where there are vast amounts of land and very few areas for service then that needs to be taken into account across your entire build.

@MountZionOffroad Thx for the reply. I would like to mention, 1) the factory steering pump was never designed to be cooled too manipulate the max pressure valve and run efficiently. 2) the cooler is not going to add more output force to the oem steering pump 3) the factory steering pump was designed for the oem Rubicons optional 35" tire option package. This is jus my opinion, we all have our own so its just a friendly debate. I think that spending money trying to manipulate the factory steering pump and box are not worth it when going up in tire size 37s or larger. The factory steering system already has a number of complaints for its lack of strength and non-consistent feel with Jeep already doing a recall on the factory aluminum box and giving them a new steel one. Just sayin
