Shwartswood lake in Sparta, New Jersey, in 1976, was my first and only encounter, and I was in a row boat fishing, at about 7am. And I was about 30 yards away, it was not a bear. And even being in the boat I was a bit nervous. However I think that they know that I was close but were not troubled by it. Then they stood up, and so quietly disappeared into the tree line.
I don’t think there will be any pavement apes out there, but just in case don’t make eye contact that’s when they will approach and try to take advantage of you, be safe out there.
