It's probably frustrating not having bluetooth or aux in or anything like that, but that Mcintosh deck probably sends out such a clean signal when playing CDs. I'm sure someone makes an interface to adapt the cd changer into an aux in, I would've kept the Mcintosh.
great job on the sound deadening.....i actually have the 03-04 version of that legacy with the bacis stereo system and looking to upgrade the speakers to get some really loud speaker that arnt too expensive. can you recommend some components and tweeters that can fit the factory locattions plz.
Into I'm not the James you were asking but have a look on www.audioboffins.com at execration for the price they are pritty good iv had them in my car for over a year and I do db drag over here in the UK
I fit Image dynamics cts6.5cx components, had to use almost 1.5" of spacers and longer pins for the door panels, they are 2.75" deep mids. this is on a 2003 wrx.
Hi Again James I found an iPhone app that helps you design speaker boxes. I’m not sure if it works for andriod too, but if possible can you check it out and share your thoughts on it on a video?? ‘Speaker box lite’ Thanks bud
Holy Shit Brother You knock the socks off 1Puglife's Buddy, (Can't remember the name of the Shop, but he calls his dad Papa Sandoo I think..!) In Canada Ya know..!? Ah, oh Yeah its CarPhonix... He does know some stuff but You Really Know Your Shiz..! I Like it...
Usually cars are sent to dealers then of to the auction before they go to the auction sellable things are removed. And the metal box is an expand unit to connect more options to the unit. Just by the logo on the monitor Strada The system was about $2500 above and if the system is in good condition it is resold for $1000 And it is sad to see how much money put in the car total cost for the system bet it was $6000 when it was done quality of the work not included.
Hey James, without a camera and explanation on video how long does it take you to sound deaden a door?? Just a general average I do realize that some cars are more time consuming than others
Hey James. Do you guys not ever install any of the higher end Focal stuff? I have a 97 Legacy Outback and I went with K2 Power in it. I won't lie and say that I just had the speakers put in and it sounded great just like that. Not at all. In fact, I did some acoustical work inside the car as well tri-amp (KRX2 with sub) and active crossover (with TA and now individual eq per driver). I would guess the difference between K2 power and the flax sets is more the smoothness of the drivers. K2 P's use aramid fibre which is known for its elevated distortion issues. In determining crossover points I had to find the frequencies that the high drivers distorted at and cross them over above that. In the end, it became a job for a Helix DSP Pro that I added last year. With Smaart (rational acoustics system that I use for tuning), I ended up with a very respectable response measurement once I worked out the relative phase issues from the driver positioning with some small creative adjustments. The result is exactly what I was trying to achieve in that I wanted hyper detail. I work in pro audio and my whole world is that. It sucks to get into the car at the end of the day and listen to something I just heard with lowered resolution. My guess is that the difference between the Focal Flax stuff (which is what turned me onto Focal in the first place) and the K2 Power stuff is resolution. Is that what you guys have seen. Like I say in my car it did take a bit to get to work right as the distortion at the crossover point was crazy. Maybe the Flax are a little more forgiving of things like long distances between drivers and stuff.
We have done one Full Focal K2 system with two2 and three way components maybe a few years ago, the reason we dont do them more often is they're nearly double price of the Flax, and the flax sound great, (nearly as good as k2) so the Flax's are just a lot better value. Thanks for your story.
Interesting. I only got to compare the KRX 2 to the old Poly 2 way (which is what the Flax replaced) and there was a marked difference there but I never got to A/B the Flax to the KRX. One thing we should note for the folks who aren't aware is that KRX for something like a decade dominated the competition car audio scene. Focal has a higher end product which is crazy money but utilizes berrylium high frequency diaphrams. Out of reach to most of us. It's a 5 figure car audio solution. KRX was recently replaced by the ES 165 KX 2/3 (2 or 3 way). I am told they are another step up again. The biggest difference that I noted was the tweeters. Still Aramid fibre but the surround is different and there is no phase plug anymore which may eliminate some distortion. I spent the money so my end is done. I had the KRX's before there was ES 165 KX and Flax just hit the market and no-one had display here (Canada) yet. James thanks for your comparison. If I were to do it again I would definately take the time to compare the Flax directly to the ES 165 KX. It may not be a big enough step up for you. One thing to know. In audio 50% more dollars never equates to 50% better performance. It is kinda the nature of the beast but you can break the bank too.
Normally I would begrudgingly agree with you about Pioneer sounding better than Sony, but there is the Sony RSXGS9! Side note, I would take the worst or cheapest Alpine over the best Pioneer for sound quality pretty much every day based on THD. Now this is where you lost me James, by pulling out a McIntosh Labs deck for a Pioneer and even whispering SQ..."are you kidding me?" LOL Also, who ever up-sold the previous car owner all this extra electronics and components must have had power of the dark side of the force. I mean it is unbelievable...all that...stuff!!!
Pioneer 80prs is the best deck. The thd on that radio is great and the settings is perfect for anybody with aftermarket car audio. The time alignment is pretty cool
Removing a Mcintosh and replacing with a Sony or a Pioneer...Removing or de-powering and blanking-off a functional flat screen display??? Sounds like a MASSIVE downgrade. The owner should just write you a check to leave what's in there alone lol.
+DS Splicer you do realize that we do what the owner wants aye, we’re not dragging people off the street and forcing them to let us take stuff out of their car...
What would you do with it ? Its all setup for the Japanese region only, you cant change the language, you cant listen to local radio in most countries, you cant play most DVD's unless they are from japan, and there are no modern features like Bluetooth or even aux in. Not to mention most of the Japanese aftermarket stuff is usually installed terribly. Usually is not integrated to factory stuff like wheel controls etc. "Look at this cool flat screen display that i can stare at but not do anything with"
Sony hi res audio is better sound than pioneer, I have a pioneer 80prs its good, but I gotta update it.. Sony better... and....i can't use my android phone like ppl can with the sony
Personally I would still go for a pioneer flagship av stereo (current model is the AVH-Z5050bt) because I need more than radio and cd. And they have all the sound settings you could ever need in them. 5ch time alignment, 13 band eq, speaker level adjust, source level adjust, 3 way crossover with lots of increments and slope adjustment. 28 bit dac and 4v pre outs. What does the 80prs do that’s more than this?
You say you have been doing car audio for 5 years but don't know what that box that says Panasonic is??!?!?!?! It's the brain box ...! Why would you snip the RCA's of that Strada....you take that the brain and the two screens and pop it on eBay....duhhhh! Garbage?!?!
