Do you know of any other mistakes people make when washing their bikes? Are you for or against pressure washers?
@SkiSurfBike

Pressure washer is great if you're really eager to update all bearings in your bike. It's really efficient in pushing water and dirt beyond every seal... Rag and warm water, maybe a drop of car shampoo. And if you use car wax after washing the bike, you'll be able to just brush off the mud once it's dried. Forget silicon spray!

As long as you stay back a bit I've never had problems with a car wash sprayer.

Some bike degreasers are hydrocarbon based and also can contaminate brakes with residue. So be careful with your degreasers as well as your lubes.

One mistake is: Not washing the bike for its whole lifetime. Which is what I'm doing right now. I fucking hate washing my bike.

May I suggest before wiping the water off, Bounce the bike on it wheels will dislodge more water. (and you will see it on the ground) then wipe the rest off with a microfiber cloth.

Ive found that spraying the brush or cleaning rag with the degreaser works better and is more accurate than going willy nilly all over your frame work etc Saves money and saves the re-greasing !

Agreed, use the bottom of a soda bottle, spray degreaser in there and then brush on with paintbrush 👍

I use low pressure hose after most rides. Dry with old towel immediately.If not I at least wipe chain down and Squirt lube it and wipe suspension parts. If my parts accumulate grease I take them off and use an old rag to clean them by hand. Dont like using chemicals if they arent necessary. 33 years mtbing. It works for me.

With the bike industry in trouble and needing to make sales, Enduro Bearings would advise to grab that pressure washer and point it full blast straight at those holes in the top of the headset for that oh-so-kool headset cable routing.

Another to do when you are done and you want to dry it off now is to ride it on the street to get any other water in the bike and then just dry it off normally

I treat most surfaces with automotive sealant (syn wax alternative). I then just don't wash the bike. Even if I put it away wet, the stuck on mud sheds over the course of the next rides. That said, I don't take the bike in any sort of living space. Having ditched the cleaning routine, I notice that I've been able to get full life out of many components that normally would suffer from premature failure or really faded performance. Less mysterious creaks, like from pedal or headset area. Tires seem to work better. Things don't look as faded as soon. Not going to go back to cleaning agents--my next cleaning will likely just be to reapply a higher end coating, like ceramic, which I expect to be needed in a year.

There's nothing better than wheeling a properly clean, well lubed and adjusted bike out for a ride. How some folk can wheel out filthy, gritty, noisy bikes to start a ride is beyond me! Anyway, this video - and at last one that is sensible about pressure washers. They are great tools for the job, if you take a little care with them. Bike specific products can be a tad expensive, and I just use car products mostly, oh and GT 85, of course! The smell... 😍 Pound shop car wash and wax is a hundred times better than any washing up liquid. Whilst washing up liquid will clean your bike, it will only leave a superficial shine. It's designed for cleaning hard greasy surfaces, not paint. I must admit to being a fan of Autoglym's ceramic spray for giving the paint a real shine and protection. Very easy and quick to use.

Pressure washers are amazing tools! As for using car products, it's perfectly safe to use as long as there is no TFR (traffic film remover) or other nasty acids that could strip out the grease from your bike. Also if you are using a wash and wax version of car shampoo that could leave a residue on the disc, but other than that they are perfectly safe! 👍 If your brakes aren't squeaky after the ceramic spray and GT85 you need to share your secrets with us! 🤘
@micks61
@micks61 7 месяцев назад
Yes I'm wary of disc contamination, so am very careful around them, and use disc brake cleaner on the rotors before the final rinse. GT 85 and the Ceramic spray get sprayed onto a cloth or foam applicator pad to avoid them getting anywhere they shouldn't!

For some stuff, like the cassette, it's so easy to remove them I just take the wheels off, remove the cassette and clean it off the bike. It's also easier to get into areas near the bottom bracket and fork with the wheels removed. I will do an initial spray with the garden hose, then bring the bike into my workshop on the stand, remove the wheels and clean with a hand bottle spray and rags. I don't buy any of these products for cleaning, just a degreaser for the cassette and other drivetrain parts.

Washing your bike will always contribute to wear as it will always remove grease from areas you can't easily return it to. Such as headsets, pivot hardware and wheel bearings. A gentle brush of dried on mud won't wreck the paint, especially if you've got invis. As the owner of a bike workshop though my opinion is use the pressure washer at the carwash all over the bike and put it away wet... 🤑

I used to use all the products (waste of time and money imo) now my local garage has put in a pressure washer with a powerfoam mode, its the best thing ever. 2 quid 5min and im done, powerfoam then a high pressure rinse (avoiding seals) blasting down the calipers has made my brakes work better and squeal free. I just degrease the chain before i go and give it a dry when i get home and lube the chain with a m4 plus maintenance spray, its mega cos u dont get all that crap clogging up your jockey wheels ect and you know its clearing the water out, penetrating the chain rollers and lubricating them.

Presoak with dish washing liquid (Dawn is best), then a 3,000 pound pressure washer with the red tip, then drop the bike a dozen times to get the drops off, finally hit with air compressor. I do this once a year, if the bike needs it or not.

I think in this case he made it in a smart way ,just represent your sponsor goods in more casual and important way and avoid mentioning it .A kind of fraud but packed wisely.I always use cheap sewing machine oil,old cotton clothes,tooth brushes or shoe brushes and some non abrasive house chemistry so i get the same result as in this video.Once i even cleaned the whole bike with Wd40,except brakes offcourse.I also used gas for gas lamps,cleans it good and makes it shine .Thats why i hate you tube tutorials cause they propagate some stuff that you dont need and that are expencive in comparison with mantioned ,kinda diy stuff.

Lube your chain with sewing machine oil and it will be great.Any other debate about the chain is nonsence.The lighter the chain,the sooner will wear out so dont bang your heads .You tubers present you fancy chemistry in smarter or dumber way for money so you dont wanna listen to that.Use old cotton clothes ,spray bottle with watter,any smaller brushes etc.Dont waste your money cause someone told you to.

Berm peak debunked the claim about it blasting grease out and also that even at almost point blank spraying on the cassette, bottom bracket ect ect doesnt harm the bike at all already 3 years ago. True about the paint but I mean using a pressure washer aint rocket science, just some common sense and you'll be fine.
