I would consider separating both first-aid- and repair-kit into two kids each: one for daily/regular use (like mini/letterman or sun block) and one for seldomly or never use (Gates drive, innertube or ibuprofen). That way you can store away the second and don’t mess them up daily
It was me who suggested the gun !! I got soooo excited that I would get a shout out 😢! P.s. Banff is amazing… you must vist lake Louise before you set off 🎉
Thanks for saying you booked the flight and now it's real. I am planning the same trip, so you motivated me to book, which I just did. Will arrive in Calgary Tues June 20th, I live in Toronto Canada. I'll be doing the whole trip finishing end of August. I hope to see you out on the trail, I've enjoyed your videos
That's really great to hear. Thanks for letting me know. I really hope to see you out there. If you're planning on finishing end of August we should meet up at some point. Let me know your progress once you get going.
make sure you patch kit will work for TPU tubes (TUBOLITO). normal tube patches are made for Butyl tubes (regular old bike tubes). this may not be a problem since your using self adessive patches, but worth a double check. also another note, get yourself a patch kit with a separate glue and patch (again make sure it works for TPU tubes). self adessive patches don't work as well and are a get you home solution rather than a long turn fix
I’d take two inner tubes, and a pressure gauge. I’ve seen it can be very dusty in parts, so perhaps eye googles, and the Buff you use for a pillow cover could be used for a face mask, as well as sun protection for the back of your neck. I’d also pack a chapstick lip balm, water purification tablets, and a spare pair of glasses with photochromic lenses. Other than that I think you have got it covered. One of the other comments mentioned para cord for hanging your bear bag from a tree. It’s a good idea which I would recommend too. I also seen one guy who purchased a series of six maps in Canada for the entire trail which would be a good idea. Also purchase a water proof map case to fix to your handlebar bag to allow you to see the map to follow the trail and hopefully not get lost. Looking good. Cheers 👍
I'll pick up another tube. I was in two minds. I'll also get a pressure gauge. The eye goggles look like they would be useful in certain sections. I'll have to have a think about that. Good suggestion with the Buff. It can double up as a face mask. I'm going to get two new pairs of glasses, one pair will be sunglasses and photochromic.I have some Dyneema line which I can use to hang the bearbag. It's designed to be bear proof (not sure about that) and tied to a tree but I think hanging it is a good idea. Lots of good suggestions. Thanks 👍
Few extras I found that might be useful to carry .. (1) spare bolts, (2) metal cable to tie your bike to your tent, (3) spare rear axle, (4) superglue, (5) 2 inch plastic spatula to remove mud, (6) Celox-A .. Good luck !
Thanks for the advice. I definitely need to get some spare bolts together. The metal cable tie is a good suggestion too. I'm guessing it's more of a thin long cable. I'll look into it. I hadn't thought of a spare rear axle. Breaking one of those would be a nightmare for me as mine is non standard. I'd never heard of Celox A until you mentioned it. It looks like good stuff. Thanks for commenting.
Australian here. For us over here, a snake bandage is very important in case of a bite. Think there'll be many venomous snakes on the route? I'm so excited for you mate and looking forward to following along. Remember, there's only so much preparation you can do. At some point, just tell yourself you've done enough and go enjoy it!
I'll look into it. There were plenty of snakes on the East coast so I'm guessing they'll be on this route too. I really like your point about preparation. You're dead right. I don't think I'll ever feel totally ready but I'll listen to your advice. Cheers 👍
Lots of good advice in the comments, A couple of bits that i remember came in handy. Wired headphones (less to charge) I also had a little Bluetooth speaker for the long slow stretches as riding with headphones in isn't ideal. I had a saved playlist on RU-vid of the DIY hacks an instructions for bike stuff. Diaralyte sachets and chamois cream for the saddle sore arse. Camp flipflops/sandals. The gun carry idea, I don't know what the rules an regs would be for you to get one and carry it across the border etc. I had bear spray an a bicycle bell 😅. I had a cheap handle bar riser extender thing attached that I put my light, garmin, gopro etc on. ... if I think of anything else I'll edit it lol. Little to say I am jealous an would love to do it all again! I will be following for sure.
Excellent advice. The wired headphones, I'll definitely do that. Anything to save power. I'll go with the friendly bell instead of a gun 🤣. Diaralyte is a great suggestion. Cheers!!!
If you’re worried about seating the bead after a puncture repair?either take a really small bottle (20ml)of dishwashing liquid and a very small square of sponge or Swedish cloth to apply the liquid to both beads sparingly.think moisten the beads.this aids tremendously with reseating the beads once air pressure is applied.or aquire a small amount of beads seat compound from a tire 🛞 shop and apply in the same manner.
Great. Thanks for the tip. I'll be getting the tyres set up tubeless over the next couple of weeks so will take your advice then. I can keep a small bottle of dishwashing liquid on my spares kit. Cheers 👍
Thought i’d add this to the comments of a very good video….there is a company based in London called Wild Sky Gear they specialise in cuben fibre bags….roll bags…tarps…dry bags….stuff sacks….customise too! I’ve a few ! recommend 🙂👍🏻
Thanks for doing this video! Now that you completed the GDMBR, is there anything you brought that you would leave behind next time or is there anything that you wish you had added to this list? Also, in reference to your wahoo, did you ever get lost or go off route?
I think there will be a video out on Monday where I discuss this. In a nutshell, I wish I'd brought a tarp to hide under in the rain, and more food!!! The Wahoo worked perfectly and I didn't lose the trail once. Cheers 👍
I don't know if you have seen any of the Dirty Teeth channel videos for the GDMBR, he's has very detailed videos on these subjects, many of the stuff that you've covered in this video and more, like you said, there's an abundance of info here in RU-vid and they're very helpful. I wish you the best in your adventure!
Cheers. Thanks for commenting. I'll look Dirty Teeth up. Somebody else recommended his channel too. I think I might have watched one about the Klite usb dynamo hub.
Ever thought of bringing super glue for any deep cuts. I think super glue duct tape and zip ties will get a man/woman home from anywhere in any bad situation. Can't wait for more of your adventures. Thanks for sharing
I forgot about Sulerglue. Thanks for pointing it out. I'll be sure to put some in. I totally agree, those three items can get you through most problems. Cheers 👍
Tubeless can be a mess .. my advice is set it up now as i did it one day before a trip and it was a nightmare had small leaks through out the trip and valveless broke …… do it your self that give you time to learn and dial it in
It looks like you have everything you need. Two more essentials for me were sun sleeves and after bite, i'm not sure if after bite is available in the UK but you should get some in Banff.
Never heard of after bite. I'll look into it. The sun sleeves are a good idea. I'm taking a long sleeved shirt which should help but I'll be using a t shirt at times too.
I’ve been experimenting with charging from a dynamo hub for my bike tour this summer. Started by using a few different 10k power banks which did not charge. Ended up with a 5k power bank from SKS which can be charged and charge devices at same time. It charges to nearly 100% over a 6 hour period on the bike which means it keeps my phone (used for navigation) charged. I am also going to bring a 10k power bank as back up.
I really need to do some proper tests with my powerbanks. I have a 20k and a 10k but, based on your experience I may need to go for a 5k. Thanks for letting me know. Cheers 👍
I made an Excel spreadsheet to track my gear weight. Was way too heavy last big trip. I got Stans 52mm rims on my summer fatbike set and holy bejeezis are the beads on tight. Concerned about trailside repairs. I want to ride my bush route from Huntsville to Temagami in canoe country here in Canada.
I've decided to convert to tubeless and do it myself. It'll be interesting. That route sounds good. I would love to get out canoeing in Canada. It's a dream for me. I'll get there one day. Cheers.
Little tub of Sudacrem, magic stuff! Vaseline, good for lips, firelighting etc. Glucose tablets. Antihistamine cream for bites/stings. Eye bath! You never know! We were in Canada on honeymoon in May/June and the bugs were hungry for my blood, so maybe a head net? If you are in Banff and have time, go up the the tea rooms in Lake Agnes &/or cable car up Sulphur Mountain. x
Hi Mat. Used to work in a Dr office and one of a physicians there suggested Tylenol or any acetaminophen based drugs for pain. His reasoning was that the kidneys are already working hard in a race like this, that using Ibuprofen puts more strain on them. Depending how good you are with keeping hydrated I'd do some research on this. Good luck, I'll be blue dotting for you.
Hi. Thanks for the advice. I'll do some research. I haven't heard of the issues around Ibuprofen. I'm not actually racing the Tour Divide, just leisurely riding the route through July and August. We don't have Tylenol in the UK but I can pick some up once I get to Canada. Cheers 👍
I know you ended up not needing them, but have you checked if the Skabs patches would work with the Tubolito tube? I can't find that information anywhere and regular patch kits apparently don't work.
I have a specific patch kit for the Tubolito. I'll probably take another as it sounds like punctures are a common issue. I'm also seriously considering going tubeless again. I'd still take two tubes just in case. It can only help. Cheers 👍
Hi Keith. That's incredibly kind of you. I'm in the middle of sorting out transfers and hotels at the moment. I'd appreciate any help. It might be easier to discuss this by email. My email is matryder2@gmail.com. Cheers.
It appears you are well prepared, although I used to have a bit more in my first aid kit when I would go bicycle touring just in the event of a more serious cut or injury, some bandage/sterile dressing perhaps? steri-strips? A bone saw?
Also they weren't really an option back when I did my long distance rides, but I see a lot of people now have some sort of emergency satellite phone? I am sure they are a pricy item that ideally you will never use, but probably worth it for the one time you do.
I'll probably add a few more bits, including sterisrips. I believe my CrankBros M20 multitool has a bone saw attachment. For larger bones I'm sure I could use the front sprocket.
In hindsight do you think that a valve removal tool is essential to have? I bought a multitool which has a chain breaker on it, and all the Allen bits, but it doesn't have that tool.. And I was wondering if I should buy one separate? - Going on my first big trip soon too, with zero experience.. Btw, love all the videos I just binge watched the whole GDMBR series, and the livestream q&a.
Hi. I used the one on my multi tool once so I definitely think it's worth taking one. I would also recommend buying a separate one as the one on the multi tool was awkward to use. I think you can get simple plastic ones which weigh very little. Good luck with your first trip. Where are you going?
@Mat Ryder , again I am new to this , but one product I have had great success with in the past when ultra running in wet or winter ultras ( on my feet ) is Destin ( baby rash cream ) aids in protecting skin from moisture , will act as a bit of a lubricant and has healing properties in it as well.
Ooooo you have lots of stuff! Sounds complicated to me....... it is like, I packed my bag and in it I put 🤣 what about antihistamines, ster strips and a water pistol instead of a 🔫 gun 😊 You will have fun, I can tell.
eBay-Zefal HP X alloy bodied high pressure pump.only the model with the HP and X rotating knob on the handle.160psi max, best pumps ever made!numbered one through four…one being the shortest, four being the longest length of the four lengths available.try and find a number one as it’s the shortest and lightest.I’ve had my number four for 30 years…brilliant.presta and schrader compatible.
Somebody else recommended that pump too. Problem is I've only just bought a Lezyne floor drive pump with a built in guage so can't justify buying another yet. I'll take a look anyway. Cheers.
Set your recording codes on the drone and go pro to 265 codex that way you save space on your cards .. also get dji pro controller bicycle mount .. and those so called dry bags are not dry bags i have them over the years wont trust them with electronics… other tip add apple air tag to your bicycle box while flying and leave on your bike if it gets stolen you be able to track it …
I'll look into changing the codex. I wondered if there was a more efficient way to store/upload the footage. I didn't know there was a mount for the controller. I'll look into that too. The air tag suggestion is a great idea. The dry bags are not great I agree. I've made quite a few repairs to mine over the years I'm not sure Dyneema is strong enough for things other than tents/tarps etc.
@@matryderadventures there a few ways 1 this system is good for travel ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pj7UyRqR_ko.html. The other system is more phone related it called frame . I0 it. The system i perfer ie it compress the file and uploads as a proxy file so i have a back up just in case drone get lost or cards fail which has happen .. but I generally back up to iPad mini 6 and edit video on that while at camp noting else to do late into the night
I'll see how I get on with mine. It's been good so far but I've not used it much. The Hammerhead seems to get good reviews Sonia an option if needed. Cheers.
another thought, you said you are just repeating what you have been shown, i can not stress enough that you should practice these things now, so you know you can do them
Yes. He's the reason I'm doing the GDMBR really. I was going to hike the PCT and came across his channel. I watched his videos and had to do it. Thanks for commenting 👍
A small child's water gun loaded with water in which I've boiled a dozen scotch bonnet chillies has helped me thwart 2 attempted robberies and protects also from rare determined dog attacks
