I head over to Twisted Oaks Bike Park in Ipswich for a training ride and discuss my preparation for the GDMBR. Watch as I puff and pant my way around the trail and come perilously close to passing out due to exhaustion.
Thank you for watching.

With regard to saddle sores, i am sure my padded shorts caused mine as it got so hot down there with no airflow! my symptoms were like spots/zits , thanks to my phone camera i could get a good look at them ! lol. anyway i popped them and just had instant relief, i picked up some 40% zinc oxide cream which is for nappie rash, the cool air blowing around my under carriage was heaven after that with merino undies. and i ate twice as much food as usual and came home 17 pounds lighter.

One more thing i will take next time is an insulated bottle, my water got very warm from the sun and in the heat it was horrible to drink like that.

I'm really torn when it comes to the padded shorts. I think I'm leaning towards merino underwear. I may take both and ditch the padded shorts once I've been going for a while. I guess it'll depend on my training too. I'll look forward to eating plenty while I'm away!! Thanks for the comment.

I've just bought an insulated Klean Kanteen bottle and a large cage for it. I was thinking about hot coffee and hadn't even thought about keeping water cold. Thanks 👍👍

@@matryderadventures options are good, padded shorts work well for some. i did get to test ride the same bike as yours with a brooks cambium saddle and that had a nice bit of flex and the bloke who's bike it was swore by that seat and merino undies.

@@chromebook2724 I've been considering a Brooks C17. It keeps getting recommended. I might have to get one.

That's good safety advice..... always push bikes up hills as it prevents falling off from lack of momentum! Looked a fun ride, I would have only managed down hill bits🤣 I think I mentioned in a previous watch that your saddle was no more than a cheese wire. It's good to see you have realised this before your awesome trip. Chubb rub may help your undercarriage, just trying to help a boy out. Oh and for the record Woodbridge in Suffolk is quite hilly😊 Enjoy your training 💪

Chubb Rub? I've never heard of it but I'll look it up. Isn't a Chubb a fish? I'm not rubbing a fish on anything!!!

Very much enjoying your channel 🙌 Very best of luck for the upcoming mission - I am relatively new to cycling having been a runner for ever, but one thing I bought with me from distance running is Squirrels Nut Butter - it is Truely Excellent at treating chafe hotspots and has mild antiseptic properties as well - seems to work as well for the bike, but I’m sure there are plenty of alternatives you may be pointed at! The other thing I would recommend is core body strength - a strong core to protect your back and hips will be a huge help to keeping you injury free and happy! Your preparation strategy sounds well thought out and you have time to experiment and find what works best for you! Everything crossed for you 😁

Thanks for your comment. I'm glad you enjoy the channel. It's nice to hear. I will look into the Squirrels Nut Butter and probably give it a try, just because it sounds fun, and I like squirrels. I'd better start adding planks to my exercise routine. I may even start going to core classes..I know my gym does them. Thanks for all of the advice and thanks again for following 👍

My research tells me to get a leather seat and wear it in before the GDMBR. And also not to bother with padded shorts. Plus padded shorts are harder to wash and dry. I am also staying away from butt creams because a lot of people say it softens the butt too much and so the skin irritates easier. Good luck on your journey.
@matryderadventures
@matryderadventures Год назад
Thanks for commenting. I may go with the Brooks B17 leather saddle. I'll probably take the padded shorts but only use them at the beginning of the trip, and only if I haven't worn the saddle in properly. I get your point about the butt cream. I think I'll stay away from it too. Thanks for the advice 👍

I'm here from the future to give you sheit about your diet. All I see you eating on the GDMBR is ice cream, various forms of sugar and just bad food. This guy rides out of his way to Pietown and eats desert first.😋

Mat - stumbled across your channel abit ago and am really enjoying your content. I am a novice rider ( at best ) one resource you might find of benefit is Dirty Teeth MTB . A few years ago he put out a series of Tour Divide prep videos. I am looking foreward to following along with your prep to finish at Antelope Wells

I can second the Dirty Teeth vids, they are extremely good. With the amount of training you plan to do I think you should be fine fitness wise. Saddle sores, you are going to get them, chamois cream is water based which will make things worse. I recommend Sudo cream the stuff we use for babies. No question you wear padded shorts. Wide saddle, very useful, that is one the things I wish I had changed. 5 minute stretch at the end of every ride, before you sleep and as soon as you get up. I'm 65 and rode it last June, the sense of achievement is second to none, you are going to love it. If you want any advise as to how to get home from Antelope Wells, let me know?
@matryderadventures
@matryderadventures Год назад
Sudo Cream. I hadn't considered that. I can easily get hold of some too. Thanks for the tip. I'm disciplined enough to do 5 minutes of stretches morning and night so I just need to put a routine together. It's great to hear that you did it in your 60s. I've only recently got into bikepacking but I'm hoping to do a lot more over the next few years. I am definitely looking for information on how to get back. I haven't explored it yet. I got as far as flying from Phoenix but will be grateful for advice. Excellent comment. Cheers.👍
@leebarrett4709

The most economical way I found of getting back was to fly West Jet out of Phoenix. Getting to Phoenix I contacted Jeffrey Sharpe who makes a living out of picking people up from Antelope Wells taking them back to stay at his house for the night and then driving them to Lordsburg where you catch the Greyhound to Phoenix. Have an Uber account to get to a hotel, all the hotels have a shuttle service to the airport. If you want to go this route I can give you Jeffrey's Whats App number, he charges around $200 cash. Ask him to put a cardboard box for you aside so you can get on the Greyhound etc. I am sure this all sounds complicated but it works. The El Paso route is possible but I found the air fare a lot more expensive, if you have any more questions please ask.

Thanks. I've since bought a C17 which I really like. Maybe the B17 would have been better. Brooks are recommended by nearly everyone! I'm hoping to ditch the shorts after a few weeks. Thanks for commenting 👍.

I use a 7 year old Brook B17 for bikepacking on my Surly Moonlander, and have a 50 year old Brooks Pro saddle that I use on my 1987 Miyata 610 touring/commuting bicycle. You buy a saddle that will last you your lifetime, though bicycles will come and go. :) Wishing you well in the GDMBR trip.

I am trying to work out if Chrome Book has actually ridden the Divide because worrying about the temperature of your water when you are riding through the deserts of New Mexico and The Basin in Wyoming seems a bit trivial to me. Having the stuff and living were my priorities.

Now that you're actually riding the Divide, how would you change your training? I've done the Tour Divide three times and still can't ride over those bridges you ride over in this video. 😅 I wore triathlon shorts for the Divide. I'm a former endurance coach and I don't recommend stretching nor foam rollers. (I'm a bit old school and in my mid 50's. With my luck, something would snap anyway!)

If I'm honest, my training didn't really go to plan. I didn't do enough and I should have prepared by doing more climbing!! I don't seem to have the energy to stretch in the evenings. It's interesting that you don't recommend stretching.....am I accidentally doing the right thing? 🤣. You've done this twice??? I'm impressed..thanks for the support 👍

I'm a fan of Asos creme, if you do go with padded shorts take a spare pair and wear them in rotation, try and get two different models so the chamois is differently placed.
