I'm born and raised in Colorado and have yet to ride my state's premiere bikepacking trail...until now! The Colorado Trail is 540 miles (867km), has 72k feet (22k meters) of vertical gain, and travels from Denver to Durango. In this video, I go over some of my gear choices and set off from Waterton Canyon en route to Durango.

Shout out to Baylor. The 'Get out There Kid'. You keep doing what you're doing buddy. Your future is bright. Regarding the car thing. It's tough not having a car, and from the very first one, they have provided ever improving, fast and long distance transportation, prior to which, the best alternative was a horse. The thing is, and I don't think this will be an issue for you, but don't put the bike away when you start driving a car. Keep getting out there for the thrill, and most importantly, for the exercise, and never give it up. This is coming from a 50 something year old long time mountain and now mostly road biker, and it's the best form of non-boring exercise there is - IMO. Bright future buddy!

I've ridden (road bike) with a lightweight backpack and for anyone thinking about this, my advice is to get something with a mesh separator or foam padding that is very breathable, or stick with frame packs. The lack of air circulation on your back traps a lot of heat and humidity. Perhaps Ryan, you can weigh in with your experience? I think your bike setup is terrific though, large wheels and no derailleur to get caught and damaged.

I am a new patreon of yours. I've never done this before, only for you Ryan. don't know why it took so long. You give me so much this channel is my source for positivity and motivation. How much is that worth? Well it's priceless. And far less than the $5 a month that I payed. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'm so excited about the Colorado trail. Can't wait. It's going to be tough going, but what kind of a adventure would it be if it didn't humble you a little in the beginning. It was nice to see your mom it's been awhile and I like her. She did a nice job with you. I have the same osprey backpack. I personally love the tool box on the bottom. When I first found you I could hardly believe it was possible. Someone so positive?? But now I'm a believer and I just want to say YOU BRING VALUE TO MY LIFE.

Ryan, great kickoff video! I watched the whole thing and enjoyed it to the end. I can't wait to see the rest of this series. It's nice to watch on my recovery day after riding in the San Diego mountains yesterday. That's cool that you got Baylor stoked on the first 6 miles before bailing... also nice to see the riding kickoff with your mom at 14:00 . I'm amazed you haven't undertaken this before. Often so much good stuff is right in our backyard. It was epic where I once crossed a mtn pass and the Colorado Trail running along it. I was on my Enduro moto near Pole Creek and the headwaters of the Rio Grande. I think it was Segment 23 east of Silverton. You should consider eating dried figs and dates instead of that commercial stuff that comes wrapped individually. You have a Trader Joe's in Boulder and they sell these organic Turkish dried figs in a ziplock package. These and GU enegy gel are my go-to trail food for sustained energy when I ride MTB.

Here's the thing I just can't figure out. The trapezoid muscle group is one of the most difficult to develop. Even the pros say it's an effort to get them to stand up like that. But you Duzer...unreal definition and all from riding a bike 🤯. So not fair 😕

Well, I’m pretty active with running and biking and general fitness…but I don’t specifically work on my traps…maybe I got lucky genes. Anyway, hope you’re doing well my friend

"Inspirational" is not enough to describe what those videos of yours are, man! I am a 44 years old man, bikepacker and i also at some point of my life decided that i don't want to learn to drive and own a car. My mom also usually driving me to the starting point of my bikepacking adventures. You're not the only one but you sure are our "ambassador"! :)

I think we should distinguish between owning & daily driving a car versus learning and knowing how to drive. Everyone should learn how to drive. It makes you a better cyclist. And the reverse is even more true - being a cyclist makes you a better driver. Encouraging our youth to not learn to drive will severely limit their fture opportunities in life. Just being able to drive when necessary is a very nice benefit. And when traveling, being able to rent a vehicle is very worthwhile. (I rented a small car in Europe and was in Italy during a rail workers strike - avoided catastrophe!) Being there as a designated driver is a good thing. Driving in an emergency is another big plus. And riding a motorcycle requires "learning to drive," as anyone, especially youth, would NOT want to learn on two wheels, but rather a car. Learning everything involved in driving is NOT ideal on two wheels: WAY more power, more dangerous in emergency situation and and most importantly, complete vulnerability. But riding a motorcycle is something everyone should know how to do. Although dangerous, motos are amazing. And then there's the performance driving that people would miss out on. Cyclists make excellent performance drivers - they've learned the basics by necessity and are naturals on the track. Asking a person to miss out on all of this is not the best advice if you ask me.

So funny. Baylor riding without a bottle cage, but with bottles in a fanny pack! Yes, they're FANNY PACKS! (Don't try calling them something else like a "hip pack" or some dumb euphemism!) Ha, ha, how things come full circle. I also don't like back packs while riding. The heat and weight are a bummer. BUT, and it's a big but, a Camelback is FAR BETTER than a fanny pack. I had to use a fanny pack riding in the desert before Camelbacks. Two bottles in cages, two in the pack. This is when the cool riders wore MountainSmith packs. Well, a bunch of tools & food PLUS two water bottles SUCKS around your waist. It's terrible as it leverages itself off your hips, grinding that belt into your gut as you're hunched over the bars. I simply DO NOT GET the resurgence of the fanny pack.

Hey Ryan, do you know of the powerbanks who have a solar panel? They are waterproof and robust so you could hang them on the back of your backpack to charge while you do single trails and they are also capable of charging your phone up to 9 times. I always have mine for longer tours in my backpack :) Love your content!

I think any solar panel can be connected to any power bank via usb….I think
@felidae8935
@felidae8935 3 года назад
@@duzer Yes, could be but the thing I mean, it is directly integrated into the powerbank. so no need to carry around additional gear like the Solar Panel :)

When I see youtube videos like yours, about bicycle touring (or bike-packing) it always surprises me how little you take with you. When I go touring I need four panniers (2 back, 2 front) and more. My clothes alone take one pannier, my sleeping bag and mat the second one. I do cook when camping, so it's understandable I have one front pannier filled with 'kitchen stuff'. But I don't have a drone or an extra camera. I am wondering what it is you do NOT take with you ...
