This part 1 of a 3 part series about installing bilge pumps in a Lagoon 38. In this part I show how I made brackets for mounting the pumps in the narrow keel sump. In part 2 I show how I ran the hoses and in part 3 the final part I show how I did the wiring. Although you may not being do a project just like this I try to show how to do basic things like running wires and hoses. Hopefully these videos will prove useful for anyone working on their boat.Comments and suggestions are welcome!

I like the idea of using aluminium supports, I really didn't like my current pump and float being screwed directly into the fiberglass. And it was a pain when I had to clean the bilge after I bought it having to work around them. I think this is a future project for me, thanks for sharing!

Randy Harris Thanks Randy comments like that help to keep me encouraged to keep making more. It is a bit of a side project but I plan to get more going soon working on the next one now.

Wayne Canning I just found you and while I enjoy the "cruising life" videos, yours are extremely informative and provide the information that I need. I am slowing going through everyone of them!

Drilling holes through a Gatorade cap can be a makeshift screen for a bilge pump, I just invented this. I used a razorblade and some sandpaper to clean it up afterwards, I actually let it sit in some hot water for a minute as well before doing this. First I drilled a bunch of small holes, then went with 1/4 inch, a beetle wont get through it. All the stores are closed, they were out of them where I was at. Shouldn't disrupt the flow rate too much. I fastened the cap to a Shoreline angle bilge pump, and removed the threaded tubing, with water being sucked out from the bottom. I didn't have a 3/4 inch holesaw, so I had to use a crummy plumbing kit with corrugating hosing. However, when I connected it to a full marine battery with Romex (All my boat I wire in Romex #12 solid) it worked like a charm, even with the pump two feet away from the end of the hose (vertically). I have the pump strapped with tie straps to the transom's center metal piece that goes from the bottom of the boat to the last seat. it's snugly secured, and I secured the cap with double tie straps (super small ones was all I had to fit on the side of the pump).

Glad you liked it and got some ideas for your boat. I don't expect this installation to to work exactly for everyone but the hope was to give others ideas for there boats. Good luck and let me know how you make out. You are welcome to post your project on my site Projectboatzen Thanks Wayne

Wayne great video i was trying to figure how i'd mount a pump way back underneath a volvo on a sportfishing boat where its impossible to reach under there. I like the idea of using the metal rod and then affixing the rod to the hull at a point where there is easy access.

Great video, great tips. Keep them comming. Don't see any issues with aluminium shavings in the water. ridiculous comment...

Thanks, no I did not either. As I recall from my metallurgy class the earths crust has a lot of aluminum in it. If I am wrong I will be more careful in the future.

I was thinking doing this with 2 towers and 2 pumps off set and the 3 floats, high alarm above pump #2. Are uss ultra pump switches worth the money over the rule switches. Thank you I enjoyed the video

each aluminum piece will be unique size, but what is your thickness (1/8?). what is suggested for salt water damp bilge. 1/8 for 15 year life? 3/16 for 20 year?

Did the stainless screws mantained well the surrounding alluminium? i thought that in wet enviroment galvanic corrosion will destroy things fast...

hi Wayne the 27S is fully automatic no need for an external float switch, see below Pumps 12 Volt DC Automatic Submersible Bilge Pumps 500 GPH - 2000 GPH Rule Pumps 12 Volt DC Automatic Bilge Pumps 500 GPH - 2000 GPH feature computerized operation on the principle of impeller resistance. Float switches are not required. The pump will turn on every 2-1/2 minutes to sense for water. If water is present, the pump will sense resistance and continue to run until all the water is removed. Thereafter, it will check for water every 2-1/2 minutes.Power use in the checking mode is minimal. models 25S, 27S and 53S why did you add the float switch, i only have a small runabout and was just going to install the 27S pump and place down in the transom area on a piece of 10mm perspex then wire to battery with inline waterproof fuse, connections high up under rear casting deck and run pump out hose under gunnel rear starboard side

Thanks but curious about the metal shavings in the water. I figured this would not be harmful, am I wrong?

1st off no project should result in waste or trash being expelled into the bay or ocean.. there is no sanitation to keep the blue sea clean. . Just me and you yo help out.. lead or iron poisoning, Everheard of it? Started from waste in the water ways.. China has a major problem with contaminated water system . . Not sayong we are on the same page but small issues like this will result in the same matter.... respect our waterways..
