Bill Maher on France

Bill Maher blasts conservatives who dismiss everything French as if it's somehow now "the ultimate argument winner" (see: "Kerry looks French" or Bill O'Reilly's boycott), then goes off on how conservative social issues tarnish the political process.
I don't want any bitching on this page, against anyone, thanks.

its true in the beginning it is a project between France and USA 21 avril 1865, Edouard de Laboulaye has an idea: to built, in the United States, a monument with "a common work of our two. this professor of law at the College de France and ardent promoter of the American political system invited his liberal friends, to celebrate the victory of the Union on the secessionists of the southern United States. Among the guests, a certain Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, 31, listens to the teacher's words. is seduced by such a project. Napoleon III has sided with the Southerners in order to consolidate his position in Mexico, which has been the subject of French intervention since 1862. It will be ten years before the idea really takes shape. Relations between France and the United States became tense when, in July 1870, America chose to support Prussia in the conflict unleashed by Napoleon III. However, Bartholdi does not give up his plan. so the sculptor will be propose to Ismail Pasha (1830-1895), ruler of Egypt, to build a statue to the glory of his country to open the entrance to the Suez Canal. And if the project did not succeed, the Alsatian then wants to use his sketches to design a New York equivalent. In 1871, he exiled himself to the United States, fleeing Colmar, his hometown occupied by the Prussian armies of Bismarck, and the Commune, whose violence he condemns. In his luggage, he carries two models of statues and letters of introduction of Edouard de Laboulaye.

Just droping a word about French politics for our american friends: the French believe that everyone, no matter who, deserves to be treated equally. No matter how rich, how poor, immigrant or citizen. This is not socialism. This is not being over generous. This is what we call "one's fundamental RIGHT". And if you can't accept it in your country, you should at least respect it in ours and stop bashing us about it. We've been doing just fine with it, no matter what you could have heard, and that's never going to change. Ever. "Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité".
@Satakunta
@Satakunta 10 лет назад
Get the fuck out of here! Your French arrogance shines brighter than a thousand suns. I have lived in France for over a decade, and the cognitive dissonance between your flowery rhetoric and how your society actually functions is at least as big as that of the Americans. Go to a bainlieue and ask the people there about 'Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite'. You would be laughed out of there right back to your cushy, middle-class bubble. Surrounded by people who look, sound and think in exactly the same arrogant, solipsistic manner. There is a reason FN is a mainstream political party: the French are FAR less open, inclusive and concerned about justice than they would like to think. Kinda like Americans...

Satakunta Thank you for the comment, it's not everyday that I get such ignorant and stupid ones. Also, you shouldn't assume things about people you talk- no, insult so bravely. Oh, and just in case you'd want to yell at me some more, know that you'd make both of us a favour not to. MrDimibanez I respect France too but we are not voting for a fascist party. I think we should focus more on the EU and stop living in the past British Empire. The US is the one who lives on past glories like WW2 and think they still apply today. Not us.
@MrDimibanez
@MrDimibanez 9 лет назад
Steven Smith Well... I don't think most British people think like you and I am absolutely sure that the UK's political doesn't as well. Of course there's Farage's famous "charisma of a damp rag", but there's also Thatcher's "we want our money back", not taking into account that the UK (and the City in particular) benefited immensely from the european construction and gave it its main orientation, namely the liberal shift of the 70s-80s. Not to forget as well that the worst idea of the european construction, the great enlargement, which happened way too soon and without a sufficiant political union in the EU, comes from the UK. And there is a reason for it. The UK's strategy since they entered the EU has always been to keep the EU as weak as possible. Any progress towards federalism is always swiftly rejected by the UK. Myself, like most believers of the european project, I am tired to wait for the Brits to change their minds and become reasonable. Again, to me it has nothing to do with hatred towards the UK, I love England and I visited it plenty of times (never been to Scotland or Wales though, but I hear it's very nice). But visibly your people don't want the EU. If they don't undestand that nothing other than agriculture and financial profits is made in England, we can't spend more decades trying to explain to you guys why you're wrong. Of course, in the final analysis with such a deindustrialised country, the only outcome from the departure of the UK from the EU would be an almost absolute enfeoffment to the US, since the threat of blocking euro transfers to the City is more than dangerous for the UK. But at some point we have to stop wasting our time on countries who don't want to move forward. The EU is at a time of crisis, mostly because of its bad economic choices (liberal choices, imposed mainly by Germany and England but weirdly enough also by France who clearly doesn't benefit from them) and its apathy (reinforced by a few countries like the UK or the Netherlands who often actively participate in the lack of european initiative). For both these issues, the rest of Europe would clearly benefit from a departure of the UK.
@stevensmith3206
@stevensmith3206 9 лет назад
MrDimibanez Well we are having a referendum in 2017 I think so you may get your wish then. Personally I think we need to stay in but become less self-centered. Some of us want to turn the EU into the new British Empire, but I think the EU needs more power and individual countries should have less.

Now Americans go around pretending that we won WW2 for the helpless people of Europe. Is your perspective all that different? All I'm saying is, don't repeat a trend that causes dissonance, start a trend that leads us invariably back to mutual cooperation. We can obviously learn so much from France. After all, we destroyed our cultural heritage from the outset in a desperate attempt to free ourselves from British rule. We have a cultural vacuum and France has more culture in one city than we have in our entire country. But can the people of France please admit that maybe there are some positive trends that have come about as a result of our disentanglement with the gravity of the old world?

I never was anti-French. I had a wonderful time there (three weeks) visiting my sister who taught over there at the University level. My family also knew a French guy we visited with and his family. One thing not mentioned is that they enjoy excellent unemployment benefits . The average French person I met on the street, shops was helpful, but then again I tried to speak French not demand they know my language esp. since when I went a lot of German tourists were around speaking German so which language besides French should everyone there know ? There also were people of other nationalitiies besides German & English speaking so see it starts getting complicated. True the big banks, tourist places etc. had some rude people , but then again maybe the tourists were getting on their nerves, like the bozos that used flash photography despite all the multiple language signs posted prohibiting it,for a pic of the Mona LIsa. I've met rude people here in this country at those places too while speaking my native language of English.

It is a pity nobody has asked Mr. Maher yet on whether he was willing to pay the astronomical French taxes (75% (not 85%) for the greatest earners). And what for? For that thousands of Mrs. Muhammads can get free gynecology surveilance throughout her 11th pregnancy as well, just like all the former ones, free treatment in hospital while giving birth and afterwards, generous childcare allowance for not weeks but years, never mind she has never paid one EUR in taxes yet, though she is well above 40. Neither did her husband... Mr. Depardieu has already fled that Paradise, you know, alongside with quite a number of French people who used to be the elite.

I'm French, and I don't think our health care system is betten than yours (USA). French people just see the fact that in France everybody can be treated for anything for "free", while in the USA everybody must pay a lot of money for treatment. The truth is our health care system indept us A LOT, more and more every years, so it's obvious it's gonna end someday. I'm glad I can enjoy it, maybe my children will be able to enjoy it, maybe their children, but it's gonna end someday and it will be replaced by austerity, to pay back all the money that was spent.

Before, I never had no health problems so i could not speak. All i have to say, i'm a jewellery maker. I am self imployed and some times. i just would not make enough money to pay for an insurance in USA. Here in France, I pay 64 euros and i'm totally satisfied with it. My point was they played the very Big Role in Defeating Nazis.Its not about a good leadership. By the time Americans opened the second front, Russians were very well into Poland.

France is a much cleaner country than I remember years ago, rubbish on the road sides, abandoned cars, dirty public toilets etc. Now we see recycling bins in all towns and villages, wide use of street placed electric car rental, solar panel heating etc, in my village alone our council use small electric trucks. One reason France has clean air is because of their limited use of fossil fuel fired electric power stations.

Frenchman here. What Maher said about France is mostly corect, but you're right, Germany is a lot greener than France. Much greener. This drives me mad, BTW. This is because we have a very powerful nuclear lobby as we're the #1 country in nuclear industry. Germany have gone green with solar panels We do have the best health care system in the world, that's correct. Also, our poverty rate is indeed low - lower than Germany - but not the lowest in the world.

Everybody has a "Vitale" card providing 70% free healthcare for the majority of diseases. The 30% left is private insurance that 80% of the people can afford. There's a problem with the 20% without private complement insurance. But in France if you get a sudden emergency health problem, hosptital will take care of you, regardless of your insurance or lack of.

The problem with France was not that they didn't get onboard with the war in Iraq. The problem is that France agreed with the USA aka the Bush administration on the cause to go for war to Iraq. They agreed that Iraq/the Saddam Hussein administration should not be allowed to own nuclear weapons. France condemned Iraqi efforts to get nuclear armed in unison with the United States, yet they refused to go for war.

Just have to note that turnout is not counted the same way in France and America. In France we compare it to the total of register voters when in America it is compared to the total population over 18. This mathematically comes up a French turnout like 30 points ahead of the US. But in reality the difference is not that wide. I think France only has a turnout about 5 to 10 points ahead of the US. We also have some non register voters, but of course since we don’t include them in the turnout data, our turnout looks great 😅 Still a great fan of Bill Maher though, his jokes do not get old 😅

everyone gets healthcare because everyone needs it at some point (vaccines, accidents, disease, etc). if you don't attend school, chances are you won't be getting a job that provides a high level income which is subject to high taxes so don't worry about that. Also, the notion that we only pay taxes for services we receive is absurd; people who don't ever receive unemployment compensation pay into those programs.
