Because he wasn't on "Freestyler" by Bomfunk MC. If he had a feature on that track and put a crack a lack in that track, as Tony would say, I'm pretty sure he would have made it on here. That's just how good Freestyler by Bomfunk MC is.
@@brandonayong5823I think the reason fantano wasnt mad at the list is because he looked if billboards picks make sense on a top 50 list instead of the order of the picks themself. I mean who would put Nicki minaj and Drake over ghost face killah? For best rapper?
I realize Doom was born in the UK but he lived most of his life in the US. Are they not considering him a US rapper? I also think Lupe should make the list. Big Boi is so underrated. He needs to be here too. I feel like Prodigy deserves it too or conserve space and just put Mobb Deep. I know its only 50 spots and someone has to be left off but I think they should be here.
Guru shoulda 100%, not even given a second thought, been on this list. What Gang Starr did for rap and for the culture is undeniable, lead alone Guru's ability as a rapper purely by itself.
The other day I was doing bench presses at the gym, but I just wasn't feeling it. My form was sloppy and I felt weaker than usual. I had headphones in and I started to play NAV. NAV starts with, "Your whip is like a toilet you're looking like poop in it". Next thing I know I'm doing bench presses EASY like I'm lifting a toothpick. I took a quick look around to see if anyone was noticing. To my surprised everyone had a panicked and disturbed look on their faces. As NAV sang, "These pussies acting like some toilets, wanna take my shit." Some girl pointed behind me. Turns out my sleeve had gotten snagged on the wall behind me and I was lifting the entire building approximately 2-3 inches. I chuckled, then looked to the sky, as NAV begins singing, it was as if he was trying to perfectly describe the present moment. "I grab that ass she call me a perv. Open the legs so I had to insert"
no big L, no Mobb Deep, no Cypress Hill, no KRS-1, no Big Daddy Kane. This list tried to pay hommage to all eras of rap, and in doing so it forgot a lot of the great MCs
Kanye is 11 and Nicki is 10, ok has Nicki made The College Dropout, Late Registration, Graduation, 808s & Heartbreak, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Watch The Throne, Cruel Summer, Yeezus, The Life Of Pablo, ye, KIDS SEE GHOSTS, JESUS IS KING and Donda????
Bro to not see MF Doom, Tyler, Earl Sweatshirt, Lupe, Slick Rick, Big Boi, or Joey was criminal. But Dre, 50, and Future get nods. Like Waka said, “okay…”
No Prodigy, Big Boi, Slick Rick, JID, Doom, Raekwan, GZA, Royce da, Lupe Fiasco. Any of those could have been on this list to replace quite a few people.
No DOOM always makes me sad. Been listening to Vaudeville again recently and I still get surprised by his rhymes on tracks. Dude just was from another universe.
Ive never agreed more with Anthony ever before by him saying "Black on Both Sides" is one of the best hip hop albums of all time. Easily in my top 3 listen to it daily since that album came out.
@@paulmcdougald4953 while maybe not every single day but at least 5 times a week. It's the first album i listen to at work. It gets me so pumped up lol
A rapper from Black Thought’s generation that is aging better than him is Ghostface. Twelve Reasons to die is still one of the greatest concept albums in hip hop of the last decade and deserves way more praise. Sour Soul was also amazing in its simplicity of him rapping over jazz tracks by BBNG. These two projects are way too overlooked for someone who’s best years are behind him.
There's a lot of egregious snubs here (No Slick Rick? No Kool G Rap? No Big L? No MF Doom? No Gza or Raekwon?), but the single biggest omission for me is Prodigy of Mobb Deep. He's forever GOATED off The Infamous alone.
Per Billboard: "The Billboard and Vibe editorial teams opted first to limit the rap arena to North America. So for example, as estimable as his career is, British rapper Slick Rick isn’t on this list." That's probably what kept DOOM off the list as well.
Kinda sucks that Big Boi gets left out of the conversation so often. He stood toe to toe with 3 stacks on every album. My 2 favorite rappers for sure. Also no Doom or Juicy J/DJ Paul in the top 50 is nuts.
I think Macs variation of music from happy teenager to stressed adult was amazing. I see him definitely touching top 20 because of all the teens including myself during the high school years that he touched with his music. He also had some 🔥 aux songs. And Faces, Swimming, and Watching movies are classics of the 2010's era of rap.
I didn't think he was going to say Mac Miller, then he said Mac Miller. I was so happy. It is an absolute catastrophe that he died. It was totally avoidable. And now we will never get new beautiful music from Malcolm.
Hieroglyphics!! Souls of Mischief!! Hieroglyphics Imperium the greatest rap group of all-TIME!! Hieroglyphics was a 7 member collective and Souls of Mischief were 4 of those 7. Their albums: Souls of Mischief- 93' til Infinity Hieroglyphics - Third Eye Vision Souls of Mischief- Conflict, Climax, Resolution Hieroglyphics - Full circle I challenge ANY rapper/group to put 3 let alone 4 of their albums that are better. SOULS took intrumentals and lyricism to a whole other level. In fact Andre 3000 and Eminem back in the 90's used to talk to nerd out over the phone gushing about how good SOM/HIERO was.
@@Tylericous it was crazy. Black brought the knowledge. The hook from Q tip was amazing and Best Em verse I heard in years too. His list at the end of his verse was better than the billboard list 😂😂😂
There would be no Migos, Cardi B., Lil Baby, Gunna, Da Baby, Pop Smoke or A Boogie wit da Hoodie if there was no Future. The greatest error of this list is Future not being in the top 5. No one over the past decade has had a greater impact on the music than Future.
I think rap in general has gone through so much growth and change over its history that it’s insanely difficult to limit a greatest list to just 50 artists ever. Each generation of rappers you could probably make a top 50 of and still leave some people off.
I thought the list was barely okay but the fact big boi wasn’t on it and Rick Ross got a spot was crazy. Sure he’s not as good as André but he’s just as vital and almost equally as skilled
Your comment was the most intelligent and insightful comment on greatest list in music sports or anything else almost because it's always the greatest of that period of time and people don't take into account how things have changed I personally think in basketball players in the '50s and '60s and '70s should be considered greater because they did it first and players from the '80s '90s and on had to learn from those earlier players and how to even play the game
I’m personally not that disappointed with Tyler not being on this list, seeing as he has been very consistent in not wanting to be regarded as a rap artist specifically in his comment on his issues with the urban/rap category of the Grammys during his interview in which he won a Grammy for Igor for the best rap album, even though he himself said it wasn’t a rap album. So while he does deserve recognition with all of the influence and recognition he’s gained and contributed to the hip hop game in recent years, I don’t think that recognition should come from this list for his sake. But yeah, no slick Rick, no doom, no de la soul cuts or another wu tang cut was a bummer from this list. Also to anyone saying JID should’ve been on this list, he needs some time to grow still. Just let him cook for a bit.
I dont think thats what he was saying tho... He disparaged the Grammys having an "urban" category due to how obviously condescending (and potentially racist) that is but hes no doubt a hip hop artist that deserves to be recognized among others
@@saeedbaig4249 he’s not top 50 skill level. Plus, if he got his way and rap was thrown in with the pop genre. Rappers would get bodied by Beyoncé Taylor Swift BTS Etc. it would make it really hard for rappers to ever win. I think Rap should stay having its own category just drop the urban part. Also, give RnB its own category too.
@@jeriji6592 give him half a decade longer of work similar to what he’s putting out and I’m sure most would agree he’s top 50. He’s just too new to add to one just yet
There’s a lot of old school artists that are on this list and rightfully so… but the fact that Kool G Rap isn’t on this list is absolutely ridiculous to me
Del The Funkee Homosapien is criminally underrated. Hieroglyphics Imperium amoung the greatest rap groups of all-TIME along with Wu-Tang!! Those 2 groups are basically the pinacle of rap. The next list is ranking De La Soul albums weakest to greatest! Since your channel is influential and your reviews/breakdowns are in-depth this would serve as a guide and deep dive for the uninitiated.
I’d actually have Ludacris higher.. his delivery and flow aged one of the best in this time than nearly all rappers of his era.. I think he was a good mix of having a commercial run and well respected in the underground community
No Big L, Guru, Kool G Rap, Prodigy, Inspectah Deck, GZA, Grand Puba or Cam'ron in a Top 50 of ALL TIME is absolutely insane... You could EASILY replace Dre, Rick Ross. E-40, Luda and Future with any of these picks.
Sorry this late, just saw the comment, you are right about drake, but man nicki and lil Wayne are Beastsss ,dont know why you underestimate them, especially nicki when she could hold her own against anyone ,as she has shown up to this day,✌
GTBSB/SBE og erasure, Drain has been a contemporary powerhouse for the passed few yrs sure, but can't forget what started it, especially since guys like Leandoer stay innovating. Gotta also hand it to Chief Keef for being a key player in opening up that soundcloud/cloudrap/mumble/sadboy era lane as well.
I think part of the listing has to come with the fact that the 50 artists mentioned had their music charted well with Billboard. So, if they took the stats of how many songs landed on top 100, and how many weeks they stayed on Billboard - that might factor a great amount of why the chose these 50 artists. Unfortunately MF DOOM and Zev Love X (KMD)'s music weren't the type that chart on Billboard.

@@Habeev07 - I agree with you, but, unfortunately Billboard is not going to be the institution that's going to list Hiero, Boot Camp Clik (Sean Price not there, WTF), emcee like Tragedy Khadafi or Kool G Rap who inspired how ppl rap. The list, in no disrespect to the artists - is pretty much a list on "how to introduce someone to rap music in each decade since it started to become more commercially viable."
Tyler I feel would fit best on that list with Dre of "Top artists in hip hop" in terms of the fact that neither are rappers (Dre not writing his stuff and Tyler not rapping at all on a lot of material) and if said list was made I think both would be very high up.
I would have put her in number 50. It is amazing how she puts out a good or decent song or a great verse in a feature with one of the greatests and in the next song she just goes back to very stupid annoying lyrics that in order to erase them out of my head I have to go listen to a whole Lupe, MF Doom. Little Simz or Black Thought album

Kinda shocked at your Mac Miller shout out despite your review scores, but I'm always happy to hear love thrown his way. Man was a genuinely amazing person and a good rapper
He would have been one of the goats by the time he retired. He lost everything really at the point he was fulfilling his potential. Had his career been longer, top 50 for sure for sure. Same with Tyler, Tyler's career just needs to be longer.
Think his problem is mac Miller never really had like a major hit albums apart from his last 2. But if you look at his overall discography you could make like 2 classic albums out his music easily.
While I am excited that common got included when he normally gets missed No Talib kweli , no dell the funky homosapien, no Lupe these are big Misses for me if we going by skill lvl

As much as I aggree. There are still way too many artists that could have made it as well like stated no DOOM , no Beasty boys, no Tyler. 50s impact can’t be forgotten both in his prime and now. 50 and G Unit dominated a good 3 years at least over everyone from 2003-2006 so his impact then can’t be argued with. Nowadays, how many bars reference a classic 50 lyric/song? How many artists are there especially in the drill genre that 50 influenced majorly? (Pop Smoke, Fivio Foreign, a lot of UK Drill artists) His impact now is similar to artists like Rakim, Eminem, Nas, Jay Z, Kanye, Lil Wayne on the generations after them. Although he doesn’t have the pen and the skill of those artists (bar probably Kanye but his discography>50s) his chorus game is unmatched which can’t be understated given a good chorus leads to commercial success and sometimes makes songs iconic. He’s on my top 50 but I understand leaving him off. GROTD and The Massacre are two good albums as well as his mixtape runs being so influential for mixtapes.
