We discuss the Bills newest additions, safety Mike Edwards and defensive end Casey Toohill, as well as their new COO Pete Guelli. Then it's time to answer mailbag questions!
Best: Bruce Smith, Jim Kelly, Josh Allen, OJ Simpson Worst: Tom Cousineau (1st overall!), Mike Williams(4th overall), Aaron Maybin(11th), Tony Hunter(12th)
I still think there is a need at Safety though. Both Rapp and Edwards are similar type of players. They need a free roaming safety that can play boundary to boundary. They will never be able to run 1 high. Though I do think Babich and Mcdermott could make Edwards a All Pro
As an aside, I don't think you can count Cousineau. He opted for the CFL after his initial post draft meeting with Bills mgt. He claims he was disrespected. When he came back to the NFL, he was traded to the Browns for their 1st rd pick in the "83 draft. We took Kelly with that pick. Cousineau was a decent backer for the Browns...some call him a journeyman.
Bust list: Walt Patulski (no1 overall and AL Cowlings (no 5) overall. They probably could have got Cowlings in the 3rd, but O.J. threatened to leave if the Bills didn't take his wingman.
What happened with the compensatory pick being in a later round. I think most people who knew the formula thought we would receive a third round pick. Thanks and I love your show!
They took 2 unknowns in poyer and Hyde in the beginning and made them pro bowlers. They don't need a big name safety. The whole point of this off-season has been getting the cap right. Why on earth would they not train someone with the tools that hasn't made it as a starting player yet?
Suggesting to take a safety in the first round is CRAZY...especially over a WR. Secondly, I disagree on Damar Hamlin just being a special teams player. He's played in a lot of games in his career and has played well.
While I agree that they shouldn’t draft a Safety in the first… it might be a good idea to take one in the second or trade up into the third for one. Drafting a WR in the first round is a wasted pick for multiple reasons. For one, it isn’t likely that a WR with the required skill set to replace Diggs will be left on the board. Secondly, if they draft a traditional X, big body boundary receiver, he isn’t going to have a significant impact on the offense. And there are multiple reasons why a WR isn’t likely to have an impact. First of all this EP offense is extremely difficult for WR’s to learn and secondly Josh Allen rarely targets the X boundary receiver. Davis, Sanders and Brown were all the least targeted receivers on the team. Allen starts 90% of his reads with Diggs and rarely gets past the Y in his progressions, before he either scrambles or throws the ball. The slot receiver has always been the 2nd most targeted receiver in this offense with Josh Allen. It makes zero sense to use a first round pick on a WR that will be lucky to get 40-50 targets all season, unless that WR is capable to be groomed to replace Diggs eventually.
The hate I elam🤦♂️ he hasn't even started his career yet. Forget torell Troup instead of drafting Rob Gronkowski, also no to Keon Coleman, that just bringing a gabe davis back. But do want a reciver either in round 1 or 2, need a down field threat, we don't have one right now that can be consistent and need to think about future for when diggs leaves
