Yes, it’s an era that is gone forever. Now we have to endure lightweights hosting the Oscars, and they push their shallow politics at every opportunity, because they have so little talent.
I love Billy Crystal. Born to entertain!!! So incredibly talented. Imagine having the guts, nerve, confidence to sing, dance, do somersaults, and tell jokes in front of a room full of entertainers and the whole country. “Come here, you big mayor, you.” Lol.
@@hugohuysmans9666 The whole bit was pretty much clean cut but you want to nitpick on a little jab that's not even worth an argument. So again, grow up.
the problem is the overall class of the nation has diminished. people dont want this anymore. they wouldnt even understand the humor. and some have become so sensitive you cant mention them anymore.
Crystal's magic was his EASE. He owns the stage as if he's doing a small pub in Culver City, but he's doing THE event with ALL the stars looking directly at him. Amazing.
hey, nichts gegen Culver City, die haben dort Aldi markt, so dass ihre leute nicht sterben müssen in den strassen, pricewise, incomewise, no matter wht colour. courtesy frm the ppl who brought you, computer, jetplanes, undetectable Uboot, wirless mobile communication (sa frollein hedwig kiesler), man on the moon etc. . ihr seid richtig, tut einfach so als wenn es diesen verdammten braun nie gegeben hätte, James Webb, HaHaHaHaHaHa... sorry yr ppl had to study german language, to grasp german guide books, to know, whats going on.
11:57 I don't think I've ever seen Clint Eastwood beam with enjoyment like he did through this bit. Looked he was having the best Christmas of his life - he actually made little happy noises....
Billy Crystal was a class act. Good, wholesome humor which is lacking in today's comedienne's potty mouth and vulgarity. If the Academy brought him back I'm sure more people would tune in.
I think the trend is very different now. Where in his era subtle remarks were the trend now it's more about shock value of some vulgar remarks. Either way both are effective if delivered by talented people.
IN BILLY CRYSTAL'S OWN WORDS - “I had nine wonderful experiences for me, some better than the others,” he said. “But most of them were really wonderful experiences, to host a show and be funny and keep the audience awake, both at home and in the audience. It’s a tough gig, because when I first started, there were three critics - that, if you cared about critics, there were three that you paid attention to - which was Tom Shales in The Washington Post, Janet Maslin in The New York Times, and Howard Rosenberg in The LA Times. They were all top notch. Now there’s 2 billion critics, and they press ‘send’ right away.
Absolutely brilliant. The Oscars are not the same anymore. Billy Chrystal magnificent entertainer. I’m watching this in 2020. All the stars who have now left us. Clint Eastwood is 90 now. Jack Nicholson wonderful. I wish the Oscars would come back like they were. Sad.
I must've been living under a rock because i just found this guys. Better late than never. What a great entertainer Billy is. Also Al Pacino so gorgeous here.
Billy Crystal’s performance is great but can we all just acknowledge how amazing 1993 was in the movie department? The Unforgiven, Howard’s End, Carlito’s Way, A Few Good Men, Basic Instinct, .. All in one year. Man I miss the 90’s!
Back when Hollywood was full of creative minds and not the morons who can only come up with superheroes, reboots, prequels, and sequels... What a time to have been able to go to the movies, now you're lucky if you get a couple of good ones per year
This is the Oscars for the movies of 1992. Scent of a Woman was released in 1992 along with the others you mentioned with the exception of Carlito's Way. Carlito's Way was released in 1993.
Billy Crystal is the best Oscar´s Host of all times, this is one of this guys that always have funny stories to tell, he´s a genious getting the full attention of the audience, everybody wants to have a friend like Billy.
Billy Crystal is great! I saw him back in 1980 when he wasn't as popular in his comedy skit with several other actors that are not as popular anymore. Amazing what careers either go forward or crash.
Billy is so so wonderful. When he begins the medley everytime you just stop what you're doing and listen and laugh. He actually makes it into what an oscar show is suppose to be. Mixing tradition with history & contemporary wit. Nowadays I just go to bed and wake up the next morning to see results on youtube. If Billy hosts I will stay up all night to watch in it's entirety.
+PAUL JAFFA That is an excellent post Paul, accurate in every way, I have currently got City Slickers running as I type this. Billy has just pulled the calf out of the dying cow. The scene where he tentatively plays the harmonica while Jack sings "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" is just great. RIP Jack.
He and I share a hometown and we are so very proud of HIM. I wish I had been a student of his in junior high. Check out his eulogy of his great friend, Mohammad Ali. Sensitive, heartfelt and funny. I don’t think anyone else could have done better. A salute to you, Mr. Crystal. LB loves you.
Oh man! Billy is really in his element here. I"m currently reading his Still Foolin' 'Em for the second time and just had to have more Billy. There's no one like him.
Danielchai S Yes,She is for family values. She has a family. Traditional is in the eye of personal opinion. But since you were implying that she is untraditional, how does that affect her legacy of being one of the best living actresses today? It does not.
Yes, wow!!! I never saw this in 1996, was it?! So great to be able to see this now!! I just love and adore Billy Crystal!!! I think he’s one of the funniest men alive, or dead! What a great guy the Academy got to be the host of the Academy Awards! So multi talented, with his singing and dancing and his jokes, etc., etc.!!! Thank you very much, Billy and others!
I remember watching this and I was reminded of the topics of the time, like Kim Basinger owning a town. Jack Palance followed up his one-armed push-ups from the year before.
Billys line about Jack wearing sunglasses inside all the time because his star luster gets in his eyes.. is too funny. Billy Crystal was a great host compared to the crap we have these days.
BC says he didn't really enjoy all these hosting gigs. But we sure did, and even years later will watch them again. Thank you for being so entertaining. Sometimes time with you is just what's needed. Can't say why, just is.

We're getting well into the 2000s now where looking back nearly 30 years these opening acts are becoming legendary. Big Jack, Clint and Al all up for awards sitting in the front row. And the magical Billy Crystal who possibly only 2nd to the great Bob Hope was Oscar's greatest presenter. In the modern era he was No1.
Billy is genuinely one of the most likeable actors and comics ever. I can watch anything he's in or does just because it's him. I enjoy reading his books because I can hear his voice in my head
Thank you for putting this here. I watched the event but I'd love to see them all again! PS....AND THIS IS WHY BILLY MAKES THE BIG BUCKS........................... as was Jack Palance for doing that cute entry with his "Geeerrring" (listen to it) Jack died at 87, 2006. I got the chance to work with Billy on "Mr. Saturday Night" as a Bowler...he was so handsome.
The Oscar Host gig is tough, where the host has to be ironic and funny, yet with a populist appeal so he/she doesn’t alienate the viewers, and also somehow be okay with both treacle and Hollywood showiness. Billy’s uniquely able to cover all those bases.
What a class act. The Oscars is for the stars and whatever we think about their politics or their private lives, the Oscars is for them. Billy understood this and poked them with gentle humor and honored their craft with his respect.
So nice to see this. Helping me recover from garden variety virus up in kern river valley. Not COVID. I’m elderly. In 2021 and watching old billy crystal video helps.
