I saw Billy in concert one time. Christie wasn’t there, but he announced it was her birthday and dedicated Uptown Girl to wish her happy that night. I was heavily pregnant at that show, and my baby turns 40 this year. Lord, where have the years gone?
I saw him with floor seats in 1986 when he still had hair and they were still together. 3 hour show with no intermission except for the 3 encores. The tour where he opened the show with "A Matter of Trust" playing the guitar. Incredible show indeed!
I saw him once in the late 80s, with my ex-sister-in-law, when my baby was about 3. Regarding where the time went, mine went to great times with family and a lot of laughing and happy memories ~ and I wouldn’t trade for anything. I hope it’s the same for you.
It's a magic trick, honestly. I was thinking the same thing yesterday. We can travel into the future, that's how I feel. Unfortunately, we can't go back, as the saying goes. BTW, we are the lucky ones, that have traveled, and God willing, will continue for a while longer.
Billy was supposed to perform in Hershey Pa….but 3 Mile Island happened and the concert was cancelled. But he did come back and our seats were “behind the stage”. As it turned out they were right behind the band. We sat right behind the drummer and his (Billy’s) piano…He actually came up and played and sang right to us. We could see Christie standing in the stage door dancing. My daughter and I had the privilege of seeing him at Madison Square Garden for his 75th performance there. And we were treated to the remaining member of ZzTop come on stage to perform with Billy.
Nice to see two adults get along on one level when the other level didn't work out. That's probably why their daughter seems relatively normal for that world.
1986 saw him in concert. She was there standing right by the stage dancing and Billy sang to her❤️ Hands down Billy is one of the best live performers and it was one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to! Great memories ❤️
A great 'feel good' pop song from the past, a great artist, and the story behind it all, gives me a wonderful feeling...a feeling of 'hope', in an often confusing world. And yes.... all from a fun 'song'. Thanks Billy (you too Christy)!
I have seen Billy 7 times over the years. The energy he preforms with is probably only second to Bruce. I never felt he gave less than his all. Pro tip- see him in Philly and you will hear Captain Jack live.
BILLY JOEL is UNBELIEVABLY TALENTED. GREAT Entertainer (i've seen him in concert several times), PROLIFIC & PHENOMENAL Songwriter, & just an ALL AROUND GREAT GUY!!
Billy Joel's album, "The Stranger" got me through 2 years of boarding school. That and a tape of Robin William's first comedy album. I literally wore out both cassette tapes. I graduated in 1980 which is 44 years ago. It blows my mind that it's been that long ago.
way back in 1990 I saw Billy Joel at a benefit concert and Christie briefly danced onstage. She should gave done the same in that video. (Concerts for the Baymen at Jones Beach)
@@Granto-ni9qwNo, I’m pretty sure it’s about his then wife Christine. If it’s about his other girlfriend, then why was she in his music video back in the 80s?
@@traydaniel0403 It was actually written for model Elle Macpherson, whom he dated prior to Christie. However, by the time the album came out and the song became popular, he was already dating Christie. That's why she's in the video and people think its about her.
I have only seen him in concert once during the Storm Front Tour of 1990. I remember when he did a back flip off the Baby Grand Piano. So cool! I know he cannot do that now but still puts on a great show from what I see here and on the CBS show a few weeks ago at MSG.
Love Billy So Great So Talented Great Musician Great Dad Saw Him 3x in Concert N Enjoyed Every Moment of His Concerts Ate So Great n So Is He👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🎹🎹🎹🎙🎙🎙🎤🎶🎵🎵🎼🎙❤🤗
I know he stopped performing this song for a time after his divorce from her. Glad he started singing this song again. He has so many hits he could skip it and his song lineup did not suffer but it is still is one of the classic songs he wrote earlier in his career. The fact he still sang it this month when she was there means that time has healed most of the wounds from that time in his life.
Not sure about this but I've heard he put it back in his set when Olivia Rodrigo mentioned it in one of her songs and then joined him onstage to do it.
@@saran3214 I never said anything about cheating. In fact, it was widely reported at the time this happened that neither had done that. The problem was two fold. 1) Billy Joel still had to tour frequently to make money, which wore on their relationship as she rarely traveled with him 2) She wanted to move to the west coast, and he did not. They stayed friendly for the sake of their daughter Alexis Ray. Note that Christine Brinkley has married multiple times, had a daughter with her next marriage, and none of them lasted. Neither is perfect by any measure but Brinkley seems to not have patience in having a relationship with anyone for a long period of time.
I was luck Uri...back in the early 80's when I got a seat behind the stage like that, and it was at the last minute they added more room for more tickets...and got some great shots!...something you never forget!...thanks!
Well joe Biden, Justin Trudeau, thank them and the loser government. It’s all their fault who else is it really? Most of us mind our buisness and live our lives. That’s all on the government, they don’t take any accountably
If only Biden and Obama would leave America alone NOW. Press conference NOW, admitting the deliberate damage they have done, agree to the heavy charges and leave in handcuffs.
I really don't have many nor live for random celebrity sightings except for my first - me 13th row at McCartney's Flowers in the Dirt tour MSG, I think late '89. About 20 minutes in, in walk into the 11th row: Sarah Brightman, Andrew Lloyd Weber, Christie in a skin tight one piece blue knit dress and Billy in a light brown suit. Much as I wanted to be glued to JPM, I couldn't take my eyes off Christie wriggling around nonstop. What a goddess. They all left along with one other I assumed a business manager before the end of the show I figured to go backstage. Sarah was quite lovely too, much more subdued but I think into it singing along at times. I've no anecdotes about it, but a memorable event all told, with Paul putting on an incredible 3hr concert
I would love to see him in concert again. I’ve been a humungous fan since 1980. I was 5. The first time was 1994 with Elton John. As a teen I had a choice of The Eagles or Billy Joel and Elton John. Not that I would have chosen differently I loved all three but I kind of wish I’d gone to see The Eagles too.
Look at the beginning of the video as he goes to the left he points at her she is wearing a blue top and her daughter Sailor is dressed in red dancing with her.

Super cool but also this angle - I know many performers who have used lyric support in various ways but suprised he is using tele prompters. I think it is cool - remembering lyrics is hard even if he wrote the song. Neat.
Elle MacPherson. He talked about it in an interview with Howard Stern. It was actually about her and her friends, including Brinkley, and was called "Uptown Girls". When he broke up with MacPherson and started dating Brinkley, he changed it to be just about her.
I love that he can perform this song without any issues but- just the way you are- is a big miss for him, written for another woman. I wonder what the difference is :) One is fun and the other far to personal, I adore the song, the message the melody the voice that is BJ. He really is an American Treasure
I think her singing and carrying on about a song written for her takes away from it. Saw him @ the Bridge tour in 86. Great show. He’s not doing backflips of his piano any more.
Joel has talked about this song several times on Howard Stern. The song is about Brinkley. But, she wasn't the inspiration. He was dating model Elle MacPherson when he started writing it. It was called "Uptown Girls" (plural) and was about her and her friends (including Brinkley). When he broke up with MacPherson and started dating Brinkley, he changed it to be just about her.
I saw him with Elton John but he was going through his divorce from Christie so Elton sang the hits from the Innocent Man album and he sang some of Elton John’s songs instead. Still a great show!
Not to be one of those "Well actually..." people, but although this song is generally associated with Christie Brinkley, the original inspiration was Elle Macpherson, who Billy was dating when he first started writing it. This was just before he started dating Christie. FYI
So many many comments with everyone saying how many times they’ve seen him in concert, everyone is multiple times seeing him with nothing bad to say! That’s awesome! I’ve never seen him……. But would! ♥️x
