Yea, just saw Billy was a cheater. Watched King of Kong for first time just a couple mins ago. Was CRAZY that Steve had top do it live then Billy sent in a video. Like, HELLO, in what world is that fair!?

So Steve's recording is clearly from a camera and Billy's is a VCR recording. They made a big deal about the source of Steve's arcade board and if it was modified, but no mention of how Billy recorded his machine? As far as i know, these machines do not have a composite video output for direct connection to a normal VCR or TV set.

They're both awesome and they have different styles, that's the beauty of it.

Following all this Billy cheating on MAME, you can see a clear difference between the two in this video. The left appears so polished or as it can be, and the one on the right looks so rough that it has to be authentic. I am not sure why no one did not notice this far earlier.

I can't understand why Billy sent such a questionable tape to show his highest score. It made him look really bad in my opinion. Made it look like he cheated.

Just watched King of Kong, and my question is: how did billy record this? You can see the reflection from the screen in Wiebe's video, and it's also shot at a bit of an angle; so it's obvious he's at a machine playing the game. Billy's looks like it was recorded straight from a TV or something--there's no angle or screen reflection. How did he do that?

Every time Billy's videotape blurrs it reminds me of that movie Speed where the tape was looped and the villain didn't realize it for a few hours and got tricked. I guess that Billy Mitchell played fair on that tape because cheating would build a huge guilt he would have to carry for the rest of the life but it was kinda sick when Steve beat the record on display and Billy delivered that tape claiming an even bigger record and Steve wasn't even allowed to watch it himself. But it doesn't matter anymore, because Steve now holds both records for display and tape highscore, combined with his many other skills and family dedication makes him a truly good person.

I respect Billy for his past scores but Steve is a better player now.

Look at closely at 3:39 and 3:41 closely on the "Rivet Board" stage. At 3:39 when Billy wins, the girders go to the bottom without any falling animation. I am not a expert in this, but from what I understand this is a known M.A.M.E. artifact. At 3:41 when Steve wins, there is a frame showing the girders falling, which is how the origional arcade hardware worked. To find this means going back and forth several times using RU-vid's controls or downloading it and going over it on a player that has frame-by-frame advance.

Steve's run is definitely legit.

Actually a pretty awesome movie.

But Billy saves his game frequently. This affords him the ability to maximize his barrel points on every level, fully risk-free. Steve is legitimately playing on an arcade machine, all in a single take. No comparison.

Actually the comment of the top where you can jump and jump for 100 points at a time is standing 1 pixel away from DK and jump and jump I do it all the time.

Billy was caught using an emulator, so his gameplay footage is null and void.

Just looked up the current record out of curiosity. Wiebe's highest score is 1700 above Michell's, and they both last submitted scores in 2010. However, they are currently ranked 11th and 12th, and the no 1 high score is 1,218,000 points by Wes Copeland last year.

Steve is a gent, but anyone who can play DK to this level is ridic.

Looking at this footage i can hardly can believe that billy mitchell became a scalper.

I'm so glad that Steve was vindicated. I remember when they tried to say the movie was fabricated, that Billy wasn't ACTUALLY a total asshole and cheat -- yet I said: "He is NOT that good of an actor, he really DOES suck that hard."

i just wanted to point out the fact that the constant bonus is a clock talk, and the you can't just hang around and get points, billy mitchell did at the very beginning, the bonus hits 000 and he still gets 100 points for jumping over barrels before climbing up the ladder. jumps over 2 barrels actually, gets points while the bonus reads 000.

At 3:41 even in this video you can actually catch the frame where the girders make the signature arcade ladder on Steve's screen

Billy seams to be getting an unnatural number of 800 point blue barrel and firefox smashes during this game. He must be really lucky M.A.M.E. save states.

Just watched this.... Anyone ever noticed on the river board where the bonus is counting down... It's about even but near the end Billy's was 2-3 sec faster than Steve's....

560k kill screen is next to impossible. A speed run almost hit 800k and that's with no top hammer grab. Most will grab the top hammer just for the sake of safety, Really anything under 750k kill screen seems far fetched.

Steve's technique of point pressing is more effective than Billy's. At one point Steve had 7,100 and Billy has 5,800. Steve also reaches the end of the level faster.

I'm still skeptical on the Mitchell cheating claims. Part of me wants to believe that he never cheated. I would have to hear it from him to believe it.

I'm surprised so many in the comments are so ignorant about Billy's history with Donkey Kong. What you saw int he movie was edited to make Billy appear to be a villian. After the movie was released, on July 26th 2007, Billy played Donkey Kong live, and topped 1 million points, live , for the first time ever... shattering the high score once again that was set in the movie (which had already been beaten). This score was beaten soon after. On July 24th, 2010, Billy Mitchell set the world record AGAIN for Donkey Kong, live, at a local arcade in Florida. After beating that record, Live, at an arcade.... he walked over to Donkey Kong Jr. and set THE WORLD RECORD on Donkey Kong Jr. ON THE SAME DAY. Both of these scores have since been beaten... but not by the same person, and not live, on the same day, in a public arcade. All of this was in public, and shows what a phenomenal talent Billy Mitchell is. Whether you think he's a jerk or not, he is without a doubt the greatest video game player of all time. At times, he's had the world record on Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Centipede, Burgertime, Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man. Google the specifics of "King of Kong" and you'll see just how duped you've been by that film. For instance, when Steve Wiebe (who is good friends with Mitchell) got the record in the movie, Billy didn't even have the record... he'd been beaten years earlier! So the whole premise of the movie that he's fighting to retain his record is complete b.s., as are dozens of other things portrayed in the movie.

You don't need to know him. The director of the movie even said he had to paint Billy in a more flattering light or the movie would've been off-putting.
