I always's loved Billy Squier back then (and now), when he came on the radio I knew I could turn it up and enjoy a great song. Then it seems like he just disappeared. I found another video on YT explaining this video (not the song) is what killed his career. Concert attendance cut in half as soon as this went out on MTV. Seems he didn't want this getting released but the record company insisted.... As if we needed any more verification record companies don't know shit about music.
To the best of my knowledge, approximately 10 years ago, He is doing cheography.. Luv Him, miss Him, etc.. GREAT Concert.. Mr. Billy Squire & Queen.. Luv it &/or Not.. 80's..
An article in my Google News app talked about how this video killed Billy Squier's career. I'm glad that I played it because I now remember this song and how good it is. There is nothing wrong with tnis video. Its just a good lookimg guy singing and moving his heart out! Anyway, its now in my favourites playlist.
Billy actually fought to keep this video from being released, but his label overruled him and insisted on releasing it anyway. What the hell was the label thinking? Were the convinced that Billy's career would soar if only he was shown doing the worst Mick Jagger imitation in history?
@@dangreen1565 He didn't have that option...the label was basically saying they wouldn't publicize the single unless he did the video. If he'd said no, they might well have dropped him. That's how the music business works.
@@dangreen1565Music labels had massive power over their artists back then and could in deed force them to do things they didn’t want to do by threatening their careers.
😂😂😂 l saw someone mention this video in comparison to Lil Nas X Industry Baby??! Look, l am 50 so l remember Billy Squire, and l'm never going back there. Too traumatic..🤣
I listened to Billy Squier back in the 80's and still like his music. But I don't know what he was thinking when he agreed to do this video. Just a change of clothes might have saved it. All you really need are some jeans, a t-shirt, a bad ass car and a good looking chick and you have a cool video.
Hello people from the 80's, I come from the future, from 2020 to be more specific. My people can't see anything wrong with this video...we feel the world owes this rock star an apology...if you disagree with us, well I have bad news for you, people from the past, stuck in their past.
it's funny how everyone is bashing this video but says Billy is great like it was 70's 80's style it was not gay to dress in bright colors spandex big hair and act goofy in a way it was humorous and fashionable nothing but a good time... PS I would have made this video and beat tf outta anyone calling me weird or gay...
Great song, watched an interview and the record company had some idiot producer that demanded this vid and it killed Squire's career. Sad because he was good.
So this wasn't how the band presented them themselves typically? Like if Metalica suddenly dropped a Wham flavored video? Thats wild but I can see how a label would sacrfice a band to chase a market they saw as in need. Polotical plays for mass marketing dollars.
Mom walks in... Billy? I’m concerned, you tore off your shirt and put on a pink one? Are you gay? No mom, I’m just super stoned and drunk Oh thank god.
There were a lot of horrible videos back then. It was still kinda new. Yeah it's pretty goofy, but it didn't bother me at the time. I think really is that music tastes changed. He's great, but things were going a different direction with pop music, and his popularity had peaked.
The is the video that defined the term "gay". It destroyed his rep and I don't know why it was done so horribly wrong, but this was probably some Hollywood art school directors fantasy idea and Billy probably thought it was all wrong. He's still one of the greatest in spite of this ridiculous video.
I liked his songs until I seen this video air on MTV. Yes, I immediately thought he came out of the closet. The pastel pinks, the female dancing with himself. Even tho he flings a girl negligee in the air as a hint that a girl was there, I thought he was trying to come to terms with himself that he was actually gay.
So he looks a little like Richard Simmons dancing around but Kevin Bacon gets away with it in FootLoose. How does this music video kill his career? It’s still a good song.
On the positive side, Billy Squire's voice is great, reminds me of Robert Plant from LedZepplin, but yowza, this is a bad video. I was in the Navy, out at sea when this video came out, this is my first time seeing it. I'd heard this song, which is alright, but I remember really cringing hard when I heard the "Stroke Me" song; I'd always thought that "The Stroke" was what killed his career. Writing original music is hard. I can play the accordian, but I can't sing AND play at the same time, not even something simple like "Happy Birthday". So, I still really appreciate anybody who can write, play, sing, and sold millions of records, as well as concert tickets. Hmm, you'd think that during the video shoot, Billy would have checked the take, that for blocking and lighting the director would have gone over the take. I think they did and Billy thought he was coming off like Mic Jagger, there was so much awful dancing the 80's. Rock stars can not prance, it's like a law.
My god it could be this, I wish I never seen this, I always thought it was music writers block. Not a horrid display of Flashdance, I still love his music anyway.
If this does not say "I am so gay and seeking a boyfriend" I dont know what does. Great song but i will never understand why in the world they would try to make Billy into a dancer for a rock song. Very dumb idea
Hi. Mr. Billy Squire. Happy New Year Sir... Just 'chiiling w/ my 18 year old Kitty (K)at. NO, I have NOT sent any sort of "social media" 2 anyone.. Sorta' --- who am I kidding?! Not partial 2 "celebrity". Traveled a lot 4 school/luv/work/curiosity.. I would have sent Freddy Mercury/George Michael/MR. EDDIE VAN HALEN 🙏🌹🎶/ this simple text of adoration during these Very Tough Holidays/this coronovirus scare... TAKE CARE/B Well... Enough mushy stuff.. If U get a chance, watch "Mr. Bean, New Years Eve". Thank U Billy Squire, U R in my Autobiography.. 💚🙏😷🎼
Amazing song but the video ruined him...Hes such an amazing singer and performer, he fired his managers and producers but he shouldve seen this coming just by the color of pink...He shouldve said HELL NO! 🤷🏻♀️
Deserved to have his career ruined after this campy video lol! Morrissey's "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side" video with the Smith's is pure camp, but Morrissey is gay, Squire learned a tough lesson...
