I knew a family about 30 years ago. The husband & wife were first cousins. They were advised by Doctors not to have children, as it was more than possible that they would be disabled. They ignored their Doctor's advice and went ahead. First child was a daughter. She was fine on all levels. But instead of being responsible they had 4 more children, all boys. Every single one of those boys had severe intellectual disabilities. Sadly those boys also became extremely violent as they grew and became older. The saddest thing out of all this was, their eldest child was neglected mentally and emotionally. Be cause her parents were having to care for her older brothers. Now tell me that marrying your 1st Cousin is okay. It's not, it is wrong on many levels!!!!

@@AA-js8yx maybe not always, but that doesn’t mean these types of relationships are okay. There’s a REASON these relationships are banned and discouraged in modern society; sure, some couples may get lucky and have normal children, but those are the exception, rather then the rule. And if those children have children of their own (especially with their own cousins or relatives), then the problems WILL surface in their children. The problems outlined earlier may skip a generation or two In consanguineous relationships, but they ALWAYS resurface in a later generation, sometimes with a vengeance.

_The possible mandatory prohibition of consanguineous marriage apparently approved by the Drafting Committee and accepted by the ASHG Board of Directors contradicts the 1970 conclusion of the US National Conference of Commissioners that state laws banning first-cousin marriage lacked scientific foundation and should be repealed. It also is at odds with the 2002 Recommendations by the US National Society of Genetic Counselors that, other than supplemental neonatal screening by tandem mass spectrometry at one week of age and hearing screening at three months, the progeny of first-or secondcousin couples did not require additional preconception, prenatal or postnatal testing (Bennett, Motulsky et al., 2002)._ - Consanguinity in Context by Alan Bittles

"Our findings over years of research have shown that the health risks associated with consanguineous marriage have been exaggerated, largely due to flawed research design, with a failure to allow for non-genetic factors that can adversely influence health outcomes," Alan H. Bittles said. For over 90% of cousin marriages, their risk [of having a child with a genetic abnormality] is the same as it is for the general population. - Prof. Dr. Alan H. Bittles Most children from cousin marriages are healthy. The risk of having children with abnormalities is 3.7-5-7 % in general population, while for unrelated couple is 2-3%. There is an increased risk, but it's slightly higher.

_From the above, it becomes clear that the risk for consanguineous couples of having affected offspring actually consists of three different risks:_ _a. The baseline risk for all parents-to-be of having affected offspring;_ _b. The extra risk due to their consanguineous relation;_ _c. The risk from disorders already present in the family._ _Genetic counselling of consanguineous couples requires a thorough inquiry into the exact pedigree structure and the disorders in the partners and their family - both common and separate branches._ _As is usual in genetic counselling, risks should always be put into perspective. Only a minority of consanguineous couples has an increased risk, and if a consanguineous couple has an affected child, this is not always caused by the consanguinity of the parents. Genetic testing of affected and unaffected members may be helpful in some families, and genetic screening of parents-to-be for carriership of the more frequent disorders in a population might be considered._ - Cousin marriages: between tradition, genetic risk and cultural change, ISBN 978-1-78238-492-2

However due to inbreeding they caused Hemophilia to rage across their family tree which actually caused a hemophiliac son to be born to the Czar of Russia. Also porphyria was a genetic problem due to inbreeding in royal families. They had the appearance of health but it was not rlly so.
@FreeSpirit47
@FreeSpirit47 3 года назад
@@MrsGrimmjow There are many recessive traits in all people. Hemophilia is only one of them. Most of the royal family don't have hemophilia. It's only by chance that a recessive gene shows up. This explains how it really is by chance. A well known example is Ashton Kutcher's twin brother. 2 babies, fraternal twins, same parents. Michael Kutcher has cerebral palsy whereas Ashton doesn't.

Your family line is very lucky then! I always feel relieved when I see that the offsprings of first cousins turn out normal and healthy. I always worry for the kids. I have mixed experience about this. I'm an Asian and here first cousin marriage is very normal. Nobody bats an eye or get surprised like the US or European people. My mom and aunts are six sisters. Her elder sister married her elder son to her second sister's daughter. They have three boys - all healthy but very short tempered. My dad's colleague married his maternal aunt's daughter. Their first boy was okay but the girl had autism. My two paternal cousins ( first cousins) married too. One boy - healthy and smart. So, you see the whole cousin marriage thing is like a gamble - you may lose it all or win it. There is always a huge chance of passing genetic disorder to the kids. Though I do not judge people for falling in love with their cousin but I do not support them having kids together because not everyone will be lucky as you.

@@AA-js8yx yes it is; and R Can is only partially correct. Incest on the whole is still bad, and even within a homogenous community, this practice will eventually lead to everyone there being genetically related enough that the community will slowly breed itself into extinction. Look what happened to all the Royal and noble houses of Europe, especially the Hapsburg dynasty of Germany; they all married their cousins and worse when it came to incest; that’s why they all died out. Genetic diversity is the key to survival of ALL species, and inbreeding never leads to anything good. Incest and relationships like these are forbidden for a reason.

If they wanna be together ok fine you do you, but they need to be undergoing procedures to prevent having kids. If they’re desperate then adopting/fostering kid(s) is the way to go as many kids need homes and a family.

Right but when you normalize cousin marriages you get families that "keep it in the family" and every generation of cousin marriage leads to increases in the risk of genetic defect. It's looked down on for a reason.

@@somethinginthenothing Just by getting legalized it doesnt get normalized. Its legal in Germany for example and there arent more genetic defects. If two people fall in love who are we as a society to say, they cant get it on, of the risk of birth defects is the same as a woman in her 40s having a child with an unrelated man. It infringes heavily on personal freedom for insufficient and inconsistent reasons.
