The REIGN OF ELIZABETH II came to an end after 70 years on 8 September 2022, but her legacy will no doubt last much longer. In this English royal history documentary from History Calling, I’ll provide a biography of Queen Elizabeth II, the longest reigning monarch in British history and a woman who will be sorely missed around the world. We’ll look at who the Queen’s parents were, at the life of Elizabeth II before she was queen and at how the then Princess Elizabeth of York (known as Lilibet within the family) found herself in line for the throne after the abdication crisis of 1936 when her uncle, King Edward VII, gave up the crown in order to marry Wallis Simpson.
I’ll discuss Princess Elizabeth’s wartime efforts and her romance with Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who she wed in 1947. The video will then cover her early married life and the birth of her first two children, Prince Charles and Princess Anne, before we get to the death of George VI in February 1952 and the Queen’s accession to the throne and coronation. I’ll discuss her long reign, including her relationship with historical figures such as Sir Winston Churchill and the major trials and tribulations she faced within and beyond her family. We’ll look at the difficulties she encountered when her sister, Princess Margaret, wanted to marry Peter Townshend in the 1950s and at the four scandalous divorces which rocked the royal family as Margaret, then three of the Queen’s four children all split from their spouses. This will include the very difficult breakdown of the marriage of Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales which contributed to the Queen’s annus horribilis in 1992, a year which also saw her beloved Windsor Castle suffer serious fire damage. Moving on through the 1990s, we’ll think about how the death of Princess Diana affected the Queen and her public image and how, after that nadir in her reputation, she rebuilt the royal brand with the help of her family to become an immensely popular figure the globe over, with the love and respect for her culminating in her Platinum Jubilee celebrations just a few months before her death. In the course of this video you’ll hear some little known facts about Elizabeth II and learn about the history of the house of Windsor during the 20th and 21st centuries.

EDIT: I have a small correction - Lord Mountbatten was killed in August 1979. Sorry about that! I don't really have a question for this video in the way that I usually do. If you'd like to leave a little tribute to the Queen in the comments though, please feel free to use this space to do so.

A fitting tribute to Queen Elizabeth II. She calmed us during the times of hardship. Not just in her realm. For example, after 9/11 she broke from tradition by directing the Coldstream Guard to play America’s national anthem. That meant so much to us. I know many countries whom she has helped in some form. She also charmed us with her witty remarks and her smile. I always looked forward to her Christmas address. We shall miss her at Christmas. I am going to miss her smile. My deepest sympathies to everyone in the UK, Ireland and the Commonwealth. BTW, her wedding veil was gorgeous. I never noticed it until now. R.I.P. Queen Elizabeth II 💐

Yes, I remember her having the US National Anthem played. That was a lovely gesture. Thank you for reminding me. I wish I'd thought to include that detail in the video now. Yes, the wedding veil was amazing (the dress too of course).

Thank you. A fitting tribute to our amazing Queen. I saw her majesty when she visited the city where I live in an open-topped car, we had waited for many hours. If memory serves me, I was about 10. I then, many years later, married a soldier - he served our Queen, as did I. Every time he left me and our daughters for his 'work' I reminded myself that he was doing so for Queen and County. When I heard that she had died last week, I was in shock, I still remain so today.

Yes, I've always liked Princess Anne. She's a hard worker (not that her brothers aren't). It's very sad to see how broken-hearted they all are. I feel for them having to be on camera so much at the moment. They didn't even get 24 hours after her death to mourn in private.

A lovely video. The Queen was a very strong and determined woman. She had quite a few setbacks in her life from losing her father at a young age, to losing her mother and sister within weeks of each other, to contracting covid in her 90s, but she just knuckled down and got on with it. Imagine being 96 and never retiring because you promised not to at the age of 21, and even though almost everyone you were speaking to is now dead and replaced with a completely different set of people, you believe it still applies. As you said, she’s earned her rest. And I think we’ll see a lot of girls born this year who have Elizabeth as either a first name or middle name.

Wonderful tribute to Her Majesty. I enjoyed the new selection of pictures and video clips after seeing the standard ones over and over during the past few days. Also, how is it that I've never heard that her children were delivered by c-section? I'm assuming that all of them were delivered in that manner since V-back wasn't a thing in those days. You also mention the decimalization of British currency. I was in London for a long weekend in 1969 and it was a real challenge because you had to be sure if you paid someone in "new pence" that they gave you change in new pence too. It was a double challenge because you had to deal with not just one unfamiliar set of coins, but two. I'd forgotten about that. Thank you for a great report.

A lovely tribute to a lovely lady who always conducted herself with great dignity and grace no matter what the situation.Queen Elizabeth II was the only monarch most of my family have ever known and my Howard great-grandmother(who I remember very well!) managed to live until the age of 101 as one of her life's goals was to get a telegram from the Queen.Condolences and blessings to the family,and all those who had admiration for her whether you're a monarchist or not I feel the lady did a damn good job through some tough times.Now reunited with the love of her life Prince Philip.Amen and peace from Australia

Thank you. That was a smart goal for your great-grandmother to have. It gave her something to stay alive for all the way past 100. Well done her :-) (Also, those are really good genes you've got!)

I'm so unutterably sad at the Queen's passing. It is indeed the end of an era. An era that she embodied so well, with her devotion to her God, her family, her country and her duty. She was among the last of the greatest generation that the world has produced, and a fitting representative of them. May God preserve her memory, and give her a well deserved rest.

This was just beautiful, thankyou so much for putting it together. No matter what you think of her (I'm in Australia so there is contention here) you cannot fault her loyalty to her people and her stoicism. I believe her to be a truly wonderful woman who took her role to heart.

This was a beautiful and historically faithful tribute to HMTQ. Do you think you could do a video on Edward VIII and Mrs Simpson? So many of the current videos are rumor and gossip laden. I know you would treat the subject with due care and accurate sources.

This was just beautifully and elegantly presented. Thank you so much. I do have one question about the early years of her reign. When Margaret fell in love with Peter Townsend, only two small children stood between her and the queen in the order of succession. The former Edward VIII was still very much alive over in France, and I wonder how much concern about the stability of the monarchy still lingered behind the scene? Nobody every mentions this, but I wonder if there was much more alarm than we ever heard about over what the Duke of Windsor might do if Margaret's marriage to a divorced man was officially approved. Especially since the queen and government knew more at the time than the public did about the friendships Edward had formed with the nazis (who were still active in England and elsewhere). What if he'd precipitated a crisis and demanded to be restored to the throne? So perhaps you are right and Margaret's romance had cooled, but perhaps there were also deeper concerns about "Uncle David's" reaction. I know that I, like practically everyone else in the whole world at the time, was hoping Margaret and Peter Townsend would find happiness, and I'm sorry that happiness seems to have eluded her.
@HistoryCalling
@HistoryCalling Год назад
Hmm, interesting question. I don't think he could have demanded restoration, as he'd willingly abdicated, but I don't know what he thought about Margaret's marriage. She was going to have to give up her succession rights if the 1770s Act had been amended, so I don't think it would have paved a road back for him. Of course the irony is, she ended up getting divorced too and only 6 years after he died.
