Wild type reptiles are very cool, but there are also an incredible variety of unusual and beautiful morphs like albino, piebald, leucistic, hypo, etcetera that are dazzling to behold. So what is really going on with these beautiful and unusual color morphs? I'll tell you.

Fascinating stuff! You hear lots of folks talking about how to breed for particular morphs (especially ball pythons). By breaking down the types of pigments and what they do, this is a great introduction to the 'why' instead of the 'what'. Great video!!

Fun fact here in nova scotia we have an island where hyper melanism occurs far more often in(maritime) Garter snakes than it does anywhere else and we're talking a significant portion of its population so not a small margin.
@darcieclements4880
@darcieclements4880 2 года назад
Hypermelanism is very common in nature, but I have never seen it in a garter, that sounds pretty cool. I would imagine they use it to help warm up given the latitude. Michigan has hypermelanisic hognose for the same reason

Must be an evolutionary advantage and maybe in a couple decades there will be a new local type that's taken over the usual coloration.
@herpermike_

I've always thought that a lot of the genes are thrown out there in nature kinda to see how it does and if it ends up being advantageous and does well in the current ecosystem, then it will be put into the gene pool and will be more likely to catch on in a small area lol. My uncle and I have talked about the ball pythons and the genes they've been throwing out and if we, humans, weren't involved, what a normal, wild type ball python would look like in a thousand years lol!

I love how understanding color genetics in reptiles can help the understanding of color genetics in other animals. Most people don't realize that the common black house cat is actually a hypomelanistic tabby. Very few domestic black cats are truly, purely black. I also bet a lot of people don't realize Leucism exists in humans too. Vitaligo is a form of leucism and a lot of people who get mistaken for having albinism are actually leucistic and I've even met people who grew up thinking they had albinism but they actually had leucism.

I love this video!!! I’m a zoology major and this stuff gets me so excited! One suggestion- have the picture examples be a little more clear on what they are. Put some text that says what it is and try to have a picture of everything you’re talking about so we can see and really understand it better. The pictures were a little confusing in that I didn’t always know if I was looking at the thing that was being talked about or not

Maybe a fun fact? There are in fact four different genes for 'piebaldism' in horses. Tobiano-Most common and heterozygous. Overo-Most commonly seen in the American paint horse. Heterozygous. It's technically an incomplete dominant, but homozygous foals (born completely white) have a severe genetic birth defect, thus they won't survive longer than a few days. Sabino-Incomplete dominant, where homozygous animals can range from almost white to all kinds of eye-catching patterns. Splash-Commonly referred to as recessive, but according to some research it's more likely to be an incomplete dominant. Homozygous animals have blue eyes together with a very distinct white pattern, and a single copy of the gene is thought to possibly be responsible for blue eyes in otherwise dark coloured horses (with miniscule white markings).
@kimpanther5110
@kimpanther5110 2 года назад
Don't forget about the White Spotting genes! I think there's been like 30 discovered as of now? It was initially thought there were several Sabino genes (which is why it's dictated sb1, researchers were expecting more) but alas, it's a totally different gene! I wanna say tobiano, sb1, roan, and White Spotting genes are all KIT mutations? That's as far as my genetics knowledge goes though 😅 It's a cool example of phenotype vs genotype! Arabians and Thoroughbreds can be phenotypically "Sabino" but genotypically not. Sato the TB is W5 while Rhevelation the Arabian is W15
@maggiepie8810
@maggiepie8810 2 года назад
@@kimpanther5110 You're absolutely correct, and my knowledge on sabino was clearly outdated. KIT and leopard (spotting) are ones I didn't know how to explain without the help of pictures, so I know that I simplified things quite a bit, you're correct. I was just trying to focus on the genes that appear to look the most like the piebald gene in python regius. I think the reptile morph the most similar to (some) leopard horses would be palmetto in corn snakes? Considering that snakes don't have legs, would you describe a pie sided corn snake as more similar to a single copy of Sb1, or two copies of splashed white?

I have a piebald dog. He's a "Parti" colored Yorkshire Terrier, and the "Parti Gene" is, from what I can tell, basically just a form of piebaldism that, like with dalmations, eventually leads to more color spotting as the animal ages. He's about 9 now, and he looks pretty white with just five large color spots when his fur is long, because the smaller spots only color the base of his hairs, but when he's short cropped he has a bunch of black and brown flecks in the spaces between his large color spots.
@spots6450
@spots6450 2 года назад
Actually, in dogs those flecks you see in white markings are unrelated to the white markings themselves! It’s a completely separate gene that controls what is called ticking (those little spots) and roaning (a mixing of coloured and white hairs like seen in Australian Cattle Dogs), which ‘undoes’ the piedballism in small areas in a way that causes the colour to develop as the dog ages (I don’t think it’s known how it worlds physically). So a dog with any amount of white can have those little spots, not just a dog with a large amount of white spotting like your little guy! The best way to tell the difference between markings caused by ticking or the piedballism is if it’s present at birth, because if it is then it’s from the piedballism but if it develops with age it’s ticking.

In some respects I understand the appeal of morphs but I agree with you Clint in that I typically find myself liking the wild type colors and patterns most. This is especially true when you look at Burmese pythons, true red-tailed boas and rainbow boas. I've personally never understood the appeal of Brazilian Rainbow Boa morphs when the wild type is already so breathtaking. That said, they do make for an interesting discussion of mendelian and more advanced genetics.

Some of that early research has been debunked as experimental artifacts and more of a correlation than causation with both being generated through the domestication process rather than directly impacting each other. Hi if I may jump in here. You can get a BEL by breeding Lesser to lesser (this will give a white snake with blue eyes) Mojove to mojave (same) Mojove to lesser (same) And fire to fire ( which is the same but with black eyes and specs of subtle yellow) If you get the super lesser form then you can get a snake with what they call bug eyes. BELs are in most cases the super form however if its a blue eyed white snake you want.. id personally pick one that is mojave x lesser. And the care is the same as you would give a normal ball python. I hope this helps

Right now we have a leopard cinnamon het pied and het lav that we are pairing to a female sandblast super pastel possible yellowbelly 50% het pied girl we are aiming for some urban camos but without getting any sterlings since 2 cinnamon= increase problems with kinks. I have seen one be mislabelled as an albino by a breeder in a youtuber's video of a reptile con. It was piebald with patches of yellow and black eyes. It was a gorgeous snake. But not albino. I had an albino corn snake which was light pink with darker pink patterns. She was gorgeous.

No. Rainbow boa SCALES contain crystals of guanine causing the rainbow interference patterns.

Xanthochromism (yellowness) is common in avian dinosaurs (birds), look up "yellow cardinal" for a treat. Yellow Pac-Man frogs are also xanthochromatic.
