when it comes to the Blood Pythons he is right on, I would rate it 4 out of 5 I have had my blood now for about a year, it is 5 Y/O about 4 foot, I am not going to power feed either, I like slow and natural too. it came to me from a handler at a zoo so it is use to everything, actually likes being held and wraps my arm when he knows he is going to be put back, since mine is well handled and has never really had a bad situation ..... other pets, he gets along with and interacts fine with my 100 Lbs German Shepard (the dog is very well mannered) LOL not as good of an eater as Clint says LOL Large or even jombo F/T just fine, some times ya gotta play the dance, then he may hit it hard from the side and suck on it for 10 min. before moving it around to eat, I have also seen it eat tail first, Im thinking how are you going to do that LOL but he did sometimes in N.Y it gets a little below 70 in my house, it does not seem to bother him, I do notice he slows down a little, but he has a heating pad and a nice tight Blue Stone hide over it I keep 3 different breeds of snakes, its not as active as my Ball Python LOL, the blood can really sit in the same spot for days! you might even think its dead I dont handle him for a day or two after eating just to let things settle, not that you cant its just what I do, since I have a feeding box he dont go into feeding mode every time I open his tank so I have to handle him after feeding to put him back.... I also try not to handle him in shed, sometimes he can be pissy, he almost always hisses when his tank is open that seems to be what this breed does haha but once you start to pick him up he dont hiss at all after its just an over all good (Large) snake, if you are going to get one I suggest watching as many videos from all these guys always be careful, wash your hands before and after handling, make sure its awake and get a few short flicks before reaching and and pulling it out and you will be fine :)

The whole point of "probably the best reptile", "arguably the best reptile" and "one of the coolest reptiles" is that it is not confirming it in fact is the best reptile. It is a lecture in subjectivity. What will be the BEST PET REPTILE for one person, will not necessarily be the case for another. Fact is that one can never confirm one reptile is the best, for what constitutes "best reptile" have different parameters for what would be best for the individual. With that in mind, confirming a reptile as the best pet reptile is impossible. The closest one can get is "probably", "arguably" and "on of the.." I find it beautiful that way.

"One awkward noodle to juggle." I have an adult blood python, he's around 4 1/2' and he's actually decent at gripping but he still slips easily. Still I can voice they can be awkward noodles but well worth it, had him since he was about 3 weeks old. Also I recommend what he did towards the end, cradle them and it makes holding them so much easier.

@@JK-vy8vh wow i never got the comment notifications until just now. Finding stuff 5 months old feels pretty bad. To answer your question i hold him as an adult around once a month but not that often these days do to other issues. He is quite calm and chill usually just being curious. As a baby he was a little nipper though and i held him usually three or four times a week when he was little to get him acclimated to being handled and people. Short periods of time to start then longer. He actually calmed down surprisingly fast though i think that was partially due to me keeping his tank next to my desk in my apartment when he was a baby and even now so he got used to me being around even when not holding him. Hope that helps and sorry for the long delay.

I got a juvenile blood python at the beginning of this year (partly because of this video) and I absolutely adore him. He’s very shy but perfectly handleable and didn’t really take any more time or effort to tame down than any of my other snakes. They’re not an active species at all, so if you want a snake that will climb on you or give you a big hug these are not the ones, but I love sitting with him on my lap in the evenings when I’m unwinding. I have a blood python. He's great. Little nervous when I first got him but he calms down more with each handling. I think they're great but detailed research is a must before getting one of these snakes. Borneo and Sumatran short-tails are also great if you want a snake with a similar build but tend to have mellower personalities by natures, at least that's what I've read and heard. I don't currently keep those species.
@erikm8372
@erikm8372 11 месяцев назад
Aren’t the short-tailed, the blood and Bornean species all sort of considered “blood pythons”? I know they’re different species under the same genus, so obviously they’re not the same exact species… that’s like saying all ball pythons are Burmese are all rock pythons are all blood pythons are Angolan etc. lol. But I thought the Bornean and short-tailed were also called “blood pythons”? Maybe the association has changed recently. Some of the taxonomy has changed… _Python breitensteini_ is from Borneo; the Sumatran short-tailed, _P. curtus_ and then what was considered the “standard” of blood pythons, which lives mainly on the mainland of Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and some offshore islands, _P. brongersmai_ was formerly called Brongersmai’s python?

I think blood pythons are one of the most beautiful snakes along with the gaboon and rhino. My blood would sit in one spot for days and not move a bit to the point where I was starting to worry about it. The only way I could tell it was alive was that I could see it breathing. The unbelievable patience this snake has definitely kept me cautious. There were a couple times I got in the cage to check on him and without any warning or movement, Bam. It hit hard but luckily didn't get me because I knew it was coming.

Hello. I just wanted to leave a tip for people who want to keep high-humidity reptiles in a tank- it IS possible, especially for small-time keepers like myself. A lot of people use foil on the top of their enclosures. I don't enjoy doing this because the foil usually falls down or is lifted at the corners on accident and it lets the heat out. I have some quick fixes for you!! The general first step is to have a substrate suitable. Coconut husk works great in low-humidity areas, like Clint said. Other fixes are: 1) HVAC tape. This is a safe tape designed to tape together heating and air conditioning units. So if you use an overhead heat source, it will not melt or burn. You just tape it on in rows, then cut out a circle to put your heating lamp. 2) Plexiglass lid. If you want to do something that's a little nicer looking, you can secure some sheets of plexi-glass to the lid of the enclosure around the lamp (if you have one). 3) Leave a larger water dish directly underneath the heating lamp. This will cause the water to evaporate and create more humidity. I hope this helps you!!

@Brinta3
@Brinta3 4 года назад
No, those dimpled scales are actually from too low humidity. That doesn’t mean he’s not taking good care of it or that the snake is unhealthy. It’s virtually impossible to keep a bloodpython in the exact right humidity: the air in an enclosure is usually quite stagnant, as opposed to in open nature.Too humid conditions will then quickly cause respiratory problems. In other words... better let it have some dimpled scales than pneumonia.

The best way I have found to hold them (and this can be said for many snakes) is to sling them over your shoulder like a bundle of rope and let them wrap themselves around your waist or other shoulder for support. If you help them into a position where you support their weight but they feel like they chose that position, it becomes really easy.

Hey! I have a blood Python baby and he is actually less defensive than my ball pythons! I highly recommend, they are not bitey if you properly support them. I have been bitten once and it was 100% my fault. He got a repti chip stuck in his mouth and I tried to help. He wasn't pleased. My baby is difficult with feeding and only takes live, but he is going to be switched to frozen soon, the feeding response is AMAZING.

Great video! I got a blood Python about three weeks ago! He was very nervous and would bite at random! But with holding for the first week about 10 minutes a day he hasn't bit me and has become an awesome snake!

Brian Kusko has a breeding pair, in WITCH his CHILDREN ABSOLUTELY ADORE! The FIRST snek they ALWAYS wanna hold is SANGRIA, or Roxanne, depending on WITCH is in blue. It's SO INCREDIBLE watching his kid handle the serpents! I wish you can do a vid with BRIAN KUSKO! You go to him, or vice versa, it's all good!

I was just at an expo a couple days ago, and my friend and I got to handle a young blood python for the first time. Definitely needed more support from the bottom than a ball python, but other than that she was a sweetheart. She was very inquisitive, but was also just content laying in our arms. We didn't wanna put her down, except for when we started to feel her heft lol. Gorgeous snakes, very sweet if you care for them properly, and very possibly my next snake

100% agree that Gaboon vipers are the coolest. I never plan on owning a venomous snake but they would certainly be the kind I'd pick if I did. They are gorgeous and their heads and fangs are spectacular!

You are right about the humidity. I have worked with some large blood red beauties in a very humid environment. Still had problems with eye caps not coming off. Trying to remove those eye cap scales resulted in a nasty bite as the Blood latched on and proceeded to chew away. Needless to say those specimens ended up in the collection of a major zoo (back when they were not nearly as available as they are now). Good video!

theres some at my petco in LA. i hate that they did it bc #1, our humidity SUCKS. it’s dry asf here. #2, it doesn’t say that it needs humidity in their little care sheet. #3, the enclosure they had was on 20% humidity and aspen substrate. it was heartbreaking to watch. i wanted to save it but that meant supporting their suppliers :(

Just held a baby blood at the Burpee Museum. Could not have been much more than a year old. His head was already bigger than my 27 year old, 10lb ball python. So that is definitely something to keep in mind. The scales are awesome and smooth, the texture is undescribeable. I just cradled him in both arms next to my body like a baby and despite not being handled alot, he calmed down nicely and took a nap. They are definitely more sensitive to movement around the head than any other python or boa I have handled. When my boyfriend tried to hold him, he was not having it and became fussy and would not get comfortable on him. He had to hand him back to me. That is when the volunteer there called me "Snake Whisperer" I have always adored Gaboon Vipers, thank you for letting me know of the similiarities!

I have short tailed python 3 yrs old male and i have to say he is wonderful. Got him 2 months ago, he never really hissed at me not mentioning striking. His previous owner that have like dozen of them told me they usually are tame almost like ball python. Great pets, very chill and almost friendly, but as always i'm very catious around snakes even around corns 😅.

I have wanted a blood python for a looooong time. I've had Ball pythons, Burmese pythons, and a few Boas. The thing that has always made me shy away from getting one is the work you need to do to keep the humidity right to keep them healthy. I am sure I will end up getting one some day down the road when my life is a little more stable and I am living somewhere I can have pets again. I totally agree that Gaboon vipers are the coolest snakes in the world and now that you mention it Blood pythons are similar in a lot of ways which just makes them that much cooler.

Love the video clint! I'm glad I'm not the only one that likes these snakes because they are kinda like Gaboons. I got myself a Sumatran Short Tail which is much like the Blood but in a more black and white variety and are a little easier with possible bitting and humidity requirements. He is still young but really good so far!

Bloods are python brongersmai, not python curtus. They also can get 6-8ft for large females, though average is in the 4-6 range for both. Rarely over 20lbs though, you're correct on that part. Thank you for specifying support and mentioning how they have hard to read body language. That's one of the reasons they make horrible pets for most people... they dont read like a normal snake. Thank you for specifying you cant use tanks and they are very sensitive to humidity and air quality. They should have more than just a little peak though... even an obese blood will have a peak. A healthy blood should be a very distinct triangular/teardrop shape. I very much do not recommend using heat mats for adults though. They are prone to causing thermal blockage... my largest came to me with a burn from that... id stick to using radiant heat panels for adult bloods and short tails

Smaller options to p. Brongersmai would be p. Breitensteini, Borneo short tail, or p. Curtus, Sumatran short tail pythons. They get sizable, but not quite as big as a blood

I've had one for 2 years now, hes a little hissy brat whenever I try to handle him but puts up with it fairly well. But for housing just drill a dozen or two 1/8" holes around the sides of a under bed tote. Mine has wheels and slides in an out super easy. I've got a good 4" of coconut bedding, like 3 bricks an another 2 of forest moss. He loves it. Shedding is super easy with one 9X9" heating pad under one side, kept near his water.
