I got a good idea for a neutral ending for Bioshock: Jack refuses the Key to Rapture handed by that one Little Sister, just leaves the city and never wants to see it again.

1:11, Well, no one ever questions how electric gun turrets work. How does electricity form allegiances? I think the creators of Bioshock were implying that the engineers in Rapture built computers that use hydraulics or water flow for the basic logical operations rather than silicon-based electrical circuits. We should totally build water flow-based computers. It would solve the whole overheating problem nicely (not being serious).

@@stewy497 in the pre-transistor era, a hydraulic compute might not have been that much more absurdly large than any other of the time, and the idea that it would function after an EMP would outweigh that flaw. I feel like the easiest (not the best, just the simplest) way to make a moral choice systen is just to add an additional 2 endings so the 4 endings would be: 1.) Good person who stuck to his values if you were completely good 2.) Good person who did bad things (if you were mostly good) You saved the day or whatever but the things you did for survival have scarred you a bit 3.) Selfish (mostly but not all bad) Everything you did was just for you. You harvested little sisters for your own survival for example and only let them live because it was a hassle to kill them 4.) Evil. You did everything you could for your own power or just out of a desire to see others suffer. Bam now you have a gradient that can reflect your actions regardless of what you did and why and you can just improve more from there
@crobsh
@crobsh 7 лет назад
I actually really liked the moral choice system from BioShock 2; there was a good vs. evil axis based on how many Little Sisters you harvested, same as here, plus an additional justice v. mercy axis based on how many times you killed evil, but defenseless, characters. That's a good system because people who are pro- or anti-death penalty both consider themselves to be on the "good" side of the scale. It reflects the differing moral convictions that players will have in a meaningful way, & it forces the player to make some genuinely tough calls.

Actually I was referring to its storyline borrowing tricks from SS2 (mostly that SS2 pulled a metanarrative stunt on the player and the main character at the same time with its shock reveal) and also using similar setups to SS2's to cause the same sense of isolation, anxiety, and wrongness in Rapture as in the Von Braun. Yahtzee already said quite a few valid things about Bioshock and System Shock 2's similarities in gameplay mechanics, I was looking deeper at their many shared writing tropes.

It was hyped up so aggressively by a few youtube channels I respect, so I made my first ever $60 game purchase and dutifully played through it, only to discover that despite a fair number of interesting and well-executed moments it was still 60 hours of game, large swathes of which are spent just interacting with the mediocre combat mechanics and running around for sidequests, and because I had the cool parts of the ending spoiled, I wasn't stunned by them and was free to notice things like the shockingly stupid twists near the end.

The little sisters were the most well designed moral dilemmas I've ever encountered. I really couldn't kill the poor things even though I had no knowledge of the different endings. It's just a monstrous thing to do even in a video game. I was surprised to see that all my labor was not in vain and the ending was emotionally satisfying and the message was simple, yet sublime: Altruism was the sole thing that saved you, not individualism. "you're put into a location knowing little about who you are or where you are. You are soon introduced to mutated monsters out to kill you. You then meet a character that you befreind and walks you through everything. Said character then fucks you over, then you have to destroy said character." That describe so many games. The "evil all along" has many examples on TV-tropes, and loads of games have "In medias res" storytelling. Bioshock and System Shock are similar for different reasons.

Also I found the journey through Rapture to be filled with emotion. Hearing the splicers talk to themselves for the first time sent shivers through my spine. These people had normal, happy lives and now they're just shadows of their former selves damned to live through this eternal cycle of violence and addiction. I rather felt sorry for them. Some of them even found refuge in religion like all desperate people do..and who wouldn't when you see all that's dear to you being teared down apart.

One of the points of the game was to show the ilusion of choice, to make you think that what you did would have a consequence but in the game its revealed that all the time you were but a pawn in the plot.
@DanielYellsAtPeople
@DanielYellsAtPeople 10 лет назад
But the thing is by having the moral endings, its not really all illusion, your choices affect your ending. Even though I hated it, Bioshock Infinite did the better job of making sure your choices don't matter, because none of them change the ending, or affect the plot in any meaningful way.

There technically is a neutral ending. I don't like to think of it as a good, bad and neutral ending, but a happy, sad and mad ending. The happy ending is saving all the little sisters, the sad ending is saving some little sisters while harvesting other little sisters, and the mad ending is harvesting all the little sisters. Some will argue that there's only 1 bad ending, and the difference between sad and mad ending is just tone, but I disagree. The sad ending communicates that you had the potential to be a good guy, but you had a tendency to fall into temptation and sin. The mad ending communicates that you were just plain evil. See how the ending changes just based on tone
@RegretfulDeadMan

From what I understand there's technically a third ending where the only thing that changes between the bad ending and the worse ending is the tone of voice of the nararator.
