I'm depressive predominant. I've been on lithium for about 10 years, but since my diagnosis changed from bipolar disorder to schizoaffective disorder, I'm also on latuda. I also take quetiapine to help me sleep. It took some time to get my meds right, but now I've been stable since October, which is great. 😀

I've been on Lamotrigine for years with great success. Having been on many antipsychotics over the years, I find the disregard for permanent TD symptoms to be way underappreciated when when doctors prescribe Abilify etcetera. It doesn't really matter if you're under control if you can't leave the house because you're drooling. I also have friends with bipolar disorder who are on Seroquel, are experiencing TD side effects and their doctor has them remain on Seroquel I don't understand why doctors doesn't don't understand the importance and the disruption of life when you have tardive dyskinesia. In fact many doctors don't tell don't even tell their patients that Abilify can cause TD. I know a lot of people with bipolar disorder and very few are educated that the medications they are on can cause lifelong dyskinesia. As somebody who's developed TD after being on seroquel and Risperdal, it makes me really angry that there was very little attention paid to the fact that I was beginning symptoms of TD. And least of all that these types of medications are not discontinued when this serious side effect begins. I'd love for you to do a video on tardive dyskinesia and how disruptive towards life it can be. I'd almost rather be depressed then unable to leave the house because I'm drooling constantly. And friends who have started lip smacking or their tongue hanging out of their mouth. It's just awful that these things are disregarded as it seems people with bipolar anf psychotic llnesses, well it seems just not worth it to pay attention to these common life altering side effects. Do you agree that if say blood pressure medication caused someone's tongue to constantly hang out of their mouth, that this medication would be discontinued. If this was a side effect of any other medication for "physical' disorders, people wouldn't be told oh well...keep taking the pills that make you drool. Hard stuff for us. Esp to be disregarded. Thanks.

I was diagnosed with depression at age 9. Anxiety was added when I was 20. Then another psych said that it was bipolar and had me on mood stabilisers. But it wasn't working. No medication, no therapy, nothing was making it better. It was only at age 30( 3 years ago) my psych finally said "hey you have adhd let's put you on some ritallin" and suddenly everything made sense. As a woman i know its hard to diagnose so i don't blame those psychs. Depression was a symptom. I became depressed because I was being held back. I couldn't enjoy a movie that I once loved, and i had that added rejection thing that so many of us adhd peeps have. Mental health can sometimes be really tricky. Knowing what's wrong can sometimes be better than the medications. I'm only on the stimulants and antidepressants. I still take them but I also find my own ways of dealing with things and this has been the best 3 years of my life.

I was diagnosed as bipolar type 2 in 2019. Since I have lived alone for the last 40 years, it's hard for me to know whether I am predominantly one way or another. For that matter, it's hard for me to realize when I am having any kind of episode. It only becomes clear when I look back over the last few months, years, or over my whole life in retrospect. There are periods where my creativity gives me great fulfillment, but creates an insatiable need for more. Then, I'll decide that what I have produced is flat in quality, and not that important. I'll even feel foolish for having thought it would be so valued. Moreover, I'll go from being governed by a belief that I can influence the wider world to being focused on how others don't like me, and that I am not worth much. It's been difficult for me to find that healthy middle, where a person feels valuable for being able to do the essential simple things like relate to others well and enjoy things without overthinking them.

I can't thank you enough for this video. I'm type 2 dpp rapid cycling, I'm on quietapine and low dose fluoxetine. I've had people almost abuse me saying I'm wrong, my meds are wrong, there's no such thing as polarity and I shouldn't be on anti depression medication. I have spent a lot of time with my doc to get the right combo for me. This video makes me feel like I'm on the right path and I can better understand what's going on. I was miss diagnosed because of my dpp for so long no one believed me I was bipolar. Your videos are great sources of information. I'll be sharing this in the future when people don't believe me or doubt how bad it can be being manic and depressed at the same time. Again thank you, I feel like I'm on the right path and don't feel like I'm alone in what I'm feeling.

i was treated for depression with anti-depressants the last couple decades and i never felt good . my doctor kept switching doses and would add other drugs to help with anxiety. it made it worse. Isuicidal at one point. i medicated with whatever substance i could get my hands until i was a full fledge daily addict . i checked myself into rehab after a failed suicide attempt. thankfully my wife pushed me to go for a longer concurrent program and i was able to get a proper bi pilar 2 diagnoses. i am now 4 months clean and being treated for bi polar 2 with a mood stabilizer. i have never felt better , things are now healing with my kids and wife . i realize now this will be a life long battle. my thoughts are with everyone here struggling. i hope you find peace . ❤

Depression predominant. I started SSRI's in High School which woke up the mania. When Prozac didn't work and Zoloft made me disassociate and believe I could communicate directly with nature, my PCP should not have put me on Effexor. Ended up dropping out of college because my mixed episode got so bad that I was making horrendous decisions, getting high instead of doing work, and I was suicidal 24/7. There are totally, 100% signs that a child is going to become bipolar later in life, and an inventory should be taken before they're put on SSRI's in the first place. I was originally Bipolar 2, and I would've never experienced full mania if it weren't for antidepressants.

I always tell everyone how you’re the reason I was able to get a proper diagnosis after a 13 year battle of being mis-diagnosed. I’ve learned and continue to learn so much from your videos. Infinite gratitude to you Dr. Tracy Marks. You are literally a savior! ❤ 13 years later I’m finally in control of my bipolar super power. Here is one thing I would love to know. Why are folks with Bipolar disorder known to be artistic and creative??? What’s the science behind being bipolar and being a creative person/artist? When I was finally diagnosed my doctor said to me “you’re bipolar, you must be an artist or very creative” and she is right. I’m a full time performance artist. Turns out Jim Carey, Cher, Mariah Carey and so many other famous artist are also bipolar. What’s the connection?

I think doctors putting me on like ten different antidepressants for years until I was finally diagnosed with Cyclothymia and only recently with Bipolar has had a lot of input into mixed episodes. I’m now put on more meds that I’ve ever been on and I honestly regret all those years of being under diagnosed, but whatcha gonna do. I’d love to be able to get years between the episodes at the very least lol I’m high functioning - that’s good - but some areas of my life are honestly influenced too much by my moods. Thank you, Doc, for not only informative but also entertaining take on serious matters like mental health ❤

Doctor, many thanks for this explanation. I have searched for over 30 years for answers to my depression. A number of different psychiatrists prescribed anti depressants only. I would be fine for a little while and then the bottom would drop out. I'd be severely depressed. In hindsight I'm disappointed that none of the doctors diagnosed bipolar disorder given my symptoms. Heavy drinking was the answer for me. (The boogeyman can't get you if you pull the blanket over your head.) Then I stopped drinking and it all started again. I have recently found a doctor who has made the right diagnosis of bipolar 2. I'm doing much better. However, your explanation was much clearer than anything I've been told or read. Thank you for all that you do. If I had only found you long ago I might have lived a much happier and productive life.

Before I saw a psych I was given Prozac by my primary. Caused the worst depressive episode I've ever had. Almost lost my job because I was so depressed I couldn't move. I just quit taking it. Saw a psychiatrist and they said that was the most dangerous thing a doctor could do because I have BIPOLAR 1!!! I have equal manic and depressive episodes. It was always one extreme to another. Never had stability. Now I'm 2.5 years into treatment and I feel better.

I’ve suffered so long, only until I went private did I get the answers I need. The private psychiatrist listened to me, the nhs discarded me. I can now start treating bipolar rather than just depression, I have become manic due to my tablet changes/upping of doses and that’s what’s triggered it again I think. Bang on!

Thank you so much for explaining this. I've always wondered why some other people with Bipolar 1 seemed to be manic more than me. When I'm manic, I'm really manic, with delusions, past hospitalization for mania, etc. I definitely have Bipolar 1 and was diagnosed with it 23 years ago this August. I've heard a lot people with Bipolar 2 are depressed most of the time and not Bipolar 1, but the majority of the time I'm in an episode, I'm in a depressive episode. My first episode was a manic episode, though. I take an antidepressant, two mood stabilizers, an antipsychotic, and another antipsychotic PRN. I get psychosis, mostly delusions and sometimes visual hallucinations, in both manic and depressed episodes, and I'm prone to mixed episodes as well. I'm usually in an episode, usually a depressed episode. I've had two friends and a relative who have Bipolar 1 as well but they all seemed manic way more than me. Instestingly, they were all men. You might have mentioned something about it and I didn't catch it, but it often seems like men are manic more often than depressed, just by casual observance.

It is only in recent years that I've become aware that I have bipolar 2. Currently, I am in a depressive cycle, and have been for 3 years, and 2 months. With age, the depressive cycles have become longer. I saw a psychiatrist, but she was not convinced that I have bipolar 2, based on my symptoms. However, the suddeness of the onset of depression and anxiety one day (literally) at the age of 21, did make it sound like a possibility to her. She put me on lithium, but I felt absolutely awful on it (physically ill). The experience put me off treatment, and currently I'm just on an anti-depressant. It truly does nothing for me, and I'm currently weaning myself off them 75mg at a time. (I was on 300mg.) When I started on this particular anti-depressant, it caused me to cycle, and I experienced the most blissful, hypo-manic 5 months. That is until a stressful event caused me to cycle back just over 3 years ago, and here I still am. When I'm hypo-manic, I image that's how "normal" people feel every day. I have energy, can go to gym, don't have cravings, so can do without sugar. I lose weight, all of which I regain in the depressive cycle. *Sigh* I'm at a loss as to how to proceed, really, because trying another mood stabiliser doesn't fill me with excitement.

I grew up in the Jehovah Witness cult. Children growing up in this cult are told they deserve to die because someone ate fruit 6000 years ago. There is a lot of shame and guilt. My parents would always say that «no matter what you do its not good enough, you deserve to die, mamma and daddy also deserve to die». We used to get weekly beatings at the kingdom hall for disipline. Still the organisation say that parents should teach the children not to love themselfes. My experience is that most children that grow up in high controll groups like LDS, JW and other cults are suffering from C PTSD. I often say that most cult children suffer from C PTSD and I think I am correct about this. I know I am not able to diagnose a group in general, but since all cult a variables of the BITE model I feel quite certain that it is the case. What would you recomend us cult children to look out for? Growing up with any religion following the BITE modell is like growing up in a village run by a psykopath were EVERYBODY are his flying monkeys and you will only be loved when you perform for the group. I was diagnosed with treatment resistant depression for 2 decades, then after a psychiatric ward admission I was diagnosed with bipolar 1 disorder. Now considered to be rapid cycling. I was on antidepressants on & off for years. Now psychiatrists say I need to avoid antidepressants.

I spend a lot more time in depression than mania. And getting my meds right took over a year and a lot of trial and error. I also always have worse depression in the winter months. So that complicates things. I also have ADHD and an axiety disorder. So that's fun. It took quite a while to get my med combo to treat everything. I'm finally not depressed. My ADHD is treated, so I can focus on life, and my anxiety is under control. I'm on antipsychotics, stimulant ADHD meds, and 2 different antidepressants that work a bit different to eachother. Latuda has been the best med for my bipolar symptoms so far. And it calmed my anxiety a bunch. I finally feel better without feeling like I want to crawl out of my own skin. I haven't been getting those horrible mixed episodes. I finally feel human again. My depressive episodes are much shorter and much more mild. And I haven't experienced the delusions or auditory hallucinations that come with bad manic episodes. I haven't experienced more than mild hypomania rarely for a good long time. I'd say that I get mild ups and downs now. And I feel like I can actually live my life.

For the last two years, I have taken 300-350 mg quetiapine and 20 mg vortioxetine every night, and it is the best combination ever. If I get too "high", I take 25-100 mg extra quetiapine + sleeping and relaxing medicine, and it works every time. I have had bipolar 1 for decades, starting out with a beautiful epiphany as a teenager. Many depressions, much suffering, lots of different kinds of medicine, but I got an education and a family too and was working part time. I guess the danger of trigging hypomania, mania, mixed state or rapid cycling is little, if you take antipsychotics too. I do get high quite often, it feels wonderful, and I know what is happening to me. I know I MUST SLEEP!!! I always stay at home alone, when I am high, dance a couple of hours and do all I can to sleep. It works every time, so I wake up next day quite "normal". I have these overwhelming intense, happy, sensual experiences, which actually enriche my life. I hope the same for all of you. Bipolar depression is hard to treat, but vortioxetine has helped me and two other persons, I know, with bipolar disorder.

The last time I took an antidepressant it elevated me too much until I was in quite a surreal state, but this only lasted about ten days and I crashed down really badly (still taking the antidepressant) and got more and more ill until someone who knew what was going on said "it's those pills!" I stopped taking them and the depression evaporated. In other words the antidepressant made things a LOT worse, and it wasn't a mixed state it was just depression. And it wasn't a case of taking pills and getting worse before I got better. I got worse and worse until I stopped the pills. Nasty!!

i don’t have 2x the amount of depressive episodes but my depressive episodes do last much longer than hypomanic or mixed states. my cycle seems to be hypomania for around 2 weeks then depression for 2 months then hypomanic again. i experienced on and off depressive episodes for about a year and a half before my first hypomanic. i haven’t had a “stable” (nor depressed or manic) episode since my first hypomanic either, the closest i have is periods where my depression becomes mild before hypomania . i do consider myself depression predominant though as my depression is far more debilitating than my hypomania, i always say the problem with hypomania isn’t how i feel it’s what i do. i may not be technically “depression predominant” but it definitely is the part that impacts my life the most. thinking about that would any mixed episodes (i have only had one so far) be categorised as time towards mania and/or depression? or completely separate? plus is it possible to experience true mania only when in a mixed state, with hypomania being my pure “high”? and would this change my diagnosis to bipolar 1? i ask this as my psychiatrist has recently noted my mixed episode as “psychotic mixed mania” not “psychotic mixed hypomania”, she’s professional with labels always describing my episodes as hypomania, so this took me by surprise. is this just standard practise? i always thought people with bipolar 1 were more mania predominant whereas bipolar 2 depression predominant. i’m waiting for her report but this will take a few weeks and i’m just really impatient, i want to know what’s going on with me😂

I believe i am manic predominant but was only recently diagnosed with bipolar this year. Looking back on periods of my life its very obvious to me when i was having manic episodes but it doesnt register with me at the time that I'm manic. I can definitely tell when i am having a depressive episode. My doctor put me on Latuda and i have felt so numb ever since. I think my brain registers the lack of mania or hypomania as depression because that's what I'm used to.

last year i was diagnosd with bipolar after having what seemed to be a manic episode. well, it was full-blown mania, with psychotic symptoms as well. the thing is that, i'm a post-op trans woman, and i had gone through a period where my estrogen intake wasn't regular. i've read some articles that say estrogen has an antipsychotic effect, and that women in menopause and after giving birth may experience bipolar manic and depressive episodes when the estrogen drops suddenly. i wonder if my manic episode was caused by fluctuations in my estrogen levels, and if my hormone therapy can prevent, or cause, manic psychosis to occur in the future.

Sadly that is my hi-point , from there most of the time …I’ll go down to miserable no energy no motivation no interest . Some doctors claim they suffer from bipolar disorder, while others claim they suffer from schizophrenia. Could you please make a video showing the difference between the symptoms of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder? Is it possible to have both mental disorders at the same time?

Reliving and learning about psychology and Indian philosophy bi polar is literally a identity separation where a individual is become is pushed themselves to a manic episode./ midlife crisis. Spiritual awakening. Being on the path if rebirth. Meditating will really help make sense of all these suppressed emotions that has cause us to become chemical unbalanced brain. Since one was never connected to themselves in the first place.

I have this important question I can't seem to get an answer to... Are Depressive and Manic Episodes affected by day-to-day experiences and emotional stimulus? I feel like I always dip into a set polarity when I'm in the wrong mindset at the wrong time and place, and I've just been trying to reorient myself before going into scenarios that could tilt me one way or the other. (I should probably find more support than just my isolated strategies.)

Thank you for the video! I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I have a question for you. I am diagnosed with bipolar type 2 and sometimes I question my diagnosis and feel like going off of my medication. My doctor and therapist have advised me not to do so while being very understanding of my feelings. Based of what they said, if I go off of my meds there is a risk that the episodes I was experiencing could be even worse. I wanted to know why that is. If I try going off my meds at some point, does this mean my episodes will be more severe for some reason? Is it because bipolar disorder gets worse with age or is it just that when you go off of meds it can trigger an episode? Thank you for taking the time to read this and for making all of your amazing content. You've really helped me.

Is it possible to change predominance? Like you start off with a prominence of one polarity, then years down the road end up with the predominance of the other? I ask because it seems at different points in my life I have had different predominant episodes. Hypomania when I was younger, early 20s. Now it's depressive. I'll be 30 this year.

I was diagnosed with Bipolar at 25 after having been diagnosed with Depression and BPD (The latter still stands) as young as 15 and 19 respectively. Recently I was diagnosed with Schizoaffective Disorder and I'm wondering if that means I still have a predominant polarity? I was mostly manic, but I'm starting to think the other end of Schizoaffective was making my mania worse than it would have been normally. Thanks for the video, always very helpful!

I was diagnosed with BD but my therapist doesn't seem to agree with the diagnosis because he hasn't seen any symptoms of hypomania so I didn't had it at all or I had it but didn't tell him (says him). Apparently every psychiatrist or therapist I ever had doesn't know a thing, they just expect me to diagnose myself and make a treatment for me alone while paying them. My memory is like crap and I can't figure if I'm hypomanic or just happy or just with anxiety or just anger, like, I know some things are not normal but when I tell people they say "everyone's like this". I'm not normal enough to be considered normal but I'm not "crazy" enough to have a label that I can use to find the best treatment for me. I can't function but I'm alive and not psychotic so I guess there isn't anything wrong with me? Guess it's super normal to treat a depression that goes away for a couple of days or maybe months and then return and then they increase the meds and it gets better but then it returns again and then you get 3 good days, 1 week existing with low energy and 3 days super depressed and it keeps circling back and it's almost previsible. I'm really beginning to hate medical professionals!!!
