With David Janssen, released on January 30, 1973. Final sequences were filmed at Utah's Wendover Airport, formerly Wendover AAF/AFB where project Silverplate B-29 crews trained to deliver nuclear weapons during WW2.
The Hughes 500C helicopter N9103F was substantially damaged (but not destroyed) on February 23, 1974 when it collided with a baggage cart during film work at the Hollywood-Burbank Airport (now named the Bob Hope Airport).

On June 19, 1977 Hughes 500C N9103F was involved in a mid-air collision with a Piper J3C-65 Cub N38101 at Waller, Texas. The helicopter was received minor damage. Sadly, there were two fatalities in the Cub.

On August 9, 2000 Hughes 500C N9203F was deregistered from the FAA's database and exported to Canada. Canadian registration is unknown.

The Sud Aviation (now Aerospatiale) SA-316B Lama helicopter N13583 was destroyed in a single-fatality crash on November 7, 1974 at Springerville, AZ during a ferry flight; flameout due to contaminated fuel.

I was 12 and already an aircraft nut when this came out, I remember laying on my folks living room floor and thinking, Ive never seen helicopter flying like this before. Still to this day, some of the best helicopter flying outside of a good airshow that you'll ever see.

Like many who have commented, saw this on TV when it was originally aired and it became an instant favorite. I was able to get it on VHS a few years ago but was also very disappointed about the music being changed. Would love it if it became available on BlueRay with the original score!

yes the same for me. I got it on DVD, same thing, music was all changed. I bought other movies too, same thing, all the music is changed. all because of copyright holders of the original music. They want HUGE AMOUNTS of money to allow their songs on new recordings. it sucks, but at least we have it here thanks to the uploader!

My sincere Thanks for posting this great CBS made for TV movie I watched with my dad when it originally aired. I've purchased two different releases of this on VHS and was so disappointed the original soundtrack had be butchered removing Three Little Fishes an integral part of the plot. It was really refreshing to FINALLY see this once again as I remember in January 1973, Thank You Very Much! Rod (Ogden, Utah)

It's great to finally see this movie again, after 40 years ! Thank you so much for posting. Between the real in flight footage, accurate engine, transmission, and rotor sounds for both ships, this movie is a symphony for the eyes and ears. Birds of Prey, Chopper 1 , Magnum PI, Blue Thunder, Airwolf...etc all motivated me to get my Helo license. I'm proud to report I actually got to fly a Hughes 369 for about 2 hours. It was a pure joy indeed !

My unreliable memory detects two missing scenes from this TV movie. First, a KBEX radio secretary reads Harry a letter from one of his THREE ex-wives; he's late with alimony...again. That is the reason for his flying to the Zion bank, where he spots the armored car robbery in progress. Second, some time during his pursuit of the bank robbers, he asks the KBEX weatherman, Karp, about the weather near Moab. Karp "complains" about hot TV lights and media attention before advising Walker to "get out your woolies!" This reminds me of edits made "to fit time allotted" or to sell, say, Preparation H.;)

Vin Dicator I believe on the released version the one song changed because they either lost, or did not get approval to use it. But they did not reshoot the scene, so you can hear the new song, but see that Janssen is still singing along to the original song, so no lip sync there. Also to note, and some others out there might remember this, in the original release full length movie, at the very beginning is a scene where Janssen starts his helicopter up in a hangar, a boy sets an empty tin can on the ground, and Janssen slaps the can silly with the skid of his helicopter, showing his piloting skills.

DonnieBass66 I don't remember that part. I've seen changes on old TV shows too. They play reruns of THE REBEL here, but they have removed THE REBEL Theme song by Johnny Cash and put in some instrumental music. The song is half the reason I used to watch the show!!!

Dan, I was about your age when I saw this movie in an art cinema (not commercial movies), the name of the movie was changed (as it occurs to mostly all of the american movies shown in Mexico). Until today, that I remembered the song sung by the helicopter pilot "three little fishies" that I could trace the name of the movie with it´s original name. I just wanted you to know that I share your enthusiasm for have found the movie. Regards

Vin, I know how you feel! There are quite a number of TV shows and movies produced over the years wherein the producers who came out with the DVD versions of these films have screwed them up by replacing songs, music, even the actor's dialogues with stuff that was never original to the show(s)! NYPD Blue, unfortunately, was one of those. Several times throughout the series on DVD I noticed that dialogues had been changed over what the actor or actress said during the original television showing. As a result, I refused to buy the series when it did become available. This crap is nothing new. Whether or not this practice is done for political reasons or perhaps not to offend some group of people, who knows? All I know is that when they changed the initial song "Three Little Fishies" at the start of this movie to some instrumental garbage, I went through a half dozen vhs & dvd copies (& returned them, too!!) only to realize that this song was never going to be released again with this movie.

Also a little history , the fighter planes are P40's . the American volunteers had 3 squadrons defending China. The Panda bears, The Adams and Eves , and Hells Angels. they racked up in just 6 months of fighting over 300 confirmed planes shot down. Their early victory came on Christmas day when they shot down 2 3rds of the bomber force attacking China. 29 bombers destroyed. They were one of the Elite fighter groups, led and taught by Claire Chennault. just in case anyone is curious. THE FLYING TIGERS they were named by the Chinese people after their first victory

When this was first released in 1973, I was 5, I would not have a real appreciation for this film until 1978 or so when it was aired on late night and I was 10. No slam on the uploader of this film, I am sure they did their best, but I really wish someone would upload a clearer better resolution version.
@NorthropN156

Like you, I would love for someone to post a higher quality version with the original soundtrack! I recorded this on VHS tape from the late night re-run broadcast, thus the relatively low resolution here as compared to today's standards. A few years ago when I couldn't find this movie online, I dug out my old tape, digitized it and uploaded it to RU-vid. Later I found a commercial DVD and bought it, expecting better quality than my home-made VHS tape. Although the DVD's visual quality is better, the DVD's soundtrack is unfortunately different from the 1970's broadcasts. Eventually I learned that this was due to song licensing issues when the commercial DVD was released.
@cameraman655
@cameraman655 6 лет назад
NorthropN156 Again, kudos and a great effort that is much appreciated. Sadly, most MFTV movies of that era were rarely archived and if they were they likely suffered degradation over the years and decades. I sincerely doubt there is a high quality copy in existence at least for public viewing. I suspect the DVD you found was likely a bootleg copy, I have made those purchases myself only to be disappointed in the overall quality.

There is a scene in the film during which Janssen's character stops a fuel truck on the road and refuels his helicopter. Someone wrote that all helicopters use jet fuel; they don't. It depends on the engine. Some helicopters have piston engines and use aviation gasoline, most commonly AVGAS 100LL, but many can also operate on gasoline. Most commercial helicopters as well as all combat helicopters use turbine engines, either one or two of them, and those use jet fuel, but there are exceptions. The helicopter used in the film is a Hughes 369 / 500 / OH-6.The engine has considerably fewer parts, mechanically is very reliable, produces reduced exterior noise, and runs on virtually any fuel: petrol (gasoline), diesel fuel, and aviation fuels. Similarly, the Swedish Stridsvagn 103 was the first tank to utilize a gas turbine, in this case as a secondary, high-horsepower "sprint" engine to augment the primary piston engine's performance. I would imagine the film's director relied on expert technical advice when making the movie. If one is still doubtful, call the local television station and ask if their pilots fly the Hughes 369 /500 helicopter; they likely do. The helicopters are often used commercially to broadcast the news, traffic situations, and other news-worthy events. The helicopter used in the film is easily identified.

Wow, you really know your pre-WWII history. We have a small airport in Chino (where I live) that has a large collection of WWII fighters, including some Warhawks and nice Mustangs. The P40 was a frickin' tank in the air. Its heavy plating saved many of those Flying Tigers. If you like a good read on that era, check out Sterling Seagraves' "The Soong Dynasty" -- a great fact-filled history of Pre-WWII China. I must've read it 35-40 years ago but I still remember it.
@kystars
@kystars 7 лет назад
Yes world war 2 history is my thing. I can give you details on every plane on every side. Yes the P40 was great , especially early in the war, it was the one fighter we had many of. It was used in many places around the world, including lend lease to Russia and Britain, and other allies. Of course later, the P51 was the knight of the sky later, but the p40 was no slouch. It did shoot down Me-109s down in Africa. I met Paul Tibbets back in the early 90s when he was still alive. You know the atomic bomber pilot over Hiroshima. I met him at the air force base, we shook hands , he said me name we talked a little. what a moment that was. I even met and worked with a former German solider from world war 2. That was interesting also. I also know 2 Germans, married, Gudrun and Hans, who were children when the Bombing was going on over Germany, and they got bombed on many times. They came down from Canada and I took them to the airplane museum where I showed them eventually the B17 Bomber. she looked at when I told her this is it.. and this B17 actually had bombed Germany. she looked at it a long time and cried a little. I had her touch the chin turret. It seemed to give her such relief to see it up close. I have really met some interesting people from world war 2.

Why were so many scenes of the girl & David Jansen shot in the dark? You couldn't hardly see them.

......... yeah one of the greatest movies I ever enjoyed when I was a kid David Johnson was my hero from The Fugitive the series and I even got to see some photos that nobody on Earth has ever seen to him in Vegas drunk out of his mind being held up by a bunch of Showgirls with feathers on their head...... the guy was totally zonked it was probably reeling from the information he had cancer or whatever maybe not I don't know great movie I always thought that friendship Aristotle whatever it is what is a gazelle I think that's what I thought it was it what kind of helicopter and of course that helicopter chance and was flying is still I think it's still in production scorpion wasn't it...?.... anyway yeah they got this on VHS I borrowed it wants from the Library and then I found it on eBay I think I had a DVD of it and I think you're right they changed that swim baby swim swim if you can so they swam and they swam all over the dam song 219 forties jazz I don't know maybe it was a copyright infringement they do crap like that sometimes Hollywood in the Jews and the Zionist but anyway it was a great movie and wasn't political like that Vietnam movie he was in with John Wayne it was just a guy trying to do the right thing a good premise a guy with good-natured Soul trying to do what he could in the time when America was just like that..... airplanes yeah that's a b**** real expensive to get your pilot's license and then really expensive to fly these days but I found a really cool RC model of the f9f panther eject they came up with back in the day a fluid all over Korea and they got an RC model kit yeah yeah I know a little something about those Fairchild Republic Grumman Aerospace days I even got a chance to draw a blueprint or two for the e-2c in fact I think that guy what was his name oh yeah I remember now Dave Uncle Dave he designed ef9 of Panther he designed the cougar he designed the kitten he built all of them they manufacture them he manufactured and designed and built the Grumman goose the widget a lot of amphibious aircraft yeah the guy was nuts about airplanes and cats I'm just nuts.... but I like cats a lot to..... it seems everybody in this crazy family is nuts about cats and believe me I know I'm well they're a bunch of nuts nobody even wants to but that's another story wait for the movie I guess...... I met red fox.... Jan-Michael Vincent Carol Burnett once I got to know a bunch of those feeling freaks out and Hollywood once or twice weird existence out there... lots of hot babes I ended up with the meatball from All in the Family old Ford..... got to know a bunch of really interesting people but that's not my Cuppa tea I sure would like to meet David Jensen but it's probably just like any other guy trying to have a little fun in his off time anyway good movie enjoyed it thanks for copying it from the TV and putting it on the internet I don't have a copy anymore but maybe I'll go out and get one soon thanks much

I saw this in the mid 70s and thought then and even now its some of the best helicopter stunt flying I have ever seen in a movie, another movie came out in the 80s called Deadly Encounter with Larry Hagman with the same basic plot but in my opinion this is still better as most originals are.

I remember this movie when I was in Jr High. We waited for for months. They didnt make movies where the helicopter was the star back then. The Green Beret and this movie and Apocalypse Now led me into the Helicopter industry. Its an addiction worse than drugs or alcohol......and more expensive.

Don't forget "The Hot Rock" (1973) with Robert Redford and more importantly; the "wheel man" Ron Lieberman. His character reminded me of my Grandfather, he could operate almost any vehicle, no matter how large, or complex. He told us it was a way to eat to survive during the depression.

My apologies to Aileen Wagner, who's comment I inadvertently deleted. Fortunately I can re-post it from the email notification: "I did not understand the description. Are u saying that both helicopters from this movie we're destroyed? One from a luggage cart and the other from contaminated fuel? Sorry, I just didn't get. This is a great movie!!"

+John Hutsenpiller Slight correction here: the bad guys'helicopter was an SA315B Aerospatiale Lama. A beefed up version of the Alouette II, with the Alouette III- engine. Altered landing gear and three bladed tail rotor compared to the Alouette II.

+Teh Hoorf You're right, I see! So the end credits must be wrong. Googling the helicopter reg. nr. N13583 (visible at 30.35) brings up the helicopter data; the make, type, manufacturing date. etc.. Interesting but tragic find: this very helicopter crashed shortly after the recording of this movie, with the pilot/ sole occupant as fatality..

***** what, that Doctor Kimble wouldn't be caught dead singing that ridiculous song? or that her grandmother used to sing it to her when she was little also? Either way that's pretty funny Lol. Your mom and I would probably get along fine! Seriously, the character of Kimball was so reserved and quiet which was the appeal for many women. . That little song was just way below David Janssens dignity, lol .
