@@tonyfraser1749 I have witnessed many Chinese local councils stick to wrong fiscal policy due to lack of the option of bankruptcy to void debts and restart. Thus they have accumulated the snow ball to apocalyptic scale.

@@JohnButcher-vx9xf So giving large amounts of money to councils while there was a banking crisis was a good idea. The reason we had no money was because of the amount of debt labour ran up. There was a clause in the Maastricht treaty that triggers if a countries (sorry i mean states) debt reaches a certain % of GDP. That clause triggered at the end of the labour government in 2009 and the COALITION government had to put forward a plan to the EU to cut the debt. Apart from the cut in public spending it included Raising Retirement Age, & Raising VAT to 20%. The Tory (and Lib Dem) austerity plan was actually caused by Labour and ordered by the EU. Of course you wasn't told this because the feelings about the EU were already running hot. If remainers knew we were going through "austerity" because of EU rules i wonder if they would have still voted remain ? Labour and Lib Dems have used "Tory Austerity" as a political football and it is ironic that one caused it and the other helped bring it in.

Exactly, that's taxpayer money. If there's a surplus of cash it should be going back into the pot not into people's pockets. Councils are there to provide services. And that's it. And they should do it at the absolute minimal cost to the taxpayer. Let's hope this affair will see a change. We have FAR too many people "working" for the state in this country.

The amount raised (in the Budget) by Council Tax for 2023/2024 is £429M, so just 2 times for 2 years to "raise" £858M. Don't get me wrong, I live in Birmingham and am not happy about this and wouldn't want to have to pay more Council Tax because of the ineptitude of the Council over the years.

Lets scrap the idea about Tax Benefit, can we make a rule that you can receive support only for 5-6 yeras, and then you have to work 10 yeras at least to count yourself for additioanl 5-6 years. This would be fair I think.

Just half the work force of these councils. Make the buggers do a proper day's work and scrap all non-essential services IMMEDIATELY.

Council workers never had gold-plated pensions. It's just a final salary scheme based on average earnings.
