We received a request from James' fiance. She mentioned he was a big fan of the channel and wanted to know if we could help surprise him for his birthday. Timing worked out perfectly, so we headed off to surprise him.
I've seen lots of people struggle with their engine starting procedures, so I share mine for the Baron.

I love watching you guys fly and wish I was up there. I used to own a piper Cherokee 180 and had to give up flying and my plane do to finances. Now I drive a semi wishing and dreaming I was flying. I'm a disabled vet who has always had the bug just not the money to fly and really wish I could get back in to it. So thank you and Kim for posting your videos so that people like me can still see the inside of a cockpit. Jason

I used to fly B55 and B58's and a Navajo on feight operations in Australia. That meant a lot of start-stop operations. ... and I found that the Piper "book" start worked great in the Barons, and the Baron "book" start worked great on the Navajo.... Go figure. On the Baron, if it didn't start on the first turn, I would "blip" the fuel pump switch once or twice. That was all it needed.

310 pilot has the stech 3100 in their Cessna 310 and seem to love it. They also have the ifd 550 and 540 and from what I’ve seen, they love it and haven’t had any problems

I thought Kevin also demo'd the garmin before the stech in his 310. I'm not 100% positive on that. Both are great systems.

Ive had both and love the garmin 500 the most. It’s extremely easy to use and doesn’t chase altitudes or gps routes.

That Foreflight taxi assist feature is amazing. I hope Navigraph "borrows" some of that functionality for us sim pilots, because it's even harder to taxi at unfamiliar airports in MS Flight Simulator because their airport signage is so hard to see.

310 Pilot installed the STEC 3100 and loves it, even has a video on its virtues you might like to view. Enjoy you video's.

The 3100 is probably the route you’ll go with your Avidyne’s and the Aspen. We installed a GFC-500 in our PA32R-300 with two IFD540s and had difficulty with the under speed protection the -500 has and VNAV. We ended up swapping in two Garmin GTNxi’s to get it all to work with our G5s. Also the yaw damper is essential once you have it. Those that have yd will tell you that. Whatever you decide on make sure it all integrates well and you’ll be amazed at what a modern autopilot can do. Good luck

Just wondering, why isn't the Avidyne AP in the mix? It's supposed to integrate well with the Aspen.

@@christophehamal8434 while the DFC-90 is a very capable autopilot, it really is a direct replacement for the STEC-55 found in many older Cirrus aircraft and lacks VNAV and Flight Director guidance for takeoff..

Hi Kim & Chris, Firstly thank you for all the time and effort you spend doing the filming and editing. Re the auto pilot I would recommend you contact Kevin and Jamie the 310 pilot and S4 Aviator, he flies Lear's and a 141A, two years ago they updated the panel including the autopilot. Chris, you might reach out to Kevin and Jamie (310 pilot) about the S-TEC. They might be able to tell you how it works with the Avidyne setup. I’ve used the Garmin autopilot (with G1000) and it works awesome.

Do the S-TEC autopilot. I have the Garmin in my 182, but I also went G5's for the primaries. GFC 500 will have you adding more than just the AP to work and I would be curious to see the compatibility with the Avidyne GPS. That all said I love George best co-pilot you could ask for. Building a hold and watching the 650 and the GFC 500 work together to plan and fly from entry through the hold plus the approaches really does take the single-pilot IFR environment down a notch.

The questions that Kim asks are concise, relevant, and on point. That show interest and understanding of the topic. Super smart! Great job on the ceramic coating. Should keep your baby looking great for a long time with minimal upkeep. For directions I remember "East is Least, West is Best". Least being odd thousands +500 West being even. 0 to 179=E 180 to 359 = W. At least, that is what I was taught. Been a long time since I was in school.. lol Great flight, thanks for sharing.

It is a personal choice, with pros and cons a strong pro for me with the Garmin is that it is used accross more aircraft which for me is a benefit, but as i say it a personal thing

I recently flew with the Garmin GFC500 coupled with 2 G5’s and the GTN650. It really is a great autopilot and I love the controls on the unit itself and the self level feature. I don’t have any experience with the STEC but that price tag is pretty high and I’m not really sure what the advantages of that over the Garmin are.

Another great video man. I've got a 414AW with a GFC600. Should be down in Naples with the airplane for at least a week in January. I'd be happy to take you for a spin and show you the ins and outs. My two second thoughts are simple. If you've already got an upgrade compatible STEC autopilot (like a 55X) than you can't beat the price of the 3100 upgrade. But if you're going to be paying full price for either, the GFC600 is a vastly superior autopilot. Better processor, better handling, better documentation, better display, better servos, the list goes on and on. Come check it out!

Beautiful airplane, beautiful woman - classic marketing. There is, of course, a lot more to flying the Baron, and to Kim, than just marketing your Channel. So, what I would love to see from you is dialing in on the various aspects of flying the Baron, as you did with engine start in this video, and for Kim to accept this a challenge, documenting her progress to the left seat. Great channel. With much admiration, you guys are “living’ the dream”

Guys are doing just good. I enjoyed this watching pilots learn how to fly airplane and get the information under your belt so you could fly a plane from the beginning of my experience teacher. And Kim is doing great? I know what she could do. She's im proven and she's right? I think I'm almost ready to go on the road and fly her own plane and that's up to her. I wish her a very nice woman and lady she's pretty.

@4:33 I was wondering why your steam-gauge altimeter was showing you buried in the ground. Then I saw that your baro setting wasn't set to 30.10 . But that may be due to offset error on the camera view.

You are not wrong. However since Florida is narrow and most traffic is N/S, Florida ATC has northernly traffic fly at ODD altitudes.

Superb start procedure. No hesitation with fire up. Love the software improvement. Just wish every aircraft had software to shut engine/ engines off if pre takeoff procedures dangerously ignored!! Garmin! I have never used the stec 3100 but I did have the stec 55 on a cirrus SR20 and it did not hold a candle to my Garmin G500 I had installed in my Cherokee 6. 4 axis and it does approaches beautifully. Set up nice and easy to use.

Hemispherical Cruising Altitudes - VFR and IFR Cruising Altitudes VFR Cruising Altitudes VFR Cruising Altitudes VFR Cruising Altitudes VFR Pilots flying on a magnetic course (track) of 0 degrees through 179 degrees should fly any odd thousand foot MSL (Mean Sea Level) altitude plus 500 feet. Example VFR Cruising altitudes would be 3,500 feet, 5,500 feet, 7,500 feet etc. VFR Pilots flying on a magnetic course (track) of 180 degrees through 359 degrees should fly any even thousand foot MSL altitude plus 500 feet. Example VFR Cruising altitudes would be 4,500 feet, 6,500 feet, 8,500 feet etc. Vertical Separation These VFR Cruising Altitudes provides a minimum of 1,000 feet clearance or vertical separation from other VFR airplanes heading in opposing directions.

I'm not a pilot, but as you replaced the engines not too long ago, are they not available with counter rotating props? I'm only asking as you mentioned a slightly disproportionate power level on take off.

That would require a STC to make a change like that. Way to costly.
