The antenna on the hydrant is a snow flag. It allows plow drivers to see it and not hit it, or bury it. And it allows firefighters to locate the hydrant.
@@TheDailyWoo When you were at the leaning tower YMCA you were standing right next to shure microphones. The lobby alone was quite impressive I know you know shure. Do you need a tour guide?
Worked in Chicago several years ago and I would often drive by the Disney home and envision Roy and Walt playing in the yard.....now I live 10 minutes from Disney World.....Amazing how much our lives have been impacted by the Disney family.....
Thank you Adam. Family Matters was a great show from the 90’s. I met Rosetta LaNoire when I was teenager. Her car broke down and she was waiting inside the Video Store for her son to pick her up. Us neighborhood teenagers couldn’t believe that we were meeting “Mamma” from “Give me a break”! Such simpler times in 1985. One I cherish and will never forget. Thank you Rosetta. ♥️
Fun Fact: " did I do that " was not in the original script, the guy playing urkel decided that the character needed a catchphrase, so when he went to the executive producers and director with the idea, they loved it so much that the famous phrase "did I do that " was born all thanks to jaleel white aka Steve urkel.
A statue commemorating comedian Bob Newhart’s role as Dr. Robert Hartley on “The Bob Newhart Show” including a photo op psychologist couch is in downtown Chicago near the office building shown in the TV classic’s opening credits. I think it's located real close to Navy Pier. “Hi Bob!” was a frequent greeting on the show, which was set in Chicago and ran on CBS from 1972 to 1978. Hartley was a successful psychologist living in a high-rise apartment with his wife, Emily, played by Suzanne Pleshette. Bob Newhart was born and raised on the edge of Chicago in a suburb called Oak Park.
My friend Joe lived in the family matters house. We went to Prescott school right there on Ashland Ave. I lived in Lil street hostage house. If you Google it you get info on it. It is the next block over from Wrightwood! My wife grew up in a famous house right east of there on the 1220 w Wrightwood! There's a book about the house and the family. I lived in the area till 2014. My parent's still live right west of Ashland on Paulina street. It was cool we sat in the park as they were filming and then it was cool to hangout in the house afterwards! I'm 48 years old now.
Morning Adam the "antenna" you spoke of on the fire hydrant is a marker to find the hydrant during winter when snow plows push snow so high the hydrant gets buried in snow banks... have a safe trip.
The yellow brick road and mural was a fitting tribute. Well done! It wasn't about the house their it was about a tribute to the author, and it was done with class.
This is going to be a fun week for me. I have lived in Chicago and the suburbs for almost 70 years! I passed the leaning tower many many times in my yout. I am going to heartily enjoy you in my town. Thanks so much!
If you have time, the house where the original Little Orphan Annie was written (the cartoon strip) is in downtown Lombard, about 20 miles west of Chicago. The town also has an original Dairy Queen sign in front of a small Dairy Queen (walk up only), that is land-marked in downtown as well.
Ex-film crew guy (Shawshank etc) and ex-Chicagoan here. In town also. Just saw the Hughes North Suburb locations last week (Home Alone House, Bueller's lake retreat, Breakfast Club exterior school). As well as Groundhog Days - Woodstock, IL town square - 1st time there since being an extra in 1992. Enjoy the trip.
Several years ago while the Disney Birthplace was just starting the restoration I interviewed one of the people who was overseeing a lot of the fundraising, he was also (and still is) the guy who runs Micechat (Dusty Sage). He gave me a nice framed illustration of the home. It has been used over the years as a children’s creative center, which is certainly appropriate!
Welcome to Chicago! It’s so fun seeing you in areas I’m familiar with. Congress theater brings back memories, I’ve seen many bands there back in the day! Have a great time 🙂
I did not realize that Walt Disney grew up in Chicago, but it is definitely a city with a lot of creativity. L Frank Baum's hometown of Chittenango, New York, also has a "yellow brick road" throughout the town in Upstate NY, not too far from Binghamton, New York, where Twilight Zone creator Rod Sterling grew up.
Great episode! Loved it so much. Chicago is a very special place. We drove to Chicago from Austin over the July 4th weekend after 16 months of Covid isolation and enjoyed the entire trip immensely. Can’t wait for your next episode, Adam. Thank you!
Oh, wow. So the company DOES know they tore down the Winslow house! Such shame. I think they could have made it a tourist attraction like the Christmas Story house.
Hey Adam! If you're gonna be in Chicago over the next couple days, I highly recommend visiting Galloping Ghost Arcade on Brookfield. It's a truly magical place.
AWESOME VLOG ADAM ! Nice to see where the Disneys lived. Then seeing the Leaning Tower, Wizard of Oz, and Family Matters spots. I so look forward to your Vlogs, Thank you ! :)
FYI...The Pickwick Theater was also a filming site for the opening of the TV show "At The Movies" hosted by Siskel and Ebert....I was there the night they filmed it.
Thank you for visiting my home. I learned more about my city. I will have to check out a few of these places. I grew up in the neighborhood of Disney. Enjoy your stay in Chicago.
Walt's folks had two houses here in Portland Oregon, If you ever make it here, I would love to show ya Woo. 🕶✌ This was very interesting and sooo cool, over the last few years I've really gotten into the history of Disney even tho I've never been, It'll happen.
The "antenna" on the fire hydrant is a locator pole, in case it snows higher than the actual fire hydrant Fire trucks can find it and Plows wont hit it when they plow either, Just an FYI Great Video and great trip Adam, This will be a good series of videos!
Had to do a bit of googling during your vlog, as to why that Niles tower was a replica of Pisa, unless I've read wrong it was to conceal a water tower, i thought Walt and Roy's home in my head would have more security, to stop Disney nuts from trying to get in to his old home, wouldn't mind having a nosey around the house myself, let's be honest got to be one of the most famous people in the world, speaking for myself, have some fantastic memories from both parks, that i treasure, loving these guided tours Thankyou Adam
My dad performed in a school play there back in the 1940s! I grew up in Park Ridge, IL. I'm so glad you are featuring The Pickwick Theater. It's iconic!
I thought for a minute you were going to miss that I saw it right away and I was hoping you were going to catch it and I'm glad you did they enjoy the video and Vlogs it is great keep up the great work
And, Hillary Rodham Clinton's childhood home is two blocks north of Harrison's home. They both went to the same high school but just missed each other. He graduated the year before she started as a freshman.
That "antenna" is to mark where the hydrant is when it snows. Chicago my home town, lived not far from the Disney Home. This is Chicago proper not a suburb. When very young lived on Humboldt St. I did not know Baum lived there or wrote Wizard of Oz there! Thanks so much, next trip home will have to see the yellow brick road.
HEY ATW...NOW THIS WAS SOMETHING VERY EXCITING! THANK YOU for trudging all the way to Chicago to get some AWESOME content. There is so much to see, if your travelling with TheDailyWoo!! YOW! You really do your homework when traveling! The "Leaning Tower" was so close to the real deal ! I can't wait to see what you have for tomorrow! BTW, it seems like the Disney name has something to do with every state!?!!
That theatre in the beginning look art Deco like it was built in 1925. Thanks for sharing the town area.... much appreciated.👍👍🙂 Stay Safe lm the same age as Steve Urkel I like the show "Family Matters" is was great. 📺
Although I have very strong family ties there, I just took my first trip to Chicago last year. A highlight was visiting the Disney home. Considering the connection with L. Frank Baum, there must be something in the air there. Several miles away, near the Biograph Theater, I visited the apartment house my grandfather built and where my mom grew up. It surprised me how whimsical it is, with a colorful inscription attached to the building that reads, "DAS HAUS IST MEIN UND DOCH NICHT MEIN DER NACH MIR KOMT IST AUCH NICHT SEIN." My mom recited that many times when I was a child. I did a little research on the gym nearby where my mom performed gymnastics. The gym was part of a 19th century philosophical movement that promoted the election of Abraham Lincoln. I noticed a very high number of references to Lincoln in that specific area. After I put all this together, it does not seem surprising that the creator of "Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln" was born nearby.
We won a trip to see “Live” in Chicago ( technically outside of town ) back in the late 90s. Got a rental car and ran around the area. Saw some places where they filmed Blues Brothers.
I am sure someone has already said, but just in case not, the antenna on the fire hydrant is for when it snows, so they can be found by the fire department. Also, it keeps them from being hit by snow plows.
So cool to have you doing videos in my area. This is how I found this channel when I tried to go into the old Maine North High School (Breakfast Club school) and it didn't work out well so I tried to see if anyone on RU-vid went in and you got the same result that I did lol. If you're in Arlington Heights or Elmwood Park is the original, you MUST try Johnnie's Beef. Get a beef and sausage (juicy) combo and an Italian Ice. It's the best in or around Chicago. Go White Sox!
Heyy Woo! Another stop suggestion would be, "Winnetka" Illinois to go see the "Home Alone" house!!! Short drive and the town is beautiful! Even if you don't want to document it just for yourself!!! There's alot of film locations for Home Alone! 👌😊
So glad you are here in Chicago Adam. Glad the sun is out today but it is chilly still. Enjoy your stay, so much to see and so many neighborhoods to choose from!
Immediately when I saw your shirt and the title of the the video, I thought about the tie-in with Great Movie Ride, Wizard of Oz and Walt Disney. Great video!
I love Disney, L. Frank Baum all things Wizard of Oz great classic movie and Family Matters one of the great comedy sitcoms shows. Did I Do that!? Lol great video vlog Adam!!
I live in Colrain MA. The birthplace and home of the Calls, the maternal grandparents of Walt Disney who moved to FL after Mr. Call became a teacher. They are still lots of Calls here and Call road too.
Just received my stickers and pins in Westport, CT. THANK YOU Adam. I will strategically place the stickers around Connecticut sites that are up for Adventure and Exploration. Maybe if your ever in this neck of the woods you will find one. Shall You!
I was going to say the same thing about the "antenna" atop the fire hydrant. In my community, the "antenna" gets removed when the threat of snow is gone and gets put back on in the autumn. My dad used to work near the leaning tower. Welcome to the Greater Chicago area! I am in Elgin, IL. I believe the Home Alone house is now a B & B
Adam, the pickwick theatre had a famous visitor once. The king of pop did a commercial shot there. The flag on hydrants are so firefighters can find them in snow. Leaning tower has the same degree lean. The distance on the plaque is how many feet the top leans over. Hermoso is a neighborhood not a suburb.
It's always awesome to see you visit places in my area! My husband and I were giggling at the "antenna" on the fire hydrant. Those poles are super important in the winter or a plow will easily take it out. There is so much to see out this way...hopefully you are able to stay a few days to explore more!
Follow the yellow brick road.👠As I am singing it...Mural of Robin was something else! Nice they put a brick marker ion the house! Thanks for taking me there. ☮💛
The Pickwick Theater is great. I've seen a few movies in there as well as a live band. You were just 15 to 20 minutes away from us in Des Plaines. The weather was awful on Wednesday. At least it stopped raining for a short time. 🙂
Hello Adam! If you ever decide to come to Frank L Baum's birthplace, Chittenango, NY, I would be more than happy to tour you around. Thanks for another great video!!
Did I do that??? (Sorry, couldn't resist) So grateful that ATW Historian is on the job documenting these absolute cultural gems! Always enjoyed Family Matters too. Friday night tradition. Are you heading to Detroit? Couple of Disney connections (I'm sure you're aware) Walt was inspired by Greenfield Village for Main St. Belle Isle housed the Carousel from MK. I live across the Detroit River in Windsor in view of Belle Isle. Wave lol! 👋
So happy your in Chicago I love ❤️ that place been there once in my life and now you and I must say this video was a history overload and I was in heaven and I want to thank you for sharing the history of all the places you visited and when you were talking about Family Matters and you being a little bummed out and then seeing the the sign that said Family Matters I could kinda hear you getting a little teary eyed and it made me think that it was nice that there was a little piece of that show left behind the Family Matters sign and it was nice to know that not all was lost great video Adam now with that being said peace ☮️ love ❤️ and happiness to you Adam and I’ll see you on the next vlog adventure wherever it takes you also please be safe out there and don’t forget the Perfect Stranger filming location peace ☮️ out ✌️
I would have never guessed that Walt , Roy and their family had roots in Chicago. Nice, thank you for sharing 🌺🧡 Enjoy the sound of the rain also. Be safe, stay warm
Ermagrr you are 3 hours from me .. hope you're headed towards Indy comic con .. be awesome to see u there Adam . This was a great day in the windy city ..
Very true Walt needed Roy’s help for the financial side of the company and thanks to Roy Oliver Disney Walt Disney World was finished for all the world to see. Would love to visit this house one day . In fact my birthday is Feb 6 1986 just one hundred years after Elias Disney was born! Loved watching Family Matters too bad the houses are torn down.
Adam i ordered us a Adopt -A-Brick for the Museum in MO . I would of used IG to message you but i figured this was easier . Love the video as always . Lots of Love ❤
Yes it’s so the plows know where the hydrants are so they don’t hit them with the plows. Also if there is a fire in the winter the firemen know where the hydrants are in deep snow. We also have those antennas on the hydrants in New Jersey. 👍
