The low frequency booming sounds of Eurasian bitterns - Botaurus stellaris.
If you're ever exploring a wetland in Europe around spring time, you might hear a curious low frequency sound. that is repeated countless times in short sequences. It sounds like a cross between a bull mooing and a foghorn and it can carry for more than 3 miles on a quiet night. In good wilderness areas that support large populations of bitterns, this becomes a continuous droning sound that overtakes anything around these low frequencies.
Bitterns are thick herons with cryptic plumage and a rather shy demeanor. They're not easy to photograph or even see, but during the mating season the booming sounds of the males can easily be heard. I've experienced them in several places in Europe but I was never able to get close enough to record them well. Until my trip to Sweden in 2017 that is. That's when I captured these good recordings of a male calling in a shallow pond. A lovely and refreshing take on "birdsong".
