Bix3 build

This Bix3 was so cheap on the HK summer sale that I couldn't resist. PNP for A$83, and it came with the Boxler Kit (joke). It has some very nice design changes from the Bixler 2 and a very different wing airfoil with under-camber and enormous ailerons and flaps. The large canopy, FPV mount and quick release wings are excellent additions. A large battery is required for correct CG placement, 3000 3S worked OK. Max current draw is 20A and the ESC is only 20A which is poor design, should be 30A. The motor in typical Bixler style has a horrible whine sound and the shaft has been lathed down to an odd size less than 3mm.

I love my bix3 . I've put a large turnigy outrunner on mine with a 10" prop. tundra wheels and big 6600mah battery and a UHF system. its great for long range fpv! love it!

Sounds like a monster truck beast mate. Amazing it carries all that but that wing does have lots of lifting power.

Have flown mine almost to death over the past 2.5 yrs. Always has the first flight of the day, to settle the nerves, get the brain and thumbs into gear. When I get bored, I cut the throttle, and glide around for half hour or so. Loops easily, but rolls -- needs a lot of down elev when inverted. 2700mah battery for balance and long flight times. Tape down the back of fuse to keep pushrods on fuse. 2 slots in floor up front for a Velcro strap for battery securing. Doesn't need flaps, but with flaps can land from 30 - 40m high at 60degrees - good fun. Don't have 1 or 2 so no comparison, but actually very robust, including motor pod. My video on RU-vid used the plywood camera mount. Keith.
@AndrewNewton
@AndrewNewton 7 лет назад
Thanks for the tip Keith. The 3 is more of a glider and weight carrier than the 2 but less aerobatic. Designed for FPV cruising I would say

Flitetest guys has some bixler-type model, but that one is heavy as brick and would have just very small part of original flight characteristics.. Bix3 looks not bad.
@davidlondon3111
@davidlondon3111 7 лет назад
Hi Andrew - 2 years late for me :( but good review. I took the tail wheel off. Seems to fly much better. I never used the front wheels. Also used some of that fibreglass reinforced tape on the fuselage underside to reduce damage on the spiky grass. I used this model to learn about crow, reflex and flaps. I replaced the aluminium spar with a carbon fibre tube after a bad landing bent the aluminium. I put fluoro tape on the wing retention things for when I drop them. I turned on esc braking on the esc so the prop doesn't autorotate and cause drag when gliding.

Great vid, you may find the motor shaft is 2.3mm, (measure with a vernier) they sell those on ebay for $4 for 5 of them, I'm interested to see how it fly's with the flaps and the ailerons together! I have a moded bixler2 which amongst other things, has a 1450kv motor with a apc 8x6 prop pulling around 300watts and at full speed the ailerons are erratic, the 9grm servo's cannot handle the EXISTING ailerons at such higher speeds, so I cant wait to see what happens with DOUBLE the surface area! :-D
@AndrewNewton

I'll change to decent metal gear aileron servos soon, but the existing servos are coping fine at the moment.

Just received the kit version. No servo, no electronics etc. Fuselage isn't glued together either and upon separating the two halves I discovered a small aluminum plate with 2 countersunk holes mounted low near the belly. I'm guessing this is for mounting some unnamed accessory but unless you know of a legit use for the thing think I may just leave it out to save weight. BTW, Can you recommend a good glue for this foam -- I was planning to using UHU POR. Cheers!

@AbhinavSubramanian
@AbhinavSubramanian 6 лет назад
The name change...is a bit of a long story. Hobbyking used to be a sponsor for Flitetest and so they named a plane after Josh Bixler. What happened though is that Flitetest dropped HK as a sponsor so it wouldn't seem like they were being impartial to HK's products. HK renamed the next iteration of the product the Bix as a sort of way of giving him the finger while still making the product recognizable as a member of the Bixler series.

Hello, I bought a bix 3, it's my first rc plane, what is the effect if I join the flaps with the ailerons like you did?

That give you more roll control, making it more aerobatic. You dont really need flaps to start with. Just use the ailerons if you want to keep it simple.

Bix 2 flies the best in my opinion, uses 2200 mAh 3S (or bigger if desired). Bix 3 has more space and easier wing removal but it can catch you surprise with tip stalls and needs 3000mAh 3S battery for correct CG. Bix 2 is by far my favourite.

i love this plane, just like your vids! i do use the flaps, they work well to slow it down on landing otherwise these gliders need a bigger landing strip then an A380 ;) My fuse got damaged on nosedive after FPV failed me, so it's great to see HK have spare parts in the shop now. just waiting for EU shop to stock up again... also the smallCNC-parts adjustable motor mount is a fab add-on allowing for a larger prop for one thing ( smallpartscnc.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=181 )
