BJJ Technique - Guard Pass vs Crazy Legs - Firas Zahabi

In this video I cover how to pass the Guard vs a very flexible opponent. Every gym has at least one super flexible member on the mat and it can be very frustrating to pass the guard when using traditional pass and position. In this video I show you a different strategy that helps vs those crazy legged BJJ guys.

Wow that mount escape at 0:55 is crazy and I have some very flexible legs myself.

That guard retention is just incredible, and to figure out how to beat it is very clever indeed. It lets me know just how much of a beginner I am after 15 years of training.

For the record, yesterday i had a sparring session with someone who has a super range of mobility into his legs/hips area. It was so frustrating, then today i did search for a video to get over that crazy legs issue. Finally, i found out this super detailed video.... great! THANK YOU for sharing.

Master Firas I can never thank you enough for your excellent videos! I love your thoughtful and insightful approach, everything you say makes perfect sense and you explain the necessity of every step so soundly, it truly is world class advice you give to all of us. My preferred way to deal with crazy legs is credit card passing and then when they weave in the far leg instantly changing to reverse kesa gatame, which also puts you in a position to fend off the legs. I also find that transitioning to knee on belly with the knee riding more on the hip and if necessary spinning into north south helpful, and I can't wait to give this a try!

@turmat01
@turmat01 8 лет назад
yeah genetics help a lot. I've attended one of Eddie's seminars at 10th planet Montreal a few years back and he nicknamed me mr. Flexibility lol. Never really stretched in my life. I'm just naturally super flexible. now sadly I don't really have any BJJ gyms near me, so I never got really good in BJJ, but when I have the chance to roll, my flexibility really helps a lot. I've had a guy let go of an armbar, he though my arm had broken or something. I wasn't even feeling pressure yet XD. I wish I had the dedication and a place to train near me :( Shawn, you train(ed) at 10th planet Montreal I think right? I'm pretty sure I've seen your name on many of Louis' posts :P

Hi Firas! First of all, thank you so much for the information you share. I have a question with the technique that starts at 3:35 where you are passed the opponents legs> Drop the shoulder + Hug the hips> Step over, lock his legs with yours, and drop your hips=immobilizing their hips+legs> enter mount. Would this be a prime strategy for entering mount from side control against anyone, and also a prime strategy in passing all guards? If your opponents legs are immobile(like they are in the technique) then he/she would be unable to bridge off the mat to get any space between you & them to use frames>escape back to a guard. Basically what I am asking is your thoughts of using this against all opponents rather than specifically partners with crazy legs. Also, if you wouldn't use this against everyone, why?

I have a detailed question about a counter. If you X pass to your left, just before you drop you shoulder to his chest, your right leg is close to the right side of his hip. What's to stop him from doing a backward roll over his right shoulder and his left leg in between your legs for a leg lock? Not sure if that made sense.
@CoachZahabi

Don't forget I'm in total control of his hips. How can he back roll with and my weight pinning his hips.

Awesome video! One issue I have every once in a while when I pass low on the legs (which is my favorite type of passing) is that the guy on the bottom pushes my head away and shrimps out, which is quite a struggle when said guy is strong. How do you deal with that?

Firas do you know what's next for Joe Duffy? Are you looking for a top 15 match up against somebody such as Al iaquinta ( who has a previous loss on his record to Mitch Clarke). I believe this would make a great match up to get Joes name out there. Do you have any opinions on this? looking forward to seeing him compete again

Firas, one problem, as I'm doubling off on the legs the other guy stiff arms me and sit up shrimps away, do I just have to fight to climb his body faster than he can get away or is there a technical detail I'm missing?
@CoachZahabi
@CoachZahabi 8 лет назад
1. Did you remember to stay on your toes and drive your shoulder into his hips?All you weight has to be on your opponents hips. 2. If he is still shrimping away, you jump to the other side with you legs while still holding the double. Remember to switch your head side also. Every time you jump from one side to the next you should creep up higher and higher.

I love the x pass.. i only use it when i'm showing people how easy i really can just pass their guard. My favorite is grabbing their feet rolling them then catch them on the way back up. Otherwise i'm over under pass all the way.

Is he leaving his legs open to lower body submissions by using that type of guard retention/recovery in your opinion?
@shawnmurphy6670
@shawnmurphy6670 8 лет назад
I actually was when I didn't know any many footlocks. As I learn more leg submissions it is less dangerous but I still need to look out for toe holds. I just learned last week not to get estima locked when pushing off of someone's chest with the inside of my foot pointing down.
@theomen49
@theomen49 8 лет назад
Yeah It seemed to me like you may have opened yourself up a few times. The grappling gods didn't give you rubber ankles along with the hips?
@shawnmurphy6670
@shawnmurphy6670 8 лет назад
Pretty bendy but I'd rather not test it. Better to just learn to avoid it. If I do get caught a tentacle usually comes in to peel off a hand but an isolated foot is an isolated foot and it'll snap like anyone's.
@jiujitsustudent604
@jiujitsustudent604 2 года назад
Seems like a bad long term strategy for guard retention. Eventually, those legs won’t move as well, and you’ll have to fall back on good technique. At that point, you’ll probably struggle because you relied too much on a physical attribute.
