In this video I go over various head control concepts. Head control is a major method of control, we often hear that when you control the head you can control the entire body. In this video I go over when and how to control the head from the bottom and top position by narrating a live roll.
This video is meant for student with at least 6 months of experience and is targeted towards those who understand the basics of both guillotine and darce.
These techniques are what I like to refer to as Universal Jiu-Jitsu, they’re effective in both gi and no gi and even more importantly they have many times proven to be effective in Mma.

Hey Firas, maybe this would be a better question for a future Q&A, but is there a reason why you think we aren't seeing as much of this in sub-only grappling events like EBI? Head control, kimura grips, and leg entanglements are so good in sub-only, and can provide lots of value over the traditional pass/sweep meta game, but it seems that specially over the past 2 years, more people are focusing on the legs over head control. Could it be that in sub-only there is less incentive to turn in when threatened with a pass, and so it's harder to get onto the head without literally diving on it? Thanks!

I like to get a chin strap with the neck arm when setting up the arm in guillotine. When they pull half guard, I follow them into half making sure my hips are opposite the trapped arm. From there i place my head on the mat and sprawl and i can finish it like a Japanese neck tie. (it is basically a JNT will a guillotine/ chinstrap grip.)
@matthewlaplant8919
@matthewlaplant8919 6 лет назад
Thanks coach! Trapping the hip is much tighter. Plus most expect you to go for the leg and they “curly shuffle” away from you. Their hip is easier to get to and they don’t expect it

I started BJJ 2 month ago, and i am really putting the effort in it, i do not miss a single session, i drill at home, eat smart and watch tutorials every minute of my free time. But these simple things like "if you can see the top of his head , go for the Guillotine" are just golden!!! Its stuff that you can recall very fast while rolling and just implement to your game. Thank you very much for the great content Mr. Zahabi !!!

Firas you've got to be one of the best yet most underrated coaches in MMA today. I know you're too smart to be egotistical about praise you receive but it amazes me to see a coach who dominates at the highest levels of MMA like this without any major outside help or endorsement to start of your career from the big names. You and GSP conquered the World by hard work and intelligence. Bispings about as tough as they come yet Team GSP made it happen. I wish you all a great victory against Whitaker also. It would be great to see a Zahabi post 217 card analysis but don't do it if you think it will hurt your gyms future startegy or be very vague on GSPs moves and dissect Bisping and where he went wrong instead. I respect Bisping because he came up from across the Ocean and sleeping in a Car to be World champion and is a ferocious, high cardio, ruthless brawler. GSP is awesome for working so hard and consistently to evolve into the monster he is today. I want to see GSP beat Whitakers ass (because they're making him fight Whitaker) and then do whatever he deems best next. I think I'd like to see him down at 170 again after Whitaker and to take Woodleys belt from him and bring it back to Montreal. Once again-I salute you, GSP, and all your team your coaching and team awed and inspired me Saturday at 217. I hope GSP makes an example out of Whitaker like he did Bisping. All the best.

@WhtMike2006
@WhtMike2006 6 лет назад
If you like that combo, also try out the Japanese necktie but with an arm-in guillotine grip instead of the gable grip. Bill Cooper showed this at a seminar and I've found it really successful. Just wrap an arm-in guillotine grip from top half guard or a knee slice, fall over them with your torso on the back of their head, and apply pressure like a typical Japanese necktie. It's very powerful.

The darce is my best technique, and I prefer the hip trap as well. I like to finish a lot from the two positions in this roll, as well as finishing with my lock 'in the air' (so right arm choking would be on my right hip) and one reason on all of these finishes (mount, lock down, or lock up) that I like the hip is because if they do manage to create some space you're still trapping their legs. If you only trap their legs and they create some space, then you've got nothing. You may be okay and get the finish anyways, but I vastly prefer having as much lower body control as possible. The days of finishing good training partners with darces or guillotines without hip control are pretty much over.

Excellent video. Love the rolling commentary format. One question: With your d'arce, are you aiming for a blood choke, neck crank or slicing the soft tissue of the side of the neck (kind of like robert drysdale teaches it)? I'm just trying to figure out what I should be aiming for when I practice it.
@EssenceOfTrance
@EssenceOfTrance 6 лет назад
I used to always tap people by slicing the side of the neck. I made it a point to go for a blood choke and I felt that mounting/trapping the hip, not squeezing but just adding pressure through my bodyweight is the way to go. No pain, but people feel the pressure. This way is a great blood choke.

Thank you for sharing coach Zahabi. Do you find if you use more your legs to keep the distance would be one option to avoid the guillotine? Or when he is coming up on the single leg would it be harder for you to get the hold if he keeps the head on the outside (example. outside of your leg)? Best regards!

I get a really, really clean darce when I lock it up standard and then front roll over the guy. Of course it only works from the side control, but it makes it super clean and really tight. Most guys tap half way though the roll. The ones that hold on tap when I wind up on the other side with my lock on the top.

This is my preferred finish as well. Bill Cooper calls it the Sonic the hedgehog roll. This is what you're talking about, right? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1toGnOj8cog.html#t=35s

What are your thoughts on the arm in Guillotine? Do you feel it’s a high percentage finish? I always catch this grip on guys coming up from side control and have a finish rate of about 10%. My instructor says to regroup to the no-arm Guillotine. But I have a tough time against stronger opponents because I feel I’m gonna lose position during the switch. Can you do a video on the arm in Guillotine or the switch to no-arm Guillotine?

Can you comment on m Garcia being so successful with guillotines but rarely using darces
@WhtMike2006
@WhtMike2006 6 лет назад
FWIW Marcelo actually uses a lot of short arm darces in his gym (the grip Firas uses at 7:13) Marcelo likes to say that he'd rather have both of his arms against the opponent's neck and not their neck and their shoulder, but he also has short arms for his weight, and he has a great solution for his body type. He's softened his stance on arm triangles like the darce over the years, and he does use them more in training than he used to.
