BB and Albert mourned Stevie's death. Not only because he was a great human being, but also because he gave props to every single one of the elder bluesmen. To understand Stevie's importance to blues you have to understand that blues was dead in mainstream music when Stevie came to the forefront. The airwaves were ruled by hair bands and synthesizers. The elder bluesmen were just an afterthought to the general public. Up steps SRV and that all changed. He brought his elder statesmen heroes out of the bars and dives and had them playing stadiums, releasing new CDs, and getting the props they deserved. Each one of them loved Stevie for it, but they loved him more for his kind and humble soul. True story.
Growin up down south in east Texas and Louisiana, a lit of us never lost our love for the blues, nor the elders of the blues. As long as we don't forget, they'll live forever.
Competition? Yeah, like would you rather have Warren Buffett or Bill Gates walk up to you and lay a billion dollars cash on you? Two of the all time great guitarists here, so I'll just sit back and soak it in. There are many "great" guitarists, but Hendrix, Vaughn, King and King are in the stratosphere, needing to prove nothing. Each of them became part of their instruments, far beyond "playing" them. The only thing I can equate it to is the best horsemen, who become as one with their mount. In perfect rhythm with their steed you'll never see the shadow of daylight between the saddle and rider, as if molded from a single piece, regardless the gait.Something almost all of us can see, and relate to but have zero chance of attaining. (no matter how hard we try and wish)
As Eric Clapton put it: "Well, there's all the great guitarist," he said, holding his hands apart in front of him. And then, he raised his left hand up above his head. "And then there's Stevie."
This is straight up Nasty Blues! Stevie loved to play with the Greats: BB King, Albert Collins, Albert King, Buddy Guy et.al. Just look at the smiles Stevie has all throughout the song. This is just COOL!
I can't imagine how Stevie felt after this performance ... not only did he get to play with two legends that greatly influences his own playing and paved the way for his career, but they played HIS song. That had to be a feeling like no other.

This was the prodigal son of ALL Bluesmen, what you hear and see in SRV is a collective tribute to all those before and around him. He was the sole reason Blues made a come back, job well done BB King , Jimi , Albert and everyone else whom help shape and tune this phenomenon.
Though they knew he could...Stevie always looked happiest when he could jam with those guys: BB, Albert King, Albert Collins, Buddy Guy, Clapton et.al...I don't think Stevie ever thought of playing with his Idols as a competition...He just loved playin' with 'em!
Stevie allways respected the greats and was pretty careful not to blow them out of the water, if ya know Stevie you can see him holding back... BB king said he was the whitest black blues player he ever saw, and the best guitarest.
Albert Collins the master of the telecaster is the other man onstage you should check out some of his work. But Stevie is still the man! So much emotion in his playing.you should also check out Johnny and Edgar winter for some blistering blues.
The Master of the Telecaster, Albert Collins. Met him at the Bayou in DC back in the eighties. Great player. No picks, straight finger picker. His moment at Live Aid when George Thorogood brought him out to do Madison Blues was one of the highlights of the day. Used to drive his own RV because he liked the open road. RIP Albert Collins.
The amount of talent and mutual respect on that stage is amazing. Rip Stevie. RIP Riley. Nothing goes together like a Gibson and a Fender played by masters.
Saw BB play twice. Great shows both times!!! His shows rock with rhythm a lot more than you might imagine from clips posted. First time he had a full, killer horn section! Had the pleasure after the second time of meeting him, shaking his hand n chatting some.
Albert "Iceman" Collins appeared with SRV, and his older brother Jimmy Lee, at the 1989 Innaugeration concert, 26 minutes of heaven. Blues music is just loaded with great guitarists that most people never heard of. Check Robert Johnson, for the start of it all. Excuse my spelling.
B.B King loved Stevie. He said the natural way he could story tell for hours on that guitar was unlike anything he ever saw. The love and respect was mutual. ❤
I was raised on old school hip hop and west coast rap in the early 90's (born in 86). Always had a hard time sleeping, was up (we didn't have cable TV) and had PBS on. This was on and I remember watching the entire thing with my mouth open. The only other time thats happened in my life is the first time I heard "Time" by Pink Floyd while in the car with my dad. I turned to him with my mind completely blown and asked him "so... People can make music like this?"

Justin, the other man you asked about is actually a guitar Legend ALBERT COLLINS, You should check him out. He came up with his own unique playing style that made him stand out. Very talented man, unfortunately he died at only 61. He did several shows with BB King and other Greats. He's worth listening to for sure!!!! They called him the Master of the Telecaster guitar, he was GREAT
Stevie with two of his biggest idols. As a youngster they were who Stevie was listening to. Just hoping to get to meet them one day. But he did better than that. And every blues player he put on a huge pedestal in every interview and he knew who all paved that incredible road for so many incredible artist.
You found Albert Collins my man! There have been very few times when that much guitar talent was on one stage. Have you ever checked out "Cream"? Eric Clapton is one of the few that could have stood on that stage with them. I'd suggest, "Sunshine of Your Love" and "White Room".
Elvin Bishop is another great blues guitarist. From Oklahoma but learned to play from the greats in the ghetto of Chicago. Stevie's brother Jimmie is as good. Honey you need to look up all the blues greats. The playing is phenomenal!! The voices soul gripping!!

This is a great video to show a young guitarist to show how professionals trade licks. All three of them are amazing - I can’t choose who I like better in this. They all layin’ it down. I love that they each are a master of their guitars. A telecaster, a stratocaster, and a ES-335 hollowbody frolicking in a field of audible flowers.

Double Trouble played with Jonny Lang after Stevie’s passing. You should check out Jonny’s first album “ Lie to me” he remade a bunch of old Motown songs into his blues style, my fav is Matchbox” originally done by Ike Turner and the Kings
Grandmother BOUNCE yep, you grew up in the same church I did. I attended a Pentecostal Church and yes, the guitarist slayed the guitar but of course but these men are incredible. 🙇🏻♀️🔍☝🏽🔥🌏👏🏽 I certainly regret not “passing up some out of town work” so I missed these incredible Legends playing at my Tribal Entertainment Facility. I also regret not seeing Mr. Ray Charles! 😯😤😢
Albert King, who introduced him into the blues fest in Chicago. Both BB, Albert, and Eric Clapton consider SRV the best they've ever seen. But all on that stage are very humble when it comes to their skills.
There's a new kid on the block, his name is Justin Johnson ! He has nearly a half million followers on you tube. Why there's not more I don't know. Anyway this kid can play it all, from delta to some serious country to, well you name it he takes on all genres and puts his own taste to it. He had a wash tub ( small ) turned into a guitar that sounds perfect for old delta. And slide, well you'd have to hear it. Makes and sells a three string electric shovel, no frets. In his hands three strings sounds better than a lot of people on six. Can't say enough about this kid, I call him a kid because my youngest son at 39 is three years older than him. Check the boy out he plays Django and plays classical with his own twist to it.
I love how bb king could bounce in an out of the major and minor scales,or the happy and sad sounds as they r often called. But on Srv left if another king of the blues, Albert Collins check him out to if u haven’t already
Stevie idiolized those two guys, BB King and Albert Colllins. That is why he started playing the blues. It was probably a great joy for him to be on stage with those two greats.
