G'day guys, today we are reacting to Stevie Ray Vaughan Voodoo Child a cover of the Jimi Hendrix song. I think SRV gave him a run for his money. It's some kind of Voodoo Magic.

To play Hendrix and get close takes a damn good guitarist. To play Hendrix right takes a genius. To take Hendrix to the next level and mess with it takes Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Frank Tripodi - Let's get real here. Hendrix was black, and because of the uniqueness of a black man playing a rock guitar, he got the hype. If you are honest with yourself and really evaluate Hendrix based on his guitar play and not the color of his skin, you will realize he was a "good" guitar player, not "great". And nobody wants to be the guy that comes across as racist by making that statement. But I'll do it, Hendrix was just good, and if you are wondering, I am Mexican. SRV was the greatest of all time and could play circles around Hendrix.

Hendrix was the original blues/rock innovator with soul and feel. SRV perfected blues/rock with soul and feel but added technical perfection. I took guitar lessons as a teenager and didn’t have the talent so I gave it up. SRV is the most naturally gifted guitarist there ever was in my opinion. I compare him to Michael Jordan. Natural talent and work ethic like no other. That’s how a G.O.A.T. comes to be!

Thank you for covering SRV. Living in Austin, Texas I had the opportunity to see Stevie several times back in the day (RIP, Stevie). This show was recorded at Austin City Limits, the longest running music show in the history of television. I worked in the concert business for 23 years, and had the opportunity to meet Stevie backstage at Prince's Purple Rain Tour in 1985. I mention it to say that Stevie was so gracious and appreciative of the recognition given to him. Again, thank you for your great reaction!!!

I got “Electric Ladyland” by Jimi Hendrix when I was 14 & was blown away. SRV was part of the Austin live music scene in the 70s & 80s, where he & his brother Jimmy (of The Fabulous Thunderbirds) would frequently play at Antoine’s. I love & respect Jimi (SRV’s idol), but Stevie Ray was practically a homeboy for me.

Stevie's version of VooDoo Chile was uptempo from Jimi's performance of it which heightens the intensity. Stevie always said that people shouldn't be afraid to play Hendrixes music -- it needed to still be performed live to keep the music and Jimi's genius alive. BTW, Stevie carried a polaroid picture of Hendrix in his wallet for years. Stevie wore out a pressing of Electric Ladyland playing it over and over to memorize the guitar work.

I think it's only fair to make some distinctions when comparing Jimi to anybody. 1) Jimi was an incredibly humble and soft spoken man. You can see it in his many interviews. Many interviewers (and fans) at the time were calling him the greatest guitarist of all time. Every time Jimi was told this in interviews (as a compliment), he denied that he was, really didn't like the comparisons, and always gave credit to the many great guitarists out there. 2) SRV was another great guitarist. He was an incredible technician on the guitar as we can see from this video. Jimi's guitar playing wasn't as technical, because the beauty of Jimi's playing was it's rawness and his creativity. Jimi was RAW. 3) SRV's version of Voodoo Chile (slight return) was sped up which played into his incredible technical ability. Jimi's original of Voodoo Chile (slight return) was slower and raw. 5) Older and newer fans don't fall into the "who is a better guitarist" comparison. I think both Jimi and Stevie wouldn't appreciate it. But wouldn't it have been great if we could have seen them perform Voodoo Chile (slight return), on stage, together! Love 'em both.

ptofview Good point or two, However, it is naive to try naming “greatest.” Too many genres, and metrics to consider, etc. Terry Kath (Chicago Transit ‘69 at Fillmore) could certainly hang with anyone, and JH viewed Kath as actually better than he. If one includes other genres, Danny Gatton would humble Hendrix, as would Atkins, Joe Pass, Jerry Reed, Tommy Emmanuel, many others. And Jason Becker...So this worship of Hendrix is foolish and based largely on his showmanship, use of effects, and the era he played.

Enjoyed the reaction video brother . You hit it on the head . I'm a musician who also don't read music . It comes from your soul . It is a feeling . It's the best feeling in the world . It's likened to the way you feel when you hear a good song like this one , and you can almost feel the same emotion that the artist is feeling while performing it ...

Stevie stayed true to the bones of the song; he just put the SRV touch on it!

Just found this video and had to comment I was at Alpine Valley the night SRV died. Drove from the concert in East Troy to Waukesha. Very foggy night. Heard the next morning at work that Stevie's helicopter had crashed into the ski slope. I went into my office and bawled my eyes out. To this day, i find it hard to see him so alive in these videos. Plus now we've lost Jeff Healy also. And the guitars gently weep.

Not long after Stevie died I read an article that stated, 'If Jimi is king, then Stevie Ray is the only true heir to the throne'.

Great reaction man, you're quickly becoming my favourite reactor. I would love for you to check out The Jeff Healey Band "See the Light". Jeff was a great Canadian guitarist who was blind and played sitting down with the guitar flat on his lap. SRV was a big fan of Jeff, there's a great video of them playing Stevie's "Look at Little Sister", unfortunately cancer took him in 2008. subbed.

Stevie Ray made this his own, I love the original but his version I think is better. We lost a huge talent when he died. The world was denied so much more brilliance from him. R.I.P
@theonlybenjohnson
@theonlybenjohnson 5 лет назад
@John Nicodemus You misunderstood him. "Making it your own" doesnt mean what you interpreted it as. Ive been in music all my life and that phrase comes up a lot. It just means confidently putting your own spin on it but preserving the foundational integrity of the song. Neither are better, they are two different flavors of the same food, Jimi came up with the recipe. Stevie just made that his own (version) with that performance 👍

SENSATIONAL..a legend in his own MAkING..Stevie Ray Vaughan handles that guitar like holding a spoon and feeding hisself..Doesnt need a bib so no cleanup..singing is fabulous..No one can come close to overtopping Stevie on that guitar..Stevie is so missed, and wont be forgotten

Stevie was an incredible technician. Second to none. JImi was raw. So inventive on the guitar with his visionary creativity. Stevie's music was blues/rock. Jimi was a blues/rock/psychedelic talent. Listen to Jimi's Electric Ladyland double album set (Crosstown Traffic, Voodoo Chile and Voodoo Child slight return, Burning of the Midnight Lamp, Rainy Day Dream Away, Gypsy Eyes, House Burnin' Down, Come On Part 1, All Along the Watchtower). NO ONE has EVER made music like that. Never will. Stevie and Jimi wouldn't care for comparisons. They are different and unique in their own way. Enjoy them both!

Love your enthusiasm. Keep up the great work! This is one of my all time favourite clips of SRV. It's as if he's actually taming a wild guitar. Never fails to give me chills. Pump the volume right up and it's a great way to clean out your speakers.

Stevie also never had a set list for any live performances as well as not being able to read music. I feel it was because of his very early age of drug addiction. Quitting HS to move to Austin, Music Capital Of America, which is the largest music festival & it just went on this past weekend. Hundreds of bands play 24/7 during it & hundreds of thousands of fans attend it each year. He lived an extremely hard life way before getting that first record deal. And he finally beat addiction and died not that long after being sober. A very special person who as most of us Texans are very humble in how most grew up with very few things. I grew up on a small dairy farm in East Tx. The youngest of 4 boys and we all started running the dairy at a very young age as our Dad always had another job to be at. But I wouldn’t trade the hardships & work ethic for anything. You learn to make it and survive in life when your truly given very little in life. But my Mom made sure we were well fed from a huge garden and a beef steer butchered each yr along with pigs & chickens we raised & ate frequently. She made sure we had ironed shirts & jeans for school. The story of my Dad & Mom’s raising & what all they dealt with & went threw during Ww2 is incredible to go threw and persevere. The same was said for SRV. it’s just how things were in the 50’s & 60’s for him and us at those times. I bought myself from earned money my first drum kit when I was 5 for $15. The jobs I did for other people in our tiny community was long to earn money to purchase the things we wanted but our parents couldn’t or wouldn’t buy us growing up. They had it way harder than my brothers & I. So that cycle of life pretty much carried over to us. Went threw school and played all of Only 3 sports our tiny school offered to some what not have to work as much on the farm if practicing or playing a game. But we actually loved playing as much as getting out of some work. Either way we were & stayed very busy all year long as the summers were really worse than the school yrs. We had to milk for other dairymen when we had our 16th birthday to buy our first car. And milk for others in high school to afford gas & other things. I made $28 bucks a week & I drove a lot of miles each week & bought other things as well off of $28. I moved out at 16 as well & completed HS & I worked 3 part time jobs to pay for an apartment & bills with my best friend. Getting very little sleep & going 100 mph everyday. And I loved every minute of it as it carried over when my wife & I married at 21.just had our 38th. We have 3 grown & married kids & 10 grandchildren so far. Our youngest & his wife have a 2 yr old son. The first to carry on our last name. As our 2 others are women. The oldest has 5. 4 she delivered & 1 is adopted from Ethiopia. And our younger daughter & husband have 4 boys like me & my 3 brothers my brother Chuck who was 3 yrs older than me passed away about 4 yrs ago. Sorry to go on but family heritage & how things were then growing up made us in who we are and most are survivors. I know Stevie Ray was one as well.

My favorite guitarist ever was & will always be SRV !!! Little Wing, Couldn't Stand The Weather, Pride And Joy, Crossfire, Look At Little Sister, Mary Had A Little Lamb, Dirty Pool, Tightrope, & The Sky Is Crying are all 25's on a 10 scale & Give Me Back My Wig & Come On Pt. 3 will always make you smile, but Riviera Paradise is hands down his smoothest song & my personal favorite (I put it on repeat when I sleep, it's almost a religious experience)! They recorded it in one take with only one light on low in the room, & the engineer was worried they were going to run out of tape. When SRV ended the song, the tape ran out & stopped; pure magic !!!

His E string I've been told what's 13 gauge and he still broke it from time to time most guitarists would never be able to play his guitars that's where he got his sound was fighting his guitar strings through a song there's a version of of life without you where he stops about halfway through and talk to the audience it shows his left hand perfectly and he had what look like quarter inch black calluses all over his fingers

Jimi first thought of it but Stevie went beyond it, also please consider Jeff Healy and his song confidence man (who was blind) and played his guitar sitting down and laying it flat across his lap watch live performances first very amazing. I have never commented on any channel on RU-vid before but your reaction is very honest I've watched that video of Stevie several times and even watch the original performance on Austin city limits on PBS back in the 1980's and my reaction is exactly the same way as yours all these years later good luck with your Channel
