Hendrix - like most of the '60s and early '70s performances were castrated by crappy sound-systems, mixboards, etc. I've thought SRV's tributes to Hendrix were his way of attempting to rectify the loss of future generations to that outstanding music.

@@davidpeters44 Yup, he proved it perfectly. Tommy Shannon's bass line is a huge part of the overall sound and Chris Laytons drumming is always on point and another big part of the overall sound. Once he added Reese Wynans to work the keys, that was the icing on the cake. Super tight band and all of them just as soulful as Stevie.

SRV is my favorite performer of all time, in his very short life he impacted the music industry so much that it's still feel today. I read and seen some of the best guitar players say that they dream of the day they can play at half his skill. He continues to influence people even today in many ways including to get sober and it's TRUE that you can say sober! His man was even afraid after he got sober that he wouldn't be able to play at the level that he did before. My self think he was just as good that last song he play with so many of his friends as the early years. I will alway love his music, today people write and sing hoping to for a #1 hit! He just played and open up his heart and hoped he was loved! He lived breathed every thing about his music and it shows in ever more. Ur right he could feel it all the way to his soul because it was his soul he was allowing us to hear thru the strange of that so famous guitar!!!! God bless SRV and thanks for allowing us what very little time we had with him. cherish every moment because you're not promised the next second!!!!!

There are many amazing guitarists. There are guys who were/are really technical and fast. There are guys with great feel and soul. In my opinion SRV was the most well rounded guitarist with soul, speed, vibrato and technical perfection all in one. Just watch how he rarely ever looks at his guitar and never misses a note. I compare him to Michael Jordan because he was born with a gift, loved his craft and worked harder than anyone else. That’s what made them both the G.O.A.T.!!!

Stevie was a true Texas gentleman as well. I went to an album signing at a music store in Dallas in the mid 80's. There were so many people there that Stevie didn't have time to sign for everyone as his manager was telling him to leave. Stevie said that he at least wanted to shake every person's had that has come out. And that's what he did. So, I never got an autograph but I did shake his hand. He had HUGE hands, like baseball mitts, lol.

Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan are the only two guitarists that I've experienced in my life that you actually feel like their soul is speaking to you through their guitar playing. The way they played guitar was so beautiful to watch because you really feel like they are speaking their absolute truth to you. You can't fake that, I think that's why you can connect so deeply with it. It's also exhausting in some ways because they pour so much of themselves into their playing. That's why I think Stevie sweat so much, there's so much emotion and soul being channeled into his playing. This is what music is all about.

Great guitar players often take their music and style somewhere nobody else has gone. Originality has the sound of magic and if you enjoy what the performer is doing, they can take you somewhere you’ve never been. Was Stevie the best? Good question but I don’t think there is a technically correct answer. He was awe inspiring, entertaining to watch, and certainly great. If you listen to a lot of Hendrix, you can hear where some of his inspiration came from and the rest is just him. “The rest” is what makes him great, Jimi laid the ground work, Stevie took it further.

I graduate college w/ an older lady at the time that remembered a teenager living on her couch in Austin who played for different bands that needed a guitarist. I was typing a comment his ability to fly around that guitar. Then you touched on it.That talent only comes from decades of constant dedication. I have friends(No where as talented) but have had the same life long passion for guitar. Its really is a connection with the guitar, 90% of the greatest guitarist i have even seen live, all perform with a guitar that is older. Becuase of its tone, feel, or what ever it is. They respect it and guitarists look at their guitar collection as almost a member of the band due to how much of a role it plays in the music. He had many guitars but his SRV insignia guitar is probably his most iconic. It also helped that he had giant strong hands. Dacades ago my father(not a small man in any respect) ran into SRV and he said "it was the first time I remember the physical hand shake" he said he felt like a child shaking a grown mans hand. It doesn't make you a better guitarist, but having good tools always makes creating easier. A sharp chisel cuts better, his hands allowed him to easier perform the maneuvers he envisioned.

Please don't attempt to imply Mayer is in the caliber of players like Hendrix and SRV. He isn't and never will be. Mayer inducted SRV because he is a famous super fan who would wax rhapsodic about SRV's greatness and influence on him. Period. But - don't conflate that with Mayer being anywhere near those 2 GOATS. He ain't.

Your pretty funny Justin. Thank you for reacting to Stevie. He's in a class of his own. Check out Mary Had a little lamb by Stevie. Very funky, bluesy of course.

"Music is about the space between the notes." Claude Debussy. SRV lived in this realm. He took us there in ways we could not achieve on our own. The Master.

Click on any SRV video and be amazed...have to watch him live to really enjoy. VooDoo Child, Texas Flood (has some surprises for you)...all good because he was the best. Lost his at the age of 35 in a helicopter crash. Little Wing and VooDoo Child were Hendrix songs but, I like SRV versions better. Stevie’s hands were so strong, he had to use 12 gauge strings, with his estring being 13 gauge because he broke them too easy. Jimmie Vaughn his big brother was an inspiration to him growing up.

SRV was a true master of his craft. He'd sweat even after he was clean, not as bad do to better stages/venues. That's a hot club and close stage lights are like sun damn lamps plus you're right, nyone would sweat through that Herculean effort. He has a good size library of work even though he died young. Check it out.

In 1989, SRV and B.B. King toured together. I wanted to go see them, but didn't follow through. A short time later, Stevie was gone. I've always regretted I didn't go. Now B.B.'s gone too. So sad. What a concert that would have been.

SRV is the GOAT, there are alot of great guitarist out there but nobody plays with the feel that he does. They can all shred but it's all technical there is no soul in their playing. There are some exceptions but nobody does it as well ad SRV. Besides Stevie my second pick would be David Gilmore of Pink Floyd. Totally diffrent music but just as soulful. Check out Pink Floyd Comfortably Numb Live at Pluse. It's at the top of the list as far as solos go.

I openly wept when I heard he'd passed. It took a long, long time before I listened to music again but I eventually found a singer who affected me the way his playing did, one who brought me joy. Her name was Amy. I'll listen to some Steely Dan and/or Donald Fagan sometimes or play "Mary Had a Little Lamb" on my guitar but the thrill is gone (!) and I don't really even want it back. Nothing can compete with what I can replay in my mind. Seeing his effect on you as you listened made us brothers, Justin. I'd never seen you before and may never see you again but I don't feel as alone now. Peace.

@@killereverb3928, I am talking music theory, speed techniques (alternative picking, twitch picking, economy picking, hybrid picking, sweep picking), arpeggios, and such. 75% of guitarists today will smoke SRV in ALL of those... they just don't have the stage presence.
@killereverb3928
@killereverb3928 5 лет назад
@@johndeeregreen4592 - I knew that's what you were getting at when I made my comment. You missed "harmony" in your proud iteration of "theory and picking techniques." LOL The fact that nobody does SRV like he did and countless thousands around the world use the techniques youre referring to illustrates my point. Nobody smokes SRV fool. Nobody. None of the people you are referring to could play like SRV ever! I wonder why? You think the missing factor is stage presence? Grow up. You clearly don't know what youre talking about.

Stevie's wife said he used to wake her up at night playing guitar in his sleep.. You should take a look at Johnny Winter as well, like a live 1970's video of "be careful with a fool" or "Mama talk to your daughter"..
