What If histories stir the imagination, leaving people wondering how their lives could have been different if alternative decisions had been made. History and sports fans alike will find the What If of the major leagues being integrated long before Jackie Robinson a fascinating option to consider. And, how would twenty-one stars of the black ball era (Negro Leagues and independent black teams) like to be honored? Bob May discusses his acclaimed book, The Best Season, the First Ninety Games. Special appearance by Dr. William Blair Jr., Pitcher from the Cincinnati Crescents and Indianapolis Clowns

Great historical overview of some prominent Negro Leaguers. While Bill James research is consistent and reputable, even he admits that providing ratings for many Negro League players was a challenge due to the paucity of statistics available for them. Much of the rating placement for Negro League players is attributed to the recollections of those who saw them play and provided their opinions.

“paucity” - the presence of something in only small or limited quantities. Nice.

At one game in 1938, the opposing team, the Dallas Darkskins, let loose a white Persian cat while Oberg was at bat. Oberg was going to brain the foul feline with his bat, but he restrained himself, and drew his usual walk.

Did you know that in 1937, Harold Oberg, (SS) of Cadiz, Ohio was the first White player to break the color barrier in the Negro League, for the Shreveport Shines? He could never lose his temper or ever say the N-word. He even had to eat his chicken behind the Black diners and always had to ride in the back of the team bus. What a courageous young man, to say the least! Satchel Page said that "Harold the Ghost," was the whitest White man he has ever faced as Oberg was suspected to be an Albino, as he had pink eyes and blonde-white hair. Ol' "Pink-Eye," as he was sometimes referred to, but he had sharp eyes and led the Negro Leagues in walks for nine of his 11 years in Shreveport. (To be continued.) :)

The only reason they invited black players because they saw how much coverage black baseball and football leagues were getting. They were gaining on them and they knew that it would be a multi trillion dollar business if they didn't cash in on a lot of these black players black players with charisma style and what we call the okie doke showmanship that's what fans are looking for and black athletes possess that and that's what they wanted to see. We don't even have to mention her athleticism. If black athletes decided to break away and start their own League they could bankrupt these other leagues I promise you. They wouldn't have to worry about people treating them bad because of the color of their skin. The only time they have to worry about that is when we had to play against opposing teams who were known to be racist.
