Hey everyone, Lonny from The Reid Farm here to share a little of what we do here on the farm, this is our daily life, you just never know what opportunity may land in our lap on any given day. So check out our videos and follow along on our journey toward complete self sufficiency.
The Reid Farm is located in Deland Florida, 5 minutes off of I-4 @ exit 114, situated between Orlando and Daytona Beach. We are a licensed nursery, specializing in edible and medicinal plants and fruit trees, as well as food forest and garden installations.
We are open to the public every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10 am-4 pm. Come browse our nursery and take another step toward self sustainability!

Cool. In south Florida, my stuff is getting smashed by the heat. Outside of sweet potatoes, peanuts, and golden berries, everything else is stunted or dying. Lima beans don't die, but the flowers aren't taking. Any leafy greens you advise growing in this heat.

Have you tried growing black eyed peas? They are easy growers like peanuts. As far as greens, the tropical spinaches (Okinawan, Longevity, Suriname and Sissoo) thrive in the summer heat, as do the tropical hibiscuses (acetosella, calyphyllus, radiatus and cannabinus) and the salad trees (abelmoschus manihot). June plum and hog plum both produce fruit and have delicious, edible leaves and grow very well in South Florida.

@@thereidfarm1 Currently, have black eyed peas growing and they are doing good. Had never tried them before, but I think they are showing an advantage over limas.

These seed came from walmart, I frequently use baker creek, Mary's, Johnny's, kitazawa and urban farmer.

Hi Lonny, Thanks for sharing. How do you process the beans? Do you open the pods by hand use a machine? Do you dry them first? I am growing my own food off-grid in Panama and although I am able to grow a variety of tropical beans, I have found the time spent harvesting and shucking is not worth it. Especially since our constant moisture means the beans never dry on the plant (they either sprout in the pod on the plant or are killed by fungus) so I am picking them when they are as large as possible but still wet.

We picked on a dry day, laid them out on a table inside with a fan on them. My dad is the current hand bean sheller but we will get a machine shortly.
