Remaking the flower bed where there were 3 big patches of Black Eyed Susan. One patch was replaced by a Bloom-A-Thon Azalea. The second patch was replaced by Tor Gold Spirea. Did not record any of the earlier removal hence recording this one. This is just a remove, divide and transplant. I am not replacing this patch with anything. The Azalea and Spirea will take up all the space left by this removal. Now in my yard, I have small clumps of Black Eyed Susan planted all over. Will see if they will bloom in shaded spots or not. They do need full sun to thrive.

Black Eyed Susan Goldstrum Rudbeckia is a perennial that dies back every year in our weather. The top portion is always less than a year old. The root portion of what I've shown in the video is about 2 years old. Age does not matter much - they look the same regardless. I know there is a vine version that is 6 to 8 feet long in one year. I have never grown that but would imagine it to be climbing and softer stem. The one I have is always about 24" tall & wide max. I cut them close to ground every winter. They die back even if not cut. They start new every spring. Good luck in sorting that out. Hope the below videos would help: How they look in August - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sUL9WyD0BaY.html Cut back in October - ru-vid.comnm7PpY6mZIg

Do you ever use the seedlings from the Goldstrum? Do you find the seedlings are different from the mother plant? Thanks

No I have not since I do not feel the need to. They propagate themselves and divide so easy. But I know it must be a different kind of experience raising from seed. Takes a bit of patience and I often fail because I keep forgetting ti keep the seeds moist. I did, however, for other plants like Zinnia, Cilantro & some annuals. One of a Zinnia I raised from seed turned out to be unique. Two colors in half and half. I heard that division is a better way to keep true to the mother plant but I am no expert. Thank you 🙏🏻. Feel honored by your question 😊😊😊

Hi your video has been very helpful🙂. When removing the plants do I need to make sure all of the root is attached or is it ok for some of the roots to tear?

It is ok to cut some roots off. Just like pruning the top, pruning some roots is perfectly fine. Keep more if the plant is younger. Important to transplant on cooler days and keep them watered afterwards

When would it be to late to devide your black eyes?

I prefer to do it in Spring. But have done it early summer. As long as they get well watered, they would be fine. I am in zone 7 coastal Canada. Weather is usually mild. Seldom go above 25C during summer. I do my transplant, divide and new plantings on cloudy days. I would not divide close to bloom time. You can see the flower buds. Good luck!
