A tree getting lots of undeserved hate, black locust brings a lot to be liked to the table. Recent windstorm bent one of the many I cultivate along the fence on the neighbors' side and had to harvest it. So come along and see what great results you can get with minimal labor, no inputs and even in small spaces.

Black Locust is really hard dense wood. It is excellent to use for building in water, because it resists rotting. American settlers used it to build pilings and docks.

I'm so glad I found this video, this is exactly what I needed to know! Black locust grows really well on my land and I really wanted to put that to use. I think I'm going to use it to create shade for the chickens, coppice it for wood and supplement the donkey feed. Thank you!

Be careful with using it as feed for equines. It is toxic to equines. Most won't touch it, but it is really not good for them. My cattle and dairy goats especially love it, though. They are able to process the Robinin that these trees contain. (Hence the name Pseudoacacia Robinia.) Love this tree, tho!

I also agree it is one of the most useful trees a person can grow for permaculture. Sadly they didn't coppice them and most were used here as they were the most desired trees for all sorts of uses. They are a strong hardwood and have great resistance to rot as well as being great fireood. They are far better than the "regular" honey locust tree which is not related. This is very good advice, grow black locust!

Keep in mind that it can be invasive, though, so you'll want to keep it under control.

Goats eat everything :D but yes, black locust leaf and branch is good forage for pastured animals! It cannot be their primary diet tho as any sensible animal steward knows - grazers need widely varied forage.
