My eldest was twelve, my youngest nine, and I was bringing the two kids over the mountains for a summer visit. It was a long drive and I found myself explaining WHY Nazis were bad. As my eldest knew they were, but not why. At 12? Granted, I think I knew because I was already reading all kinds of things by that age and my eldest had yet to enter that phase. So that was a conversation we had there as I drove them from one side of the state to the other. But I’ve always known part of my job would be talking about stuff the schools wouldn’t. And I had no understanding of the extent of my own ignorance about some vital topics. The only thing I remember being taught about the Reconstruction era was “Carpetbaggers are bad.” Makes me want to swear just thinking about it. My kids have long since become adults and they’re both really good people. And that’s the most I can ask.

Most political ideologies that benefit the Bi-POC, API, Lantix, & LGBTQ communities are within the "left-leaning" spectrum, thus not inherent to a Political Party. This is why definitive ideologies that have benefitted various marginalized communities over the last few hundreds years have drifted back and fourth across the aisle, from Dem to Rep. So, yes, you can cherry-pick a moment in our 400 year history where Republicans were aligned with once-considered leftist legislation. I have to disagree with you somewhat. A lot of us did grow up with conservative, spiritual values, but I would not say we vote Dem for preservation of finances. A lot of us have our personal beliefs which tell us that we should not be making our beliefs a requirement for everyone else. A lot of us agree with the Dems on the other issues. Some of us also understand that someone's stance on 1 or 2 issues doesn't mean they're more holy than someone else in totality. I guess we could stretch Civil Rights, Hate Crimes, and a few other things into the "safety" category, but it's not that simple. And probably the last reason many of us still vote Dem is there is nothing on the other side that would make us switch. The Republicans are intent on always promoting the craziest members of their party, and they only promote black people in the party who 100% tow the party line like Tim Scott. We look at the Dems, and we see black officials disagreeing with or criticizing elements of the party all the time

The greatest athlete in the thirties was Jesse Owens and he proved it at the 1936 Berlin games. Then he came home and when he entered his hotel in NYC he was told he couldn’t take the elevators because they were white only. People always say stuff like this but where I'm from I did learn about Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Thurgood Marshall, Robert Morris, Booker T Washington, George Washington Carver annnnnnnd even saw parts of the underground railroad on a field trip. However I was taught that Eli Whitney, the inventor of the cotton gin was black, which he clearly is not. So I really don't understand why everyone think we aren't taught black history. I was, along with American history.

My history comes from my family as a 50 yr old black woman, because the extent of black history taught in school, where I'm from, only consisted of MLK, Malcolm X, the underground railroad, and a sprinkle of slavery. I am a descendant of slaves and my parents lived through seeing lynchings, lived through Jim Crow, marched for civil rights, and so on. My father picked cotton for 25 cent a pound, hid and slept in drain pipes if he couldn't get home before dark because the klan would hunt our people by night. We are not being sensitive, nor are we over exaggerating our treatment and complaints about the system. My suggestion is watch, and follow Dr. Rashad Richey, to really realize why we feel the way we do, because racism of my people is as real today as yesterday. Corporate media hides the fact that killing and brutalizing black people by police are more common occurrences than they report. Look up the facts of housing discrimination when it comes to home loans, business loans, discrimination in quality health care, inequality in salaries and hourly wages, inequality even within prison sentencing, then maybe you'll understand why we feel how we feel. Maybe then you'll figure out what "woke" really means, and not what the right, far right, maga, and republican officials (in all their mocking of the term) really means.
