If you have to eat it when it’s super super ripe, I wonder how long it stays in that super, super ripe stage? Like you know, an avocado is only perfect for 7 and a half minutes after midnight on the third full moon of the year.

I was excited to hear Emmy taste it because I knew she would actually be accurate.
@gwagner1380
@gwagner1380 5 лет назад
It doesn't but at the same time it does. The name comes more from the texture and colour rather than taste because by manufacturing standards, the taste of chocolate is way more different than the taste of the original components. As I said it doesn't taste like store-bought chocolate because as Emmy said, it is subtle and has a flavour of it's own but it does taste as "chocolate" if you have drunk a special beverage (one of many) done in the south of my country made with Cocoa Beans. It dates back to the era before the Spanish conquest where the Mayan and Olmec cultures existed and it taste nothing like stereotypical chocolate but it is theoretically speaking a form of ancient hot chocolate beverage. In my mouth it tastes just like that and I just love it, and if you dare to try it, add a little bit of Orange juice to the fruit and it'll taste even better.
@Mad-Lad-Chad
@Mad-Lad-Chad 4 года назад
GWagner13 if you don’t mind my asking what is that chocolate beverage you mentioned? I only ask because many years ago my teacher had a chocolate drink he said came from South Africa that tasted unlike anything I have ever tasted. I’ve recently been trying to figure out what it was so I could buy some to share with my family because they never got to taste it.
@mouhitorinoboku9655
@mouhitorinoboku9655 4 года назад
@@Mad-Lad-Chad my family occasionally mixes unsweetened cocoa powder with milk and chili, it's bitter and spicy but it's wonderful, we first tried it after I watched a documentary about the Aztecs I think it was? (could be wrong it was in middle school) but we really liked it, so we've made it several times. I wonder if maybe the drink their referring to is similar?

Great point about fruit not being right to eat. My father once got me persimmons as a kid because I was like what are persimmons? I took a bite and I don't think it was ripe because it was like eating cloth. It was dry and made my mouth all puckery. I never wanted to try it again. The next time I got persimmons as an adult I was scared to try them again and looked up recipes on persimmons and found one for Persimmon bread. I made it and that was the best idea I had ever had. It was great. Next time I tried the fruit on its own and I was like okay...I obviously had a bad experience the first time as a kid. But totally agree...don't give up on a fruit you don't like.
@amaturearcadia
@amaturearcadia 2 года назад
There's different types of persimmons. The one you tried is supposed to be cooked and or so ripe it's almost mush. There are others that you can eat like an apple, they're both so sweet. Give them another try :) cheers

Funny story: My mom adores this fruit. When I was a little girl, my mom bought a bunch of these and I refused with my life to eat them or actually go near them. My mom asked me why (she knew something was on. She knew I had some interesting ideas lmao). I told her I was scared of them because they were huge black toads. In Spanish, zapote (the name of the fruit) is a homophone of sapote (big toad) :p

Ashley Madison: That’s the whole idea; Emmy likes to learn and find out about foods that are new to her, and we get to learn right along with her. That’s why she describes every aspect of each new food/process/technique-so that we come as close as possible to experiencing each new one as possible, without our having to find out about, source, and ship those items all the way to us. :). What a super idea-especially for those of us who lives in the north!!!!

Zapote Negro! We would get this as 'pudding' in a bowl as dessert at my grandpas place, but thankfully it wasnt untill I was 16 that I actually saw what the fruit looks like, otherwise I would have never eaten it :P Whenever I had it you would scoop out the flesh and pass it through a wire sieve into a bowl so you would really get a pudding out of it. And at my grandpa's place they would mix some orange juice into it if i remember right :)

Omg thank you for making this vid. I read about this fruit like two years ago but haven’t been able to find much on it and I’ve been weirdly curious about it. Great vid, as always. I really like that you always include additional information in your vids.

My husband loves that double chocolate banana bread recipe. I don’t like chocolate that much so we have to fight over the over ripe bananas. I like my banana bread traditional, with black walnuts.

Yummm I never liked black sapote growing up but as I got older the memories had me craving it, and although the black sapote wasn't something I would recommend to everyone another type of sapote I do recommend you try is sapote Mamey. The flavor is amazing. I would eat so much growing up both plain and in milkshakes. It has a bunch of good vitamins.

Not a fan of mamey, I find the flavor to be quite strong and overpowering. Oddly enough, I find the fuyu persimmon to be a toned down/mild flavor of mamey and I love it!

Black sapote tastes a lot like mild Belgian milk chocolate pudding to me, the kind that used to come with a cream layer on top. It's by far one of my favorite indulgences, but it's $40 for 4 fruits so it's pretty expensive.

My mom used to give me Black Sapote when I was a toddler and lived in Mexico. We were so poor but things like this were everything. When we moved to the US we weren’t able to eat it anymore because they don’t sale it here and I as far as I know, and I didn’t know what it was called but I never forgot the look and flavor of it and I’ve been dying to eat one again. Now that I know the name I’m going to get some when I visit Mexico 🇲🇽 again. Thank you Emmy you don’t know what this mean to me! The memories of being so poor yet so happy when we ate these and my mom so nurturing 💕

Thank you for this video. I've been intrigued by this fruit for years and have only just managed to find a source (although it isn't yet in season). I very much appreciate your vocabulary and descriptive ability. Many food reviewers provide me little of substance to go on, but your description was the next best thing to a first hand experience.
