Time to make a delicious liqueur from immature black walnuts. It is called nocino! I need to start it now so it can be ready for Christmas.
**Remember that with wild edibles to be 100% sure of what you foraged before you eat it. When in doubt, throw it out**

If you turn the halved nuts onto the flat side, your quartering cut will be safer. Thanks for the very informative video!

I’m originally from Stockton, Missouri, USA. This town has less than 3,000 people living there. The town festival is called the Black Walnut Festival & is celebrated he 1st weekend in September (when the nuts are ready for harvesting). The festival begins Thursday afternoon & ends Sunday afternoon. There are booths for local clubs & vendors, contests, & even a carnival. Saturday they have a parade. There is a competition at all the local rural schools to determine the Black Walnut Festival Queen for the year. The reason for this celebration? The town’s only factory is Hammons Nuts…they are a black walnut processor. As kids, we could earn money for bringing in gunney sacks full of black walnuts. There were different prices depending on whether you had removed the outer casing or if you had not. The easiest way to remove the outer casing was stepping on them. The tobacco colored “juice” would ruin your shoes, so we always used old shoes. If you look at the back of the package of black walnuts in the store, many times you would see they were processed at Hammons in Stockton, Missouri. I’m not sure about packages in Ontario. It would be interesting to know if they were! ☺️

@@renanims6630 Yeah, I don't know, when you cut it, it turns black in like 20 seconds. That's massive oxidation right there. When you eat apple, you eat it in 2 minutes, but if you leave it outside, it will turn dark (not like black walnut of course), and you probably will not eat it. Well, with black walnuts, it turns black in like 20 seconds. That can't be good. I tried it already, it is not some special juice, like iodine, no, it is oxidized thing. Whatever is oxidized, can't be good for us. Juglone is poisonous, and I think that's what it is (that black thing).

@@nebojsa1976 the inside nut does not turn black when cut. Maybe you are thinking of some other nut? 🤷🏼‍♀️

@nebojsa1976 2 года назад
@@renanims6630 Actually I tried it last night. Maybe 20-30% turns dark. Of course in the center it is hollow with interesting shapes. Just watched another video where guy was preparing tincture and he is explaining how that darkening or coloring juice is iodine. And I'm like, hmm, are you sure. I just proved last night that is oxidation (I rubbed some lemon juice on one piece and it didn't turn dark very fast but after maybe half an hour, but the other part turned black in seconds), but not regular oxidation like in apple, but massive oxidation, that turns it to dark in like 20 seconds. That can't be good.

It's amazing how plants can provide so many ways to enjoy them, and how creative people were in figuring it all out over the ages. Looking forward to how the taste of your nocino compares to the nuts! Black walnuts are my favorite of the wild nuts. Nothing like them.

Those look like English walnuts. Black are very round like little tennis balls and are very easy (soft-hulls) to cut into.

Hi, question have you ever gotten a rash or hives because I just used gloves and realized the black walnut green hulls touch my side arm and felt itchy and had one hive bump, any recommendations or experiences or what to expect! Is it normal ? Also seen worms inside of it while there still green on some of them and is it safe ?

Hi! I need your help. I did my black walnuts tincture about two weeks ago the same that you showed in the video. Second day I open the lid I saw vodka on the top got black, then I closed the lead and up until now I shake the jars once or twice a day, but my tinctures didn't change the color, walnuts are still green. Do you know what happened? What should I do? Thank you in advance!

You're lucky to have a nice small tree to harvest from! My neighbor's yard has a huge black walnut tree but the closest branches are 10' off the ground, I can't see how I'd get to them with anything short of a roofing ladder.

Use gloves, or step on the skin to “shuck” them off….best done in the yard with OLD shoes, as they stain!

I do not live in a black walnut area, but trappers that do sometimes use black walnuts to dye their traps. Boiling rusted steel, with walnuts, dyes the traps a deep black. I believe they use the hulls as their source of dye. The OCD in me loves the new shelf as opposed to the old cupboard! Thanks for the video.

I once mailed dried black walnut husks to a trapper up north. It's amazing how dark the dye is from the jugalone in the walnut husk. Yes, the new cabinet is awesome!
