the keyboard sucks to lol well the physical one. The keys are so small and close together you are better off just using it as a touch pad or mouse and thats it. the on screen keyboard isn't that bad tho.

I personally would suggest you not to buy this phone, it looks great in beginning, but after few months you will feel the awkward, I have this phone from last 7 months, it has mechanical issues, like it's slide feels kind of loosen, when you use the touch, you will feel like that display is shivering and it has many other problems as well!!

I have used PRIV for a month now, and I still love it. The option to type in virtual and physical keyboard is unmatched. Screen is actually very good, built quality excellent. Design is better than Moto X and other phones you mentioned in my opinion. The only thing that is a downer is the price. This would be a super hot sale if it was priced $499.
@MatthewMoniz
@MatthewMoniz 8 лет назад
+David Lawman I agree if this phone was $400-$500 it would be a good deal. But I feel for the price there are much better options. Thanks David!

For those of you on the fence about the Priv, looks like BlackBerry is releasing a software update that will fix some of the issues such is camera app slowness, bugs in the OS, a security update and more. The camera should perform better.

Nexus is paying this dude to bash it with small minor stuff. The camera loaded up fine. And u can't bash they keyboard cuz that's all preference. It's there if u want. And if u don't want it. Don't use it. But as long as all the communicating feature is still there from the blackberry side. That's a good enough reason to get it

Dude before you accuse anyone of criticizing your Priv because he gets paid at least get your facts right. Priv is using Android system made by Google, and nexus is introduced by Google too. So why would Google pay this poor guy with less than 30k subscribers to bash Priv which might jeopardize its reputation indirectly? I wouldn't disagree with you although it too sounds stupid af if you were referring to Samsung, Apple, Lenovo or other rivals in the market as the one behind all these untenable conspiracies.

Hold the Press! Copperhead, a security company which developed and supplies it's own secure version of Android says that a rival's version isn't any good?? Well there's an unbiased opinion for you... Certainly I wouldn't be tarnishing your own reviews without doing your own research, relying on compromised, 3rd party opinion.
@jomgaard3035
@jomgaard3035 8 лет назад
+Jom Gaard Just to further that point, Blackberry says in it's list of improvements "Improvements to the Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) security technique that are not in Android L or M and make it far more difficult for malware - even something like Stagefright - to exploit Android software bugs." Then Copperhead in their PR release/article say: "TH: Would BlackBerry Priv’s security enhancements have prevented the Stagefright exploits? DM: No. They don't appear to have done any work relevant to those." ... and then go on to tell the world how Copperhead's Android 5.1.1 version is best because it improves the very same ASLR security... ! hahaha.. And yet their product is only at the alpha stage anyway, not fully released.
@belmarfilms
@belmarfilms 8 лет назад
To claim that a critique of a product is compromised just because of a potential conflict of interest is a logical fallacy. Not only that, but Blackberry has backdoored their products and services in the past, and does not support the amount of security features that Copperhead OS does. It doesn't run a full PaX kernel, it doesn't isolate unlock PINs from the encryption passphrase, it doesn't give users granular control over the sharing of their personal information, and even comes bundled with proprietary apps and services that collect and leak consumer data by default. Copperhead OS, on the other hand, is completely open source. It also has more security features, better sandboxing, stronger encryption, more granular information sharing and app permission controls, and network hardening/anonymization built in by default. Blackberry can't even remotely compete with that, considering the fact that they have gone so far as to backdoor their own products and services in the past, and have cooperated with numerous governments and private organizations with human rights abuses. Give me a break, fanboy.

It's a step in the right direction for BalckBerry IMO. I hope to see the Priv 2 implement feedback on lacking items - I think it'll be a winner. I can't help but want this phone. Great video Matt!
@MatthewMoniz
@MatthewMoniz 8 лет назад
+Tomas Villegas I agree it is better than releasing another BB10 device and it will keep current BB users attached to BlackBerry and pull in a few more. It just feels and acts as a $400 product. I too hope the Priv 2 (if there is one) impresses us. Thanks Tomas for taking the time to watch! Much appreciated.

+Angel Of Death Uchiha I'm moving towards getting the BBP SE in a couple of months, got a Lumia 830 to replace my Z30 and I've been quite disappointed. I played with the Priv in a Telus store here in (Toronto), my GOSH, the reps at these stores know so much about Android they know nothing about BlackBerry; they've tried to sell me this stupid Priv saying it's all Blackberry with a FULL-Speaker at the bottom..HA! what lies. I turned around and told a customer wanting to buy one, this guy is full of shit, let me show you that the speaker is actually smaller than he claims. That pissed off the store employees full-well. Is the BBP SE comfortable like how the Z10 felt "just-right"?

I've been on a priv for a few months now. Camera lag and bug issues were fixed - first software update was about 500mb! And they are planning to release android 6 in about a month. At first I thought I was typing terribly on the physical keyboard, until I realized I was accidentally using swipes. The touch feature on the key board is loaded with functions when typing as well. Battery life is easily double what my s6 and s6 edge were, and it doesn't get nearly as hot under heavy use. If I use it what I consider heavily all day and forget to charge it, it still has enough to get me well into the following morning. I am very convinced that the priv was made by Samsung. Similar hardware layout, curved glass edges, similar build quality and It's the only phone that utilizes samsung 9v adaptive fast charge. Cool video man! I didn't know about the 100-1 version having wireless charging! I do miss the fingerprint reader though, hoping it will be on the next release! :)

So, I've been studying BlackBerry for a very long time. I've got the Passport for my woman made it Android compatible, and just recently got the Priv because of its price today as the company shamefully distance itself from handset production chain. The experience thus far has been nothing short but amazing, they are exceptional phones, and the BlackBerry Priv doesn't disappoint me at all. Ordered directly from BlackBerry, unlocked with Android 6.0.1 - Version - STV100-1, this smart phone is the best money can buy today. I mean one must really look at the specs and use it for other purposes than producing reviews. If I could use this analogy, BlackBerry is like the Ferrari discontinuing the production of one of their best cars and putting them for sale at never seen before prices. I don't want to go on and on, although I really could, but to only mention one key feature I love about this phone, for instance its capacity to support a 2TB Micro SD. Truly the phone of the future, a real shame the company stop the production of this device.

That was a great review! I have the Priv now and been using it since May. You were right, the price is amazingly high. I paid $400 on the spot while the rest is going to my two year contract but my plan is a very good one. I love the physical keyboard, I always wanted someone to create a phone that had both the digital and physical keyboard. even though the buttons do feel different, I type pretty fast and make less typos than the digital keyboard. So far for me, this is the best phone I owned! :)

i think if you're gonna make a review dont tell what do you hear from others reviewers my personal opinion is that 1--- the priv is a phablet 5.4 inch that can support 200gb micro sd they claim it can go up to 2tb 2-- it has better camera than the iphone 6 and 6+ 3-- much better resolution 4-- with it curve lcd compete directly with the galaxy s6 edge 5-- they decide to include a amazing Capacitive touch 4-row BlackBerry keyboard 6-- android device with blackberry known security background 7--- able to play any new game or app available 8-- it has 3gb of ram much more than the 2gb of the iphone 6 and i can keep for hours 9- the curve lcd is funtional and shows battery life gauge regarless galaxy edge that it's just for stetics final words is not more of the same chocolate bar it goes further and includes a keyboard and a curve lcd its like a mix between s6 edge and a BB-torch with 18mp camera

But no criticisms about the phone? Like the lag through out the whole os and not releasing it with the most current versions. If HTC can do it then so can they.
@jomgaard3035
@jomgaard3035 8 лет назад
+Adam Pagan There is no more lag apparently - fixed with the first update. There are a fair few, deep security additions to Android 5.1.1 on this phone. Other companies providing secure versions of Android are also still on 5.1.1 . Yet Blackberry Android 6.0 is to be released very soon..
@Slifer-yq8ep
@Slifer-yq8ep 8 лет назад
+Jom Gaard that's what I heard to. But as for me apparently I just can't do the the skinned version of Android. it's too blaoted although the SD card does help.
@DamiArmyCanada
@DamiArmyCanada 8 лет назад
+Adam Pagan This is their first Android phone so they had to use OS version 5.1.1 at the time when it was available as smart phone takes time to develop; It does not magically come together over-night. You can't just jump into Marshmallow OS. Marshmallow was only available in October 2015. The Priv was launched in beginning of November 2015. You can't just come up with a brand new smart phone in a month. Besides, Blackberry said they will update to Marshmallow OS in early 2016.

Anyone can give a feedback about long term use of the Blackberry Priv? Did the camera operation got faster with software updates? Is it possible to upgrade a non-wireless charging Blackberry Priv to wireless charging? I'd love to have a keyboard on my phone, when I had, I was more productive. However, for the price, a couple of things are missing for me, wireless charging (in Europe), top of the class CPU (this one seems to be throttled down due to performance), no dual-sim option. And when the Samsung S7 costs similar, it's really hard to justify these compromises for the same price, in exchange of the physical keyboard.

Just bought the PRIV here a few days ago... So far the phone is a dream... I have always sworn by BlackBerry products.. mostly due to them being a Canadian made product.. I still remember getting my first BB.. which was of all things the Pearl Flip... That is where my love affair with BlackBerry started and so far they have yet to let me down. The one thing that does concern me is the fact that the PRIV does tend to heat up excessively with extended use... (especially when playing games).. That being said that is so far the only minor flaw that I have found with this device... To Matthew Moniz... Thanks for the review.. basically you put in to words exactly how I feel about the PRIV... While I am sure that it has it's faults... over all the device itself gets a firm 4.5 out of 5 stars from me. I would have given it a perfect score had it not been for the overheating issue...

You cant leave information out because the cards dont exist . some people keep phones for more then just a year or two ,information like that is valuable . it dosnt take much to say it supports up to 2TB but only 200 GB cards are available at the moment. I havent heard of any other phone that supports storage that high so that would be another highlight for the Priv you decided to leave out . also clean your phone before you review dude ...... other then that decent video. @jerryg50
@jerryg50 8 лет назад
Hi. The PRIV can run more selection of software. BB Android has the proper level of security. The PRIV is a more advanced phone. If you want a better keyboard the Passport would be better. The Passport for doing a lot of email is a bit better. The PRIV is better for watching videos and doing media stuff because of the aspect ratio. I use both phones and a Samsung 8 inch tablet. As for speaker sound the Passport is a bit better. As for phone sound quality they are both equal. Both devices are super deluxe phones. It's the matter of preference.

I love the Priv. It is so convenient. This is my first Blackberry and the Hub is great as well as the slide out. i wish the keys were a bit bigger but that is minor. I hope Blackberry puts out more phones like this. With the Marshmellow update, the phone does not get hot and the battery life is so much greater. My battery life is over 36 hours. I think as a society we are quite spoiled.

Do you think you could give me your thoughts on a video I did about the Priv? I'd really like to hear more about your experience and thoughts on the phone as a whole but especially about how much/why you appreciate a physical keyboard. The video is called "Blackberry Priv. An Unusual Phone in Modern Times" And sure, we're spoiled but it's frustrating to see a phone finally have something some of us have wanted for ever, only to have it disappoint in other areas that are crucial for us. The technology is all there so it's frustrating to see a phone not meet some of the expectations we might have vs other flagships. I really want to see physical keyboards make a comeback.

+Matthew Moniz blackberry has another mobile device in the planning. Right now they are testing the exynos processor. The same processor you can find in the s6 and the s6 edge. With over more than 3 billion in cash blackberry has enough power to bring another device. Exynos processor, 5mp front camera and a 15mp rear camera. That's the latest news about the new blackberry device.

My Blackberry Q10 has ALL the bands.. LTE/CDMA, as well as UMTS/GSM. One day i finally broke my really q10 by dropping it a few too many times and the screen landed flat on a pebble. I have dropped blackberrys in cases from as high as 15 feet at work and they have never broken before. But, the replacement that the Asurion folks sent me was defective. It didn't receive the signal as strong as the one I sadly broke. Then, when I took the phone into sprint to be replaced, it was a strange conversation. The sprint tower had gone down and nobody in the store was getting 4g. But, the phone I was complaining about was the only phone getting 4g in the store! The next replacement works as well as the one I dropped and now I am happy again. Oops... I forgot the question... Does your Priv have all the same bands that my Q10 does?

Priv's every chip is encrypted, i don't see it in any of the other android smartphone. plus it's a major turn around for them to be on Android so as the world is more educated in tech by the day every one know there will be some issues that will be fixed along the time. its good to identify all issues on lollipop before moving over to Marshmallow, i heard people complaining about slow camera shooter: it will be fixed through software update. Bottom line is I strongly recommend BB Priv.

It's smooth and makes a nice sliding and clicking sound so everyone ask you what is your phone. Typing is nice but lacks a bit of hardness on the keys if you are from a Classic or Q10 but after 2 days it becomes a second nature and typing this comment felt like a breeze.

Thanks for the pros and cons list. I'm still going for this Priv though. The hub is just to helpful. I'll deal with the bugs until they figure it out, and the fact that the camera is much better than my current BB is a plus. Security, form factor (QWERTY slide), hub, and Android in one package works for me. I liked having the Passport and being able to install Android apps on it, but it will be better once I can use real Android runtime for location based apps.

Looks like Blackberry failed again. I actually havent heard too many bad things about the phone, so I was surprised you say it's a disappointment. I trust your reviews more than anyones out there. I appreciate the video. I nearly threw my Blackberry against the wall a few days ago when I was in Vegas. I was eating at one of Gordon Ramseys restaruants and I pulled my phone out to take a picture of my dish (#FoodPorn). My phone froze as I tried opening the camera and it rebooted. When a BB10 phone reboots it takes a long time to boot up. Speaking of booting up phones, How long does it take the Priv to boot up from Off?

It's a bit dopey to say that the security is inferior because it isn't running the most recent version of Android. While unfortunate Marshmallow isn't supported yet, it's supposed to be upgraded sometime soon. In other words, that's not a comment on the device itself.

I was hoping to like this one (I really want to see BlackBerry as a brand survive), but there's just things about it that fall short. From the display not being at the same level as other flagships, to the camera that seems like a generation behind (2MP in the front, really?), build quality issues, awkward to use the physical keyboard (I could imagine Matt dropping the phone if he doesn't hold it securely enough while typing), and of course the price....way, way overpriced. Good review as always, Matt!

its a great phone and don't forget to update the priv s first big update. this update might shut a lot of bad reviewers mouth. priv is not comparable to any other touch screen android phones. you want something different well priv is the only one to buy. blackberry will keep the same design just like how bmw is keeping their front design for many years. its a sick phone and i do believe the updates within time will fix most flaws. i have the priv for 3 weeks... and wow its a keeper. its not overpriced .its the idea to put everything together with keyboard that makes it special and pricy. nexus 6p bendgate fail. you're buying the idea and quality strong phone yes it is solid. and security i disagree its bad ass. and priv will be upgradable for marshmallow so just chill. blackberry was never cheap ... they were because of bb10. now they put android ecosystem ..no reason to low the price this will match up the rest of the high end phones.

I did play with one in a shop and agree that the Priv does not feel as premium feeling as it looks on video or in print. I have the Priv and love it! Yes it's a hand warmer of sorts but the replacement is much better and so yeah the rushed it to market. As for lag it's minimal, the camera is great too. Battery life at times is great sometimes not so good. The keyboard is only there IMO just to change things up a little bit from time to time. As far as security I'm sure that once I receive the next flavor update the security will then be ahead of the others. The call quality is not so good when using Bluetooth some times. However the keyboard has a lot of hidden short cuts within the use of the keyboard and I'm still trying to figure it out as well. The keyboard should have been made to pull out the left side instead of the bottom to provide more real estate for the keys. I modified some apps to save juice and so I probably get better battery life than most. it's really worth more like $500.00-$550.00 only because the keyboard slides from the bottom. It really needs it's own private browser and dump this Chrome browser. I still bought it because it's a BlackBerry and will continue to do so if they keep improving it. I have the iPhone 6 and the only reason why I use that as my other line is because it encripts all data from and to my phone and has great battery life. On a serious note Apple should install a real call blocker and stop playing games! Other manufacturers allow real call blockers including BlackBerry! It's a super start for BlackBerry as they climb back out the hole and I love em for the underdog they are! Go BlackBerry!

@Matt, I think everyone would be interested to hear your review now that BlackBerry has made its updates. In fairness, you have a brand new player in the Android space and its their first attempt on the new platform. I would have preferred the initial review to come out once the first patch was applied as that gives most people the best idea of how things are. My understanding is the changes are enormous and address almost every one of the negatives you point out. The camera also seemed to get one of the highest scores from DxO labs who are authorities on all things camera. This is a stark contrast to your review... which is odd. Any insight? Your review is well laid out but just seems to contrast so many others that have demonstrated strength or excellence in areas you've labelled as weak. Strikes me as odd but possibly a timing thing.
@MatthewMoniz
@MatthewMoniz 8 лет назад
After i released the review literally in a week a huge software update happened. I'm definitely going to revisit it. I'm just going to wait until it receives Android Marshmallow. Dx0 is great but it doesn't give you a realistic idea of how good the camera is. It's more based on tests and numbers. Thanks for watching and the comment! I will revisit the bb10 again.
@Jace7077
@Jace7077 8 лет назад
+Matthew Moniz Cool. Got my hands on one for a bout 5 min and the pictures are better than galaxy S6 edge. The edge over sharpens with its post processing and color representation is horrible. DxO labs are pretty good. We're big camera people. The upside to the Edge vs the Priv camera, camera only here, is that the auto focus is lightning fast on the Edge and you can take rapid photos. The Priv has more accurate lighting, better color representation and no ultra aggressive post image processing. Would be cool to hear the review when they get Marshmallow. Worth mentioning whether the BB stuff is useful. I don't think DTEK is as big a deal for me but Blackberry hub is huge. I prefer using trusted email apps and its hard to find one with support for anything other than gmail and cookie cutter email addresses. Plus i dont like them pulling in my emails. thanks for replying btw! :)

@MatthewMoniz
@MatthewMoniz 8 лет назад
+k_ev1n Actually, if you have noticed I respond to all the comments. First thanks for watching! Second, I understand you have a BlackBerry Priv, so you're obviously very passionate about your device and I respect that. With that being said, there's a lot of software quirks with the phone. I've had it crash on me a few times, it's just not nearly as fluid as most of the other higher-end android phones released this year. I find it has a lot of micro-lag. The camera app is very slow! Slow to focus, slow to load and slow to process and that's apparent in the video. The camera itself is very average. The build quality is cheap. The back is mushy. The screen is an average amoled panel from last year and a 2MP front-facing camera? I'm sorry this is not a high-end device. Asking $700 or $900CA for a device that feels unfinished is a lot to ask. Sure, it may get software updates to improve the experience, but there are too many bugs right of the gate to be acceptable. I can think of tons of other phones that perform and function better. I don't expect everyone to agree with me, nor would i want them too, but this is how I feel. I've tested every high-end phone this year and this one left me feeling disappointed. Thanks again for watching!
@kgid
@kgid 8 лет назад
+Matthew Moniz The issue is you keep saying there are a lot of bugs.. what bugs???? what bugs does it as an android 5.1.1 lollipop phone have that say the LG G4 does not have or maybe they old Nexus 6 does not have? When it gets marshmallow are you still gonna keep saying it's not secure anymore? is there and lollipop phone as secure as the BlackBerry? You have failed to mention any bugs but keep throwing out it has bugs like it's a BlackBerry issue and not an android issue. the camera might not be as fast as you want but it does not mean it's slow to an extent that it's a deal breaker for most. it does take very good pictures. the front facing cam is not great though. I'm here comparing it with an iPhone 5 and it slower but the pictures are on par which is what matters. you dwell on negatives so much and ignore the positives. For the record.. mine has never crashed so I can't agree with you on that.
