In this video I'm showing you the Blackmagic Camera app on the iPad Pro M2 and how to connect an external SSD for ProRes video recording. I'm also showing how to connect an external microphone to use with the iPad Pro for recording dialogue for the Blackmagic Camera app recordings and I also show how to get a clean HDMI video output from the iPad Pro. This is all done at the same time.
As the iPad Pro M2 is Thunderbolt compatible, I'm using a Thunderbolt hub by ACASIS, the DS-9001. This Thunderbolt hub is also compatible with USB peripherals via USB C. The Thunderbolt hub then allows the connection of the external SSD for recording video directly to. And the Thunderbolt hub also allows for the connection of a USB audio interface which then allows for the connection of external microphones.
For the external Thunderbolt SSD I'm using the ACASIS TBU405Pro M1 with a WD SN850X 4TB M.2 SSD inside of it. This particular combination for the external Thunderbolt SSD is as fast as you can get for any Thunderbolt SSD.
The USB audio interface that I'm using is the Behringer U-Phoria UMC202HD. This is a Class Compliant interface and allows the connection of any XLR condenser microphone, or any XLR dynamic microphone or a dynamic microphone on 1/4" jack. This setup will also allow for the connection and the recording of two separate microphones simultaneously into the Blackmagic Camera app.
In the screen shots for the Blackmagic Camera app interface, you may have noticed that the video codec said H.265. This wasn't the case with actual test clips, the codec was set to ProRes 422 HQ.
I also forgot to mention that the USB C to HDMI cable is one by Cable Creation.

Great video Dave. I'm going to have to bookmark this for future reference as there's a lot to digest here. Thanks for putting that together. The app looks great. It's quite amazing that they all of this functionality is now available on tablets and smartphones.

Alright, Kevin. Yes, there’s a lot to digest and the video is long. I’m not sure if it’s too long but I thought I’d give all the extra info as people coming fresh into these things may not be aware of some of the technical stuff. As you know, you can’t win with these things. It’s either too short with not enough info or it’s too long with too much info. This is the problem with tech stuff, to do it properly there usually is a fair bit of stuff that has to be explained as it usually effects other stuff. Yes, the app looks great and for something that’s a bit more complicated compared to typical camera apps, it’s amazingly intuitive. For the first time in a long time I’m actually getting really excited and can’t wait for that Pro Max. It looks like it may be great for camera stuff and gaming. My two favourite things 😂 Cheers, Dave.

@@DavidHarry Apologies Dave. Just to clarify, I wasn't suggesting the video was too long, but just that you had a detailed setup and explanation. I assumed it would be a standard smartphone type app with a few options so I wasn't expecting so many things to consider. It's amazing that you can hook the app up to so much pro equipment :)

Alright, Kevin. Before I say anything else in a comment that gets me into trouble 🤣 Here's a video that better explains my response ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QDRZ_rFYeaY.html

Glad to see that it works with an Ipad, but it is probably a whole lot easier, cheaper, and easier, just to get a Pocket 4K camera.
@DavidHarry
@DavidHarry 5 месяцев назад
Yes it would be easier with a Pocket 4K and it would be miles better than the iPad camera. However, this setup is obviously for someone who already has an iPad and who has no interest in buying a dedicated video camera. Cheers, Dave.

that's a pretty good app and setup! well, with that setup it would be hard to be mobile but for run and gun i guess you record directly to your phone/cloud? cheers!

Heyy nice, i was looking at something like this for the Iphone 15 pro My idea was to either a) Have a splitter cable so I can use both a usb-C camera mic and an external drive Or b) to use a small usb-c to 3 usb-c hub where I can use the camera, have some form of charging, and then connect to my laptop with a capture card I feel like there should be USB-c capture careds by now, but apparently not... But in any case, those two would be my main goals with the new iphone, as its as mininalist as possible.

Hi, Felix. The only problem I can see with the iPhone 15 and a small, passive USB C hub/splitter, is that without the extra power the iPhone may have problems powering an SSD and a USB audio source at the same time. Both the SSD and the USB audio will need powering from the iPhone’s USB socket and I’m not sure if it will have enough power for both. It would be possible to use a setup that also used a USB battery bank for the extra power, if needed for the USB hub/splitter. However, such a setup would make the iPhone setup quite bulky and it may not be very practical for outdoor, mobile use. Using an indoor setup like what I’ve used in this video, should be possible for the 15 Pro and Pro Max. I say “should be possible” as there still may be a chance that Apple may limit the use of the USB C ports on the Pro and Pro Max. As for your idea of using a USB C to HDMI capture device to connect the iPhone 15 to a computer to capture the video output. That box that I use in the video tests is a USB C to HDMI capture box and it works with Windows and MacOS. The only problem with these USB C to HDMI capture boxes is that they are maximum 4K 30FPS, as they are of the UVC standard. Plus their recording bit rate and recording codec is lower than what the iPhone can do internally with the ProRes codec. Again, due to the limitations of the UVC standard. I will be testing many combinations with the iPhone 15 Pro Max and hopefully I will be able to come up with some solutions. Cheers, Dave.

Have tried to use the Blackmagic Cam app on my iPad Pro, but I am getting very inconsistent results. I’m recording to a crucial SSD but every time at least very often if I try to record at any format other than HEVC or 264 I get dropped frames. The drum frame seems to happen very inconsistently sometimes I can record for an hour of the times. I start dropping frames after 20 seconds. It just seems to be unusable because of the inconsistent recording. I’m recording externally to a crucial SSD drive, which is completely empty and has a very good cable hooked up to a Belkin 4 port USB-C hub.

In this setup can you introduce the apple tv that streams to external monitor?

You could probably stream the UI of the app but you can't stream the clean feed. Cheers, Dave.

Yes and it does not need an adapter you can just record the file direct to a USB C drive. Cheers, Dave.

Blackmagic camera app is not taking up full screen on iPad Pro.

On the bottom right corner of the iPad screen, there is a expansion button. Click it - and the app will fill much more of your iPad screen. …Rowby.
