Blacksmithing - Forging A Railroad Spike Throwing Knife

I have been asked to do this and actually I want to take a few of these to my show in Fredonia, Ny this weekend... using even a mild railroad spike still shows hardening capabilities and as I found out in the course of making this video it holds up perfectly for a recreational throwing knife

Great, fun video Chandler. As a teenager, I took one of my father's hunting knives and snapped about an inch or so off of the tip throwing the knife at a tree. Probably twenty years later I was bragging to the old man about the Lansky sharpening kit I had purchased and how great it was. His response was "Huh, if its that great I've got a project for you, but you HAVE to send it back when you're done." He made me promise. It was the same knife that I had broken many years before. I had forgotten about the knife, but the old man had not. It took a while, but I was able to reshape the tip and I found a good sheath that was a perfect fit at a flea market.I sent it back to him as promised.He kept that knife on the kitchen table where he could look at it every day, pulling it out and just 'handling' it, looking at it. The knife was the last promise I ever made to my father. I have the knife now, but I keep it in a safe, but once a week I pull it out just to look at it and handle it

i like the care you put into finishing on the anvil. for those that have never herd this - "10 min at the forge sure beats 2 hours at the grinder" - old blacksmith saying

Genuine thanks for messing your quench up the first time and fixing it on camera. That's the type of thing us aspiring smiths can learn from. Also, 26:00 beginning of a private eye movie.

Possibly the most I've laughed in a Chandler vid - I'm gonna give this a whirl next week - excellent job explaining forging of a double edge, something I've been asked to do a few times but haven't yet attempted. Keep up the good work!!!

Chandler, When I was taught to quench steel, I was to use a figure 8 motion. The instructor said if you didn't do it that way and just held it immobile in the oil. a pocket of gas around the blade, would insulate it from being touched by the oil. I've done it this way all my life, and it works for me......Bob

If where to make another a tip would be to pound the pommel smaller for no spin and smoother handle throws. With that hook shape it has it looks like it would not slide out of the hand to easy.

If it is handle heavy grip the blade to through it, if it is blade heavy grip it by the handle to through. It just helps with the rotation. Very nice looking knife.

Definitely going to start making some of these. honestly though from what I've thrown I like a little more heft in the blade but I think that's more personal preference, as long as you can make the balance consistent in a set I really don't think it matters.

Hey Chandler, been really binging on your videos the past few days and really enjoying them. You're as real as it gets and you tell it how it is.. If you want to make a burner, the king of random has a detailed video on that. If you are able to buy one, I found a nice one on eBay that gets super hot for 50, or if you want the regulator and hose as well, it's 85. I be saving up for it right now. XD

Awesome! Great video! Looks like a great blade thrower, I think it would be a bit hard to throw from the handle with that big pommel though. As for the balance goes, I think generally people try to balance throwing knives in the center for the most consistent circles in flight. If the weight is not balanced in the center, it might make it a tiny bit harder to stick consistently, but if you like the feel of it, I don't really think it matters too much. Thanks for sharing!

The head of the handle will be a bit to hooky and cause over spin, taper it down to a 11/4 ' 4 sided point so if you hit handle first it will stick in.

for quenching milder steels like spikes, you should try out superquench some people have gotten 1018 mild steel to 42HRC vs 18HRC in plain water with this stuff. it supposedly has great results for spikes, the recipe varies but its generally close to this 4 1/2 (or 5) gallons water 5 lb. salt 32 oz. Dawn dish soap (blue) 8 oz. Shaklee Basic I Stir before each use

Chandler when you throw your knife stop and look at the ground before you throw your body must be still and relaxed you're walking turning and throwing all at the same time slow down take your time and enjoy yourself
@jedexkid41
@jedexkid41 8 лет назад
I understand your trying to center the balance of the knife, but in my experiance, I prefer handle heavy, and in-line pomel that might get slightly thicker at the end. I also prefer thicker points, and i think unlike most people, about 1/4 inch blade of sharp, I find it helps with sticking when starting out. purely subjective opinion, the knife you made would be pretty nice for blade throws. I salute your inquisitive nature, and envy your skill.

based on the way it was bouncing off the target and there being no deformation, I would say that is pretty much perfect steel/hardness/temper for that purpose.

The balance is important in a throwing knife to the thrower some like it blade heavy some like it handle heavy I like them blade heavy all my handles have holes drilled in the end and that gives me what I want but any balance is throwable it just takes practice

Being that you don't put edges on the "blade" portion, does it need to be there at all? Seems a simple spike. or an arrowhead shape, would do just fine. Wouldn't take nearly as much time to work, either.
