I lived near Burkittsville, MD when the first “Blair Witch Project” came out. There were an influx of visitors who wanted to either “crack the case” or just wanted to re-create the experience. Even today, there are some tourists to the area of Frederick County.

Burkittsville is a real town. It’s historic actually. I remember when the first one came out. We Marylanders were just happy that the nation was talking about us and we absolutely fell for the marketing. I was younger at the time so hopefully that absolves me 🤣

The RU-vidr "goodbadflicks" actually did a great video on this movie's background. It was actually shot with the intention to open up as satire that turned into a social commentary on video deception and shared delusion. All the over the top violence sequences were re shoots. The studio didn't think people would be smart enough to get it because it was meant to be psychological and ambiguous. All the characters play off of a stereo type, the intellectual, the wiccan who believes in it, the outsider, etc. It surprisingly was clever but was chopped up, re shot and made to look ridiculous. The opening had Frank Sinatra's song about Witchcraft to set up the atmosphere but they changed it to Marilyn Manson. Check out his video on this, it'll blow your mind how bad they fucked this movie up.

But the directors said that’s not true it would make sense but it wasn’t never part of the script. There’s a part in the movie where she like “wtf is that” and starts running because the directors had a random guy in a scary costume run up on them unknowing to scar the actors but the guy with the camera never caught the shot. So it was meant to be a actual horror but the editing made it look like it was a planned killing

Here's a fun fact: The "Book of Shadows" is an actual book that includes religious text and instructions for rituals towards the Wiccan religion and various pagan practices. It's possible that Erica may own a copy, as she is a Wiccan.

Check out the GoodBadFlicks episode on this one... apparently the studio crapped all over what the filmmaker wanted to do... chopped it up and reedited it. Whether or not the original version would be better or not, we'll never know.

Fun fact: the guy under the vending machine is Rustin Parr, the Witch(?)’s thrall introduced in the first one who kidnapped and killed all those kids in her name. I highly recommend GoodBadFlick’s breakdown of the movie, the studios really fudged with this one.

This is one I really want to see... not the film that is mass distributed to everyone but the director's cut that we were supposed to get. Granted it wouldn't fix the bad dialogue or acting that already existed in the film but at least we'd get to see the movie the director ACTUALLY wanted to tell, instead of the BS cut Artisan slapped together. Also, last time I checked, Montgomery County MD isn't the deep south but the way it's shown in this film you'd be confused.

It's the most populous of Maryland's counties, adjacent to Washington DC, has some rather sizable cities, and is one of the most affluent counties in the US with the highest percentage of residents over 25 who have postgrad degrees. So yeah, not a hick yokel backwater. (And yes, those facts are from Wikipedia, but I've been to Montgomery County...)

@@easolinas1233 As someone originally from Montgomery County, I can confirm ALL of that. Though I should make an edit, Burkittsville is actually in Frederick County, only 1 county north. And even so, FC does have more hills and woods but again, nowhere near Hicksville. Truthfully most counties in mid-Maryland outside of Baltimore all look the same

There's a video from GoodBadFlicks that explains a lot of the choices in this film (The mental hospital flashbacks, the random cutting to murders, the Twin Peaks girl etc). Essentially, the theatrical version of BW2 isn't the director's true vision. He wanted it to be a psychological horror, examining how media affects those who are obsessed with it. I've seen a fan edit of the DC, while it's not a good film, it's a more comprehensive bad film than the theatrical version. You need to review the 2016 sequel. It makes this one look like an Oscar winner. At least this one tried to do something different. 2016 just rehashed the original 1999 film only with frequent jump scares, characters that you want to see die because they make one dumb move after another.

Blair Witch is one of my favorite movies to this day. I thought their acting was fucking great. Three shit-talking cigarette-obsessed teenagers lost in the woods? They turned on each other quick, as they would in real life, and I thought their mental deterioration was believable as well. I don't understand why people think it's bad.

I haven't seen this since I was a kid, but I randomly remember a Kim Director in this who said that witches "Eat, shit and die like the rest of you. We just look good doing it." I'm not really sure what all that means or why I remember it, but it sticks out in my mind

I knew several people thought that it was actual found footage and had been given permission to show it by the family. I am not sure if I would have thought the same thing if I hadn't read the Rolling Stone article. The movie was messed up by production. They wanted a darkly comic feel with lots of hints and codes throughout the film that would give hints to the plot and what was going to happen. But it was weirdly edited and chopped together in a lot of ways out of order. Making no sense in the end. Doesn't mean it would have been good, but might have been better.

I've been watching this channel for so long now & it just lights up my day! I totally relate to these guys and their movie/TV commentary. They just have so much fun and they get me laughing every time! I'm so grateful for Double Toasted! You guys are life savers! Also, I did like Blair Witch 2 back in the day, maybe I was young, dumb and just Jones'n for some silly horror movies at the time. :p

You guys are spot on about the end of movie. I saw this when it first came out years ago and all I remember is the acting in the ending. It literally felt like actors got to the end of the production and decided to kick it up a notch! lol

This film was messed with by the studio. Music was changed, gore was added and edits made that changed it. There was a lot subtle refrences first film and mythology Blair Witch (the man on the floor in store was Rustin Parr who was executed for murdering children and said Witch made him do it and who's home Heather and Mike found in first film. The director's commentary is very entertaining and informative). The film is a mess and I don't think we'll ever see the original version. The Wiccan was in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake.

When the movie didn't make the big bucks like they wanted, they had to find another way to get people to buy or rent it. So they came up with ESREVER. Reverse spelled backwards. The secret of Esrever was what they called it on the dvd cover. They went and digitally added hidden words and pictures through out the home version. when some of the words were put together they would form a sentence. Ghost-like faces also popped up in some scenes. That stripper pole was the tree in the center of Rustin Parr's house. They were trying to show that time and space worked different out there. because in one scene the tree is huge and then it turns into a makeshift stripper pole in another. Speaking of Rustin Parr, he was the guy lying on the floor in the store that said "I'm finished now". This is a line from the first Blair witch movie. Parr walks into town after killing the children and turns himself in and says those words.
