The farmer needed a lot of good quality hard rock for some extensive erosion control and restoration works on his farm. Luckily for him there is a seam of hard sandstone running through his property that has been worked occasionally for this purpose for generations. The blast design brief was simple: 1/ Don't throw it everywhere across the paddock like the last guy. 2/ I don't want the trees damaged by fly rock. 3/ I need mostly big pieces, the small stuff is not needed. Hmmm. OK... This is what I will do, conservative loading rate, long depth of stemming, low V.O.D. explosive and the explosive will be loaded into lay flat tubing that is considerably smaller than the hole diameter, to decouple the shock component of the blast energy and reduce the shattering. Will this work??? Yes it worked perfectly.
